Get the latest Steam beta: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1740023

Quote:
- Changed microphone voice input from 11khz to 16 khz
- Changed voice output from 8khz to 16khz

- Moved game invites from friends outside of the chat stream, into their own panel in the chat dialog
- [Mac OSX] Fixed a problem where attempting to resume a paused/interrupted download could always report ‘server unavailable’
- Fixed games not launching automatically after resolving a cloud conflict
- Fixed download rate sometimes erroneously reporting very high speeds
- Added password strength meter when you change your password
- Added UI prompting you to choose a new password if you've had support change your password
- Added Steam screenshots feature. Press F12 in any game to take a screenshot. Screenshots are automatically uploaded to the steam cloud after exiting the game, or can be manually uploaded while in-game through the in-game overlay. Screenshots can be managed through the community site and can be published to your Steam Community Profile to share with your friends. Games that use DirectX 8 and earlier are not yet supported.

It also works for non-Steam games if you add them into the list of your Steam games.

Pretty cool, and thank God that they didn't include Facebook integration lol wut for the screenshots you take.

This thread can also be used to discuss whatever additional functionality is added in the future.

Maybe they could add "like"-button to every element in every Steam game?

oh yay. more steam related shit for me not to give a shit about.

fraps > valve

and microphone support in steam games is the worst invention since the plague, because enabling dipshits to talk in-game is the closest we have come to hell on earth.... and yes i know you can disable voice chat... i did that on DAY FUCKING ONE.

i wonder how valve would react to the suggestion for new functionality, to stop adding pointless gimmicky bullshit, and stream line the fucking thing so that it works properly and isnt loaded down with stupid shit for once?

I never really liked steam. I only used it for demos or to trick games like Lara Croft Laughing. I care even less about this addition. They looked at xfire maybe and got the idea to add this. I like xfire a lot, it's easy to use, doesn't eat resources like a pig. The problem is, since it was bought by some idiots it doesn't get much support, they are late with the updates, very late, even some AAA games don't get xfire support now.

The like thing was part of one of the the previous beta updates and is now integrated as the recommendations feature. Smile

http://www.cstrike-planet.com/shownews/409-Now-In-Beta-Personalized-Recommendations

Steam has improved but it's still a bit problematic, really likes to crash as well now.
(Silent for most users, a small dump will be created and sent to Valve as part of the Steam Error Report functionality, I get a ton of those whenever Steam Community is enabled - was needed for NVSE initially but now it's not really needed, overlay also likes to create these and Borderlands still crashes said overlay and sends a dump of it.)

EDIT: Ever noticed Steam loading a bit or making the OS show a loading cursors when exiting that's what I mean with it crashing silently and generating a dump file and report, they're under "SteamFolder\Dumps" and also part of some of the log files generated.

Well it's probably varied from system to system, it's not exactly a real crash either as my edit somewhat explains.

Also here's some info from Steam that could be anything for upcoming titles.
(Like say Red Redemption group, DLC listings, upcoming un-announced games and the like.)

Haven't posted much of these lately, most have been "TestApp" or DLC entries or already listed so there hasn't been much of interest.
(These are groups as well or subscriptions and not individual titles which hold a lot more info but still it might be of interest.)

I used steam chat for the first time few weeks ago and it was utter shit...

First of all, the 5 second delay is complete shit that we were experiencing and also we wanted to use Ventrilo as a voice chat but there is NO option to complete turn off steam voice chat

I mean, I speaking on Ventrilo with my headset BUT could hear my own voice five seconds lateras well as others, who spoke in Ventrilo..

I could hear voices coming from my speakers even after moving volume all the way down in steam :/...ohh well its total garbage

It's live for everyone now.

http://store.steampowered.com/news/5047/
http://store.steampowered.com/news/5044/

Quote:
New Features and UI updates

Steam Screenshots

* Added support for Steam Screenshots. Press F12 while in any game that runs the Steam Overlay to take screenshots, then publish them to your Steam Community profile, or anywhere else on the web. Each user is allotted 1 GB of Steam Cloud storage for screenshots.

Library Search capability and related navigation updates

* Added Search capability to the library for quick filtering of your list. Press Tab to move focus to and from the search field, press Esc to clear the search.
* Moved access to all library sub views (Games, Media Tools, Downloads, etc.) into the library's dropdown control

Voice quality improvements

* Changed microphone voice input from 11 kHz to 16 kHz
* Changed voice output from 8 kHz to 16 kHz
* Fixed the settings-dialog microphone test to correctly re-init the calibration client if the active voice device changes
* Reduced voice prefix buffer size from 200 to 100 ms, but increased trailing from 200 to 400 ms - reduces latency when transitioning from silence to active voice, but still should keep it from sounding like chat is cutting out mid-sentence
* Increased thresholds for voice activity detection, making it less sensitive
* Increased amount of gain applied to voice
* Changed disconnect message when a friend ends a voice call to ' has ended the call'
* Windows: Fixed microphone to reinitialize correctly if Windows signals that a device in the system has changed
* Windows: Changed voice output device for Steam to be the default communication device

Web addresses

* Added an option to display the client's URL address bar, and turned it off by default, given its limited utility
* Web views now include a "Copy Page URL" command in the context menu, to copy the page's web address to the clipboard

Game invites

* Moved game invites from friends outside of the chat stream, into their own panel in the chat dialog for improved discoverability

Account security

* Added password strength meter to the Change Password wizard
* Added a prompt to choose a new password if you've recently had Steam Support change your password on your behalf

General bug fixes

* Fixed game invites not working from lobby-based games
* Fixed games not launching automatically after resolving a cloud conflict
* Fixed download rate sometimes erroneously reporting very high speeds
* Fixed a crash on startup or when viewing Games page
* Fixed client hang which could occur while hovering on links in any HTML-based display area
* Corrected check box states in the Friends window menu to properly remain in sync
* Fixed bug where some downloadable content was not downloaded until the client was restarted
* Fixed a rare and small, but steady memory leak caused by the Steam Overlay in some full screen D3D10/D3D11 games
* Mac OS X: Fixed a problem where attempting to resume a paused/interrupted download could always report ‘server unavailable’
* Mac OS X: Fixed password input fields in the Steam Overlay to correctly receive input

edit tried it, it works as expected Smile

Another update today, they changed the audio codec to the one Skype uses.

http://store.steampowered.com/news/5161/

Quote:

* Changed Steam Voice chat to use the SILK voice codec
* Fixed Mac OSX overlay occasionally disappearing after 10+ minutes in game
* In game overlay for Mac OSX now handles cursor visibility better; specifically in the Sam & Max series.
* Fixed Mac OSX overlay responding correctly when window is reactivated by mouse click.
* Maximizing the Windows client should no longer prevent the user from accessing an auto-hidden taskbar
* The overlay will now automatically return to the game when accepting a friend invite
* Improved voice ducking prevention
* Fixed position of game invites in the chat dialog
* Improved handling of last modified times for cloud files.

http://store.steampowered.com/news/5100/

Quote:
Steam's voice chat system now leverages the SILK audio codec, developed and used by Skype, makers of the world's most popular voice communication service. The SILK codec provides a significant quality improvement over Steam's previous voice technology, at the cost of some increase in bandwidth usage. Steam Voice used to require 15 kbps of bandwidth, whereas SILK is a dynamic bit rate protocol which varies in its use of bandwidth between 8 and 30 kbps, depending on the range of data in the voice signal and current network conditions.

As of today's Steam client update, voice chat using SILK is available to all users of Steam. To start using Steam chat with SILK, simply click the 'Start Voice Chat' button within a friend or group chat on Steam. You can access chat from both the friends list at the desktop, or while in game using Steam’s in-game overlay. You'll find voice chat connectivity and reliability have also been improved with this release.

Steam chat with SILK is now also automatically available for all games that take advantage of the Steamworks Voice API. Valve's own Portal 2, set to release in mid-April, uses this newly updated system to enable voice chat in its cooperative gameplay mode.

Link Your Profile with Facebook and Find Your Friends on Steam
Quote:
Now it is easier than ever to find your friends on Steam. Just link your Facebook profile with Steam and see your friends who have done the same. Don't worry, we won't post anything to your Facebook wall without your approval.

Click here to link your profiles and get started.

Linking your accounts will also raise your maximum friend count in Steam to 300.

I think some kind of Facebook/Twitter integration will definitely come in the future to Steam, there are a lot of people who use them and would appreciate this feature, and if it's made optional (as everything Steam Community currently is, you can completely ignore the Steam Community tab in your client if you want to) it won't bother those that don't.
