Quote: | After nearly a decade of rumors and speculation, Apple's finally unveiled the iPad. It's a half-inch thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds, with a 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen IPS LCD display, and it's running a custom 1GHz Apple "A4" chip developed by the P.A. Semi team, with a 10-hour battery life and a month of standby.
It'll come in 16, 32, and 64GB sizes, and it's got the expected connectivity: very little. There's a 30-pin Dock connector, a speaker, a microphone, Bluetooth, 802.11n WiFi and optional 3G, as well as an accelerometer and a compass. There's also a keyboard dock, which connects underneath in the portrait orientation, support for up to 1024x768 VGA out and 480p composite out through new dock adapter cables, and a camera attachment kit that lets you import photos from your camera over USB or directly through an SD reader.
The device is managed by iTunes, just like the iPhone -- you sync everything over to your Mac. As expected, it can run iPhone apps -- either pixel-for-pixel in a window, or pixel-doubled fullscreen -- but developers can also target the new screen size using the updated iPhone OS SDK, which is available today.
The 3G version runs on AT&T and comes with new data plans: 250MB for $14.99 and an unlimited plan for $29.99 a month contract-free. Activations are handled on the iPad, so you can activate and cancel whenever you want. Every iPad is unlocked and comes with a GSM "micro-SIM," so you can use it abroad, but there aren't any international deals in place right now -- Steve says they'll be back "this summer" with news on that front.
It starts at $499 for 16GB, 32GB for $599, and $699 64GB. Adding 3G costs a $130 per model, so the most expensive model (64GB / 3G) is $829. The WiFi-only model will ship in 60 days, and the 3G models will come in 90. |

Pfffft. I'll take an Acer One or Asus EEE 1201n instead of this overpriced piece of crap. It's nothing but a freaking iPod with a larger screen. Worse is that Apple are, being the egotistical cunts that they are, touting it as the ultimate portable HD playback device. Really? I ain't never seen no HD moves in 4:3/1024x768.
Lovely price too, especially when compared to VASTLY more powerful netbooks.

it could serve as a kindle replacement, but I think that the glossy screen would kill your eyes

thers a few things that suck about the ipad:
1) no muti tasking
2) no flash (surely this is essential for decent browsing!)
3) fucking expensive for what it is

Apple stock down 3%. With good reason, I daresay.

my question is how does it play HD content (I'm assuming H264 from itunes) on a 1 ghz cpu without any gpu? also, do apps from iphone store all scale from HVGA (480x320) to XGA (1024x768)?

This will fail for one reason.
No one will ever want to buy a device with such a limited closed hardware and software platform when, everyone else will be using far more powerful Windows 7 based hardware.
It's simple if you want to stream Flash Player 10.1/10.2 and have fast Internet browsing on Atom 1.6 CPU and dedicated GPU hardware or Google Android large device support, then don't bother buying something with such appalling obsolescence built in.
MSI, ACER and even Archos have cheaper and better hardware either already out or incoming which simply shit all over IPad.
Only sad brainless technophiles will buy this.

the difference is that it's a cellphone. looks nice, size is comfortable, it's easy to use and not everyone needs the stuff that highend smartphones nowadays offer. i'm no macfag (rather the contrary), but even considering its faults - it's the first thing ever apple got right imo.
the ipad will fail simply because it's an oversized smartphone (without the phone!) while other companies will build downsized PCs. if apple made some kind of smaller macbook air tablet instead, this would be a whole different story.

I bought an iphone half a year ago. Never would have figured myself as an owner. But almost all of the lackings of my previous phones are meet with it. It does have a ridiculous low battery life, but I can live with it.
The ipad, on the other hand, doesn't really strike me as a must-have. The only reason I would want one is to get an ebook reader, but it just has to many shortcomings in that area for me to buy one. The Kindle DX is for me much more attractive, but again as I don't live in the US and getting it shipped doesn't appeal to me. Also if it ever breaks, getting it repaired would be time consuming and costly.
Think I wait a generation or two and see what pops up.

wow, that was a pretty odd statement.
As you say it fits in the pocket, which IPad won't and also has the added benefit of being entirely pointless, in what will be a soon be an over saturated and much smarter market.

So what, I have to own something to hate it? Wow... What a stupid thing to say.
See? You have to hack your own device to be able to run the software you want. Oh, yeah, what's not to like?

Who said I have no experience with the iPhone? A lot of friends have it. I don't like it.
There are good apps for it, but this has nothing to do with iPhone, but rather the sheer number of them. My Diamond has better specs than the iPhone and a better resolution. It doesn't have all the games - but I don't care, I don't play much on the phone. For everything else, software is aplenty, and Opera Mobile wipes the floor with Safari (any version).
