|
 |
And I mean not just any PC game, but a PC game like the old ones.
Let me explain.
New games, especially console ports, or to be politically correct multiplatform games tend to keep the entertainment length / money ratio the same as if you would go to movies. We see the trend, 6-8 hour single player games, yearly sequels to franchises ... etc.
These are where the money's at. A franchise needs less marketing, games are easy, not immersive, and console players buy more games than PC users.
It's no coincidence then, that publishers will gravitate toward satisfying the shallow needs of this new casual audience. And when I say no coincidence, I mean it's their fault to begin with, that we arrived in here, because they influenced the consumer culture of these new casual gamers. After all, how would they know the value of 50 $ (translated to game quality and length), if they didn't experience what 50$ could get you some 15 years ago?
So, we're at this point, where ... we, the "old school" (wow, saying this at 24 really feels sad) have become a niche. We have huge expectations in exchange of our money (and we are morally correct), yet the demand we generate is almost negligible compared to the demand of the new casual audience. Those who still try to develop for us, those rare studios that still tailor their products according to our need, have to do so at the cost of profit (because creating a 60 hour game, and a complex one at that, costs more than creating a simple game of 6 hours).
If we want games of the quality we like, we should pay for it, I see no other way, to be honest. So the question stands:
Would you pay 100$ for a game like Baldur's Gate 2 with today's high production values? Or for any other deep, long, original (and risky) game, with the same production values as say, modern warfare 2?
I would, in an instant! If there's modding possibilities included, even more so!

Yes.
If the game's awesome, keeps me entertained for more than a month - definately.
I think by now, the price paid by me for WoW is just a bit under 1000$ for the total 5 years I've been playing it.

No. I'd get a russian version, or some other way to get the game as cheap as possible as fast as possible. If everything else fails, I'd wwait for a price to drop, or get it on console or rent (in case it's SP game) or finally buy used copy. But I would never buy any game that expensive, no matter how good or long. There is always alternatives to get it somewhat cheaper than usually.

The only way I would....is if I was guaranteed that a SDK was being released, the game supported mods, and will be heavily supported (patches for more than a week after release)
that would at least let me feel comfortable knowing that I wouldn't be stuck with an unsupported glitchy game.....

By all accounts, we are right NOT to pay that much money for a game, but here's what happened in the industry:
Whereas in the usual circumstances of the market, there would be competition, fierce competition for the money of the gaming audience: compete for that 50$, by offering more and more content and better production values. Yeah, that's what should have happened... but the gaming audience boomed, casuals flooded in, and they had no idea of what 50$ is worth, or in reverse, how cheap a good game really was. So with this massive expansion, and lack of information about the value of products, publishers seized the moment, and in a cunning way, didn't increase prices, they just decreased content ... to something like 20% in the most extreme cases. They got away with it.
So how do we establish the old standard back? Well, there's one way: reeducation of the target audience ... which will never happen ... ever. Not even in my pipe dream.
So, I see no alternatives of simply getting games of the quality games once used to have, simply because developers can make a much higher profit, by doing much less ... and there's the convenient scapegoat, piracy!

They're already pushing it with 60$, so no.

Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty

If you're talking about Poland, then this is definately not true. In the late 90s, the golden era of PC gaming, prices for major titles were around 130 PLN, and some games cost more than that (Microsoft's and ID Software's games IIRC) so if you take inflation into account that means they were much more expensive than now.
I'm not sure about the USA, so I'll assume they cost 50$ (please correct me if I'm wrong). 50$ in 1995 is the same value as around 70-75 $ now (again - inflation).

Not sure if I would. However I would pay regular prices for games with poor graphics. It's all the demand for better visuals that drives the production costs trough the roof. Older games didn't cost as much to develop and thus they didn't have to sell as many to make a profit.
This is also why I can't help but laugh when I see the same people complain about poor graphics and at the same time complaining about the current derp generation of gaming

Yes / and no - btw many of you already did this - eg mmo fans spent aroud 150 / year for game not counting paying addons. I could pay huge price for a game but the game need to be finished and supoorted - i prefer to buy few games / year but only these who really deserve that

So instead of developers/publishers improving their shit, we should pay more to 'stimulate' them to improve their shit? 50 bucks is way too much for most modern games, no matter how high the production values. Instead of raising the price for great games, the price should be lowered for the "dime of a dozen" games.

Like mentioned earlier, the games didn't use to be much cheaper. Back in... spaghettimonsterfromspace known when I bought Ultima 8 (well, mommy bought ), it costed 600 or 800 Finnish Markkas (translates to 100 or 130 €). These days I would not 'directly' pay such amount for any kind of game. What I mean by directly is, that I would not go to shop and dish out 100€ bill for a game, while I might do that via subscription to mmo.
