Recently rediscovered my old sidewinder pro steering wheel, seems to be working fine on windows 7 =)
But the racing games I have dont really cut it for me. Have dirt 3, dirt showdown and grid installed atm, and they are great (breathtaking) racing games damage and graphics wise, but the career mode leaves alot to wish for.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any racing games that hit the trifect;
A decent (realisticish) damage model, a good career mode(Consisting of either managing a race team, or preferable how NFS Porsche 2000 did it, earning credits buying/selling cars and parts etc) and decent graphics(the graphics part is the least important, however the game would need to work with x64 windows 7)
Hope theres this magic awesome game im overlooking and you guys can point me to it
I'm not sure about which games fit the NFS Porsche bill, but the other two options are definitely covered by NFS Shift 2 Unleashed -- and I'm still pretty sure it has an expansive career mode too.
Sadly driving games with a good career mode are extremely rare on PC, like Sabin said the closest to your request is the Shift franchise, there's no doubt about that.
When it comes to racing sims to test your wheel you can try the good old GTR2/GTR-Evolution/rFactor+mods/Richard Burns Rally etc. , but keep in mind that none of them has a career mode.
Wheel testing I pretty much got covered with the codemasters game, they are really gun to play and quite extensive, just making it an even bigger shame they lack a decnt career mode.
Anything the career mode in shift is comperable with? Shift 2 better than shift 1?(Some cases sequel is worse hence the question hehe)
Great career modes just don't exist really, at least not combined with decent driving physics.
In terms of excitement, Shift 1+2 and pCARS are still the best ones. They give you the right sense of speed, good driving model, but none have a great career mode; pCARS for obvious reasons, the other two are just typical event X and Y modes. Shift is similar to PU in that regard though, you do have to buy cars and such, but if you know your cars you'll automatically pick the right car to win in Shift. I had barely done 35% or so of the career mode in Shift 2 and I already had my Murciélago
+1 to ixi's recommendations, I'd like to add LFS to the list just because it's fun to dick around in on the various tracks.
Burnout Paradise
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit (2011?)
My fav ones
ASUS X570 TUF GAMING PLUS, 32GB DDR4@2666 ,RYZEN 5800X3D (NO OC),GIGABYTE RTX 4070 Super GAMING OC, Western Digital Blue 4TB 5400RPM + SAMSUNG 860 EVO 500+1TB GB SSDs , OEM SATA DVD 22xNoctua NH-D15 Chromax Black, BenQ XL2420T Case: Be Quiet! DARK BASE PRO 901. PSU CORSAIR RM1200 SHIFT
If shift has the normal "win races, earn XP, get faster cars, beat more races" style of career its not what im looking for though=(
NFS porsche 2000 you could Pick events, swap out parts of your car, repair damage, sponsors hell even time progressed lol. Just seems so strange that with all these sports games that have uber extensive career modes(fifa, madden, football manager etc) there are no racing games that do the same... I know theres a few F1 games that have quite an extensive team management mode, but sadly f1 is the one race type I dont really care for lol

Neither has any damage model nor are they worth using a wheel on, since you don't need to steer to win.

That's actually pretty much what Shift does, so I suggest you give it a try. 1 and 2 are quite different though, just get both. You'll need to play with the settings to make it feel right for you though, don't give up straight away. The default setup is meant to cater the derp crowd who like Burnout, but even that setup is not derp enough for them, they still went "DIS IS 2 HARD"

You could always get a PS3 and GT5, or a 360 and Forza 4.... those match your criteria
Am I right in understanding shift 1 has a system using money and starting out with a loaner car etc. Whereas 2 uses xp(no more money/buying cars?) and is more(for lack of a better word) linear?
Seems like shift 1 would be more what Im looking for
Do both(or neither) of the games have buyable/swappable car parts?

Nono, Shift 2 uses cash as well. It's a mixed system, you unlock higher tiers with XP, but need cash for the actual cars. They're both relatively linear, but neither forces you to do EVERY event, there's absolutely no need to - especially if you actually get the maximum amount of experience out of each race by getting a good racing line, taking the corners properly and so on. There's also upgrades, different classes of races and quite a few other small good things - it's just a shame that the career mode itself is still just an event based tier system, it's the only point where SMS should really look at other games
So yeah, just get them. I skipped Shift 1 at first because it still had the "NFS" tag and I hadn't liked any NFS game in years. It's a good thing Leo got me to download it anyway, because I did and bought it after doing 3 races
TOCA Race Driver 3 was great fun on internet at least.
The single player mode is split into two areas: World Tour and Pro Career. The World Tour, which is basically the story mode, takes you around the world through just about every single championship the game has.
But don't think you had to fix what you broke.
Now if you want to go hardcore, Street Legal Racing: Redline. You have to manually fix every scratch you make and pay for it. Awesome to drive and tune, but I think it will fail on the career mode again.
I'd need to dust my 20years old steering wheel some day too, but unless Street Legal 3 comes out don't see it happening soon. Well there is hope with GRID 2 when that comes.
nfs porche was last good driving game with career mode.. rest are utter crap, considering how popular porche was its incredly strange how no one spits copys of it..
Wow lol you guys said nothing too much.. This game is a whole different experience than the codemasters game(with a steering wheel) It plays awesomely. Ill let you guys know my thoughts on the career mode, just finished the first real race, it was epic
Shift 2 with the mods from DarkRohirim's post is a great experience. Just remember you have to play it with the Elite controls (using Hard difficulty here as well) for getting the best out of it.
This seems alot more like what I wanted then the codemasters games, part upgrading seems pretty extensive, its no porche where you actually had a market and stuff but ill take it as they give it lol.
the wheel controls are pretty spot on so far, whereas with codemasters game it took alot of fiddling around to get the right feel. Ill definitely try those mods.
had a little question , might sound stupid lol.
been years since i used the wheel, and I dont drive. iirc you use right foot for both throttle and break is this correct? Using both feet feels really awkward
Tthe only racing games I have finished career were:
Nfs underground 1 and 2
Most Wanted
Burnout Paradise
Nfsu2 is my recommendation. It still looks fantastic
3080 | ps5 pro
Sin317-"im 31 years old and still surprised at how much shit comes out of my ass actually ..."
SteamDRM-"Call of Duty is the symbol of the true perfection in every aspect. Call of Duty games are like Mozart's/Beethoven's symphonies"
deadpoetic-"are you new to the cyberspace?"

Yep.
Btw, for games like Hot Pursuit, Split/Second etc. even this one is good
