So I will be going to NYC for 3 month at the end of the year.
I will be working as an intern, and need some help to organize some things beforehand, so I don't have to do everything when I get there.

I will probably need an bank account. I will get a paycheck, so I will need a way to make that into cash. Do I need a bank account for that? I do have a VISA card already, so I just really need a way to get my money.

I will also need some kind of contract for my mobile phone. I won't be using it much for talking, but a mobile internet flatrate is a must. I don't really care about free minutes, but data should be covered.

I will have a social security number, if that is important, but I will only get it once I have arrived in NYC.

Any help from you guys please? Smile

Eh, it'll be a lot easier to set everything up in person once you get there. Will take you like 30 minutes tops to set up a bank account at a bank. Banks aren't fucking gay and lazy like in Europe when it comes to business hours, nor do you need to setup some bullshit appointment.

What Mchart is right. Even when I set up a business account for a new corporation the process takes under 1 hour in person. Just have stuff like a Social Security Number (dunno what you would use), passport, and one other form of ID.

Appointment? Lazy? I've never experienced that in Sweden when going to the bank. Only time i've had the need to set an appointment is when i've needed help with a bankloan.

When you go into a US bank branch you can get whatever the hell you need done on the spot.

Whenever I've gone to a bank in the UK and Germany I have to make an appointment to do anything beyond the deposits/withdraw. The hours also really suck.

The hours is sucky - that I agree on.

Reason why You often need to man an appointment is cos the low amount of people working in the banks.
I'd rather see less people working there tbh Smile besides, who actually goes to a bank nowadays? Wink

Just because you don't have money doesn't mean everyone doesn't.

So what bank can you suggest? Obviously I don't want to pay much (or if possible anything) for my account.

And what provider can you suggest for a mobile contract?

Considering that the UK and Germany, in my experiance, are the least lazy when it comes to business hours - Yes, and yes, i've travelled to more then just UK and Germany. I'm not going to bother arguing this one with you as anyone who has lived in Europe and lived in the States knows that there is indeed a huge difference.

You don't pay anything for an account at any bank in the US besides keeping a minimum balance of 25 bucks usually. I'd say the bank with the best online features, which is USAA. However, only military members or their family can open an account.

I can't suggest a provider because it depends on the area. I have no idea who the best provider in NewYork is. I would think they are all good given it is new york though.

ING is big in N.America and they don't charge any fees for chequing accounts, maybe you can start one in EU and still access it in NA?

and agree with Mchart that basically any 'major' bank should have good services in NYC.

Again, in the US you don't need to make an appointment for shit. If I want a loan, I just go in and get in a loan.

They usually do both, apts or walkins. If it is a renewal they call and set up an apt, but you can walk in and wait for someone to be advail.
