According to more recent study, it seems yes, at least for software applications.
Take Microsoft Windows for example, if no one can pirate windows OS, everyone would be forced to use Linux or other free or cheaper alternatives. And Microsoft would be forced to lower price in order to compete.
Same goes to Microsoft Office. If no one can pirate MS office, everyone would be using alternatives such as StarOffice or OpenOffice, thus forcing MS to lower its price.

Ofcourse piracy does not help open source. As with out piracy, prices would force people to go into open source software and OSes.
I think the prices would not change a lot as more would go onto open source but there would be a bigger amount of people that would choose to pay for the software.

I think these people would go for much cheaper commercial alternative such as Easy Office Premium, which cost no more than 80 dollars. People who use warez software has the habbit of using ones with the highest price tag.

I guess in some cases that is true, people would choose to pick eg C4D (great student license) over Maya. But I would still fork out on some software more. But I guess less money would be put into hardware as you would have to spend some amount of cash on the software.

And open source advocates say if there's no piracy, more people would use open source software.

Plain and simple, Adobe Photoshop costs something like $400 or 500 bucks like 6-700 Canadian...its a great tool when it comes to digital graphic creation and editing, but really, is it worth THAT much money? and u have to pay for updates...hardly

then why not use free alternative like Gimp, or cheaper commercial products like paint shop pro. Thus forcing Adobe to lower price in order to compete with these cheaper products.

That holds true as long there are viable open source counterproducts or cheaper alternatives. I believe that piracy does for sure hurt Open Source more than the software being pirated.

Yep, making big companies richer, making small independent developers poorer.

Read somewhere awhile ago that Adobe like that people download PS illegaly. Since alot of people do it it gives them great advertisment and thats why they dont really care. For example, if you download and like PS, what program would you recommend to someone asking for a good pic program? Most people would say PS and then companys buy them so their employes can use them (if needed ofcourse) and thus making money for adobe. Piracy aint all bad. |
Oh i didnt know that
