I suggest you eg. Asus RT-N66U with Merlin's firmware (you can also install DD-WRT if you so desire). RT-N56U is also great but there is no Merlin's or DD-WRT firmwares for it.
Probably the best site for comparing different routers/network devides for home usage: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/76-total-simul

i use a ASUS PCE-AC68, coupled with a proper router (which does dual band for once), should be more then enough.
Sadly i don't have a dual band router (and i can't change it), so i'm stuck at 2.4ghz band lol.

@derpwald - no. nothing like that. But.. I have it set to dynamic IP as it is my contract with provider and my ip never changes. Even when i release and renew

I know. Just don't have free pci slot at all. Sound card is taking it already.
@scaramonga - well it seems weird to pay so much for a router and keep non original firmware on it. if I was to spend so much money on something I wouldnt want to temper with it. besides... Its just oo much for me.
The router I have was nearly 1/20th of my salary... but it's shit so figures

Why not just get 100ft ethernet cable? I used to had really shitty connection when my router was at the end of the house and my room is in front, which is separated by 4 rooms. Using wifi adapter was pain the ass.
I eventually bought couple 100ft ethernet cables(for pc, xbox360 and media player) and drilled some holes in the walls and just run them like that. No loss of speeds at all.

I have a Linksys E4200 and a TP-Link WDN4800. It gives me a stable 90Mbps over the 5Ghz band.

TP Link is fucking garbage and their support is worse than trying to deal with the Indian department tech support for your ISP.
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-3-In-1-Wireless-Router-RT-N12/dp/B00DWFPDNO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1401498539&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+rtn
I've got two of these and it's rock solid. One is operating as a wireless router, the other is running as an access point, because using those stupid USB bullshit devices for wireless is fucking stupid.
Pro of an access point: faster, no drivers (meaning use it on whatever the hell OS you want without spending hours looking for the right driver...and not worry about it causing issues), doesn't need windows to manage it, better reception, doesn't fucking overheat.
Cons: none because setup literally takes 2 minutes and you don't need to ever mess with it again.

personally i would not buy a router without 5ghz band.
then compare tplink hardspec with asus.
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wdr3600
https://wikidevi.com/wiki/ASUS_RT-N12_rev_D1
sorry, but that asus model is garbage from my pov. low proc speed, low memory, no 5ghz, no gb ports, no usb ports.
and you you want to replace firmware with ddwrt/opewrt, usually low budget tplinks work better vs other low budget routers.

spykez is right, TPlink is sub standard stuff, its the sort of low end shit you would find in the new maplin stores - for routers and wifi cards you are so much better off spending and going with a known good brand .

So d-link is shit but tp-link is FTW? okay
I'd also go with cable IF it's not muck of a hassle to just use an already existing cable housing built in your walls (power cables, or preferably the ones for the old antenna lines) AND the distance isn't too high.

D-Link used to be good, they haven't been making rock solid stuff for years.

ohhhh this fucking thing is driving me nuts...
The pc dongle is standing in the same place all the time... but the signal strenght changes all the time.
And the router is just crazy. Just checked. 8mbits... (on 100mb connection). Not touched dongle or anything, rebooted router from it;s settings and 30mbits. Still way to low but You can see that something is up. During the test I was the only connected person btw.
I prolly don't need new dongle if that new asus router with two antenas will have greater signal strenght
edit: I wont give up this easily. Testing bunch of other settings and getting 54mbps now... wonder for how long.
edit: another interesting observation.
Downloading Sleeping Dogs on steam. 6mb up to 20% then suddenly my internet speed caps at 1.1mb (that is megabyte as in 1100kbs) and that's it. I am monitoring my overal network connections and when I loaded Youtube to add to that, sleeping dogs went lower to 700kbps so YOutube could load..... So the fucking router decided to cap my internet at 10mbits(1mb) ?!
Rebooted the router and selected free channel (in that case 3) and bam ! - 6.5mb per second. That is what I should be getting all the time. downloaded another 30% of sleeping Dogs and it have not yet dropped. So...... tp link suck

well from my pov : dlink shit, tplink are better and more various hardware and specs wise/money. i dare you, find me a better 3g router at 25 euro vs http://www.tp-link.com/lk/products/details/?model=TL-MR3420 is at my country house since ~1 year ago, and even if power drops sometime 1 time/day and is fluctuating like hell, is still up and running flawless. and it have a great covarage to.
asus low budget are bad aswell. (specs/money)
linksys were good, no ideea how are now.
assus high budget are good, but i would prefered to buy mikrotik instead. i have a custom made mikrotik (we ordered 80 pieces, price was ~230 euro each) at home borrowed from work and is the best router i ever saw/use. hardware and software wise.

So yeah... I've downloaded that sleeping dogs yesterday evening at the right speed. 6.5 mb/s (it took like 10 minutes)
and today morning my speed is again capped at 1mb/s (that it 10mbits and I have 100 connection)
In the meantime I've been using my phone wifi. Maybe it have something to do with that. I've restarted router and its ok now
So it seems that after connecting multiple devices, The router somehow slows down and don't go back up even after all devices are disconnected.
I am set to 11bgn mixed because my dads notebook have only g antena but he did not used the laptop since yesterday
