The game publishers usually have databases of the retail keys. Keygen generated keys are random.

I also think theres someone else on this board that got a legit key like twice from using a keygen on different games.

Key algorithm can be in 2 parts, one used by installer and other only verified by online side.
You can reverse the installer one but you can't reverse the online server one and make keygenerator

Thats and I think its safe to say that they blacklist certain keys, such as:
0HTD-....
DEV-...
RZR-...
