If there was no way to pirate games (hypothetically), then game prices would go up.

Agree or disagree?

agree.

Thats pure economy. if its the only means You can get the thing, It can cost any price(reasonable lets say) and consumers will have to buy it.
offcourse games are luxury product so people would stop if, after certain price.
bu I guess that 100$ could still work

You should visit Poland. games, software, movies, electronics are INSANELY high here. We would only dream to have prices as low as states or uk. In relative meaning that is.

They're not high at all, actually relatively they are lower than in US/UK.

Hell, let's even compare something as simple a a bus ticket.

In UK ( source: http://www.ukstudentlife.com/Travel/Transport/London/Buses.htm )

it costs 1,35 pounds[7 zlotys] ( when using a special card,) or 2,30 [12,80 zlotys] pounds without it.

In US ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_transit_fares ) it's 2.25 dollars a ticket.

In Poland, it's 2,80 zlotys[0.54 pounds/0.84 dollars] for a ticket. ( http://mpk.lublin.pl/?id_site=1&id=383 )

Disagree. It has nothing to do with piracy.

To be honest, I think the prices would actually drop. I know I wouldn't buy as many games if I wouldn't have downloaded them beforehand, and if there's no demand, obviously the price has to drop.

Agree, piracy essentially is competition, and competition always lead to lower prices.

it will go up.
imagine you are selling drugs.
if you are the only one who produce the drug u can take any price u want.

so it would be with games. of course at some point the limit is reached but until then it will rise.
maybe there will be cheap indie games but most people want fifa cod half life and other "blockbuster" games and these games would be cost insanely much

Last time I checked PC games from the big publishers (EA, Activision) started very recently sporting $60 prices, because, why the hell not since people are willing to pay? Piracy and all, they decided to raise the price; not drop it or keep it the same.

Does it? There are something like 5-10 big publishers competing right now; yet all of them price their games as $60 on consoles and $50-60 on PC.

Why doesn't the competition drive some of them to price their games at $40?

We seen it with Call of Duty, they knew they were guaranteed to sell millions of copies but jacked up the price because they could, knowing that people would still pay the extra for a big name game and it worked out well for them

Price cartel or whatever you want to call it...happens all the time.
But ya,I kinda disagree too to the original question. Piracy has nothing to do with the prices going up.

Lets put it the other way. Prices will always be optimized in such way to maximize sales. They will be lower, if it increases the sales and profit. They will be higher, if it increases the profit.

Lowering price could actually be more effective, in theory, if there was no piracy. I mean, lower price doesn't mean a shit to user who downloads games anyway, but if there was no piracy it could matter.

Although my personal opinion is that prices would not really drop for new titles, but that price drop will be faster for older games, then now.

I said this the other day in a different thread and two other posters disagreed.

It only makes sense that buying games will now increase due to lack of piracy, it is hard as heck to find anything right now and nevermind new releases.

I seriously doubt that publishers will drop the price, if anything, they will raise them to "maybe" punish us pirates.
