Mm, so after no signs of issues with my drives I attempted to install a game (legit but a binary rather than from a CD/DVD) my machine started to act dog slow.. a reboot later and I'm getting "Drive Read Errors".. Having left it for a while it seems to have booted fine..
Any thoughts on what to check ?
Gonna do a scan disk now..

I suggest checking the little things before moving to big changes. Checking the IDE/SATA and power cables is really important. I almost replaced my drive a month ago, but after replacing the SATA cable with a spare one, and moving the power to another PSU sleeve, everything works fine.
If that doesn't help, there is also the option the controller in the motherboard is not working properly, so try connecting the drive to another controller.
If all else fails, you will need a new drive.

Mmm.. left the chkdsk going all night, came back to the machine this morning and found everything to be fine. I re-downloaded the same thing again, attempted to reinstall it and met the same issues.. machine slowly crawled to a halt (as if drives reads where failing as it was trying to run).. eventually it just froze.. reboot later and bam, drive read errors.
I want to believe the issue is related to the software, but I cant think of why this would be happening! mmm..

Doesnt explain why the machine fails to boot afterwards though, plus I've been running on this setup for a while now and I've never encountered any similar issues.
Having left the machine alone for a while it is now allowing me to boot into windows again.. very odd..

Try changing the hdd controller the drive is connected to. It takes 10 seconds and you can eliminate the motherboard as a suspect.

Tried installing it in virtual pc or vmware?
Else try and boot up a Linux live cd like System Rescue Cd distro. There should be all the tools you need to check the discs, and the mandatory memtest86 option in bootup, to check your memory with, 2 succesfull passes.
