http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv-movies/smith-won-independence-day-2-director-confirms-article-1.1379824

Quote:
The next alien invasion will have to happen without Will Smith.

"Independence Day 2," which was recently set for a July 3, 2015 release date by 20th Century Fox, will not feature the original film's above the marquee star, director Roland Emmerich confirmed to the Daily News.

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," said Emmerich, while promoting his latest film, "White House Down." "It would be too much.

"We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new," the German director added.

The filmmakers are hoping the sequel to 1996's "Independence Day" - which grossed a whopping $817.4 million during an era of cheaper ticket prices and helped launch Smith's career as an A-lister in Hollywood -- will be the first of a two part story, tentatively titled "ID Forever, Part I" and "Part II."

Screenwriter James Vanderbilt ("The Amazing Spider-Man," "Zodiac") is in the midst of polishing the original script by Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin. "We're not doing a total reboot, we're doing something that's totally unusual," said Emmerich.

The director wouldn't divulge what would be totally unusual in the plot of the new movie; there was one nugget, however, he didn't mind divulging.

"I think some aliens will be back," he said laughing.

...

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive"

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive"

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive"

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive"

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive"

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive"

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive"

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive"

Knowing Emmerich's movies it'll probably have a 150-200+ budget and Will Smith's movies are like 95% of the time a success in the Box Office (let's exclude After Earth Razz), sometimes a HUGE success, so I wouldn't give him the boot to save $.

He is expensive but I definitely consider him a box office draw for action movies.

To be honest, it was Goldblum that really made Independence Day anyhow, I certainly hope he's back for the sequel(s)

but he is expensive. he earned that. the man knows how to pick movies. AE was his son/father project. M night just didn't deliver Cool Face

ID4 sequel... the aliens... the destruction... emmerich after playing with the world in his movies.... I sense the new Alien movie is just gonna be a fantastic CGI fest. (almost as good as 2012)

Yeah, I love Will Smith and most of the stuff he does but Jeff Goldblum was the real star in ID4.

Can't stand Will Smith nowdays so it's fine by me.

Hell, he probably wanted to include one of his untalented kids, and Emmerich and the studio were like "LOLNO".

Bring back Goldblum and Pullman. Very Happy

Can anyone explain to me why they had to upload the virus to the mothership in ID4? They were always going to nuke it anyways which would drop the shield of all the smaller alien krafts attacking earth.
I never understood why they had to go down that route, uploading a mac virus to an alien ships computer system. Everything else about the film was great and you could suspend your disbelief, even how a bunch of rednecks were able to fly advanced fighter planes but that virus makes me cringe everytime...

They had to upload the virus so that it would spread to the other ships, disabling their shields. The nuke wasnt for dropping the shield, it was for causing confusion among the aliens.

yeah but brent spiners character said plainly that the alien ship they had captured in the 50's had started powering up during the latest days when the mothership got close to earth which again makes me think the mothership provided the smaller ships with power.
But that seems the most plausable idea, that the virus would drop the shields. Althought again as stated, a mac virus being compatible with an alien computer system is beyond me...
would've made more sense if they would just blow up the mothership in the first place.

Yeah, while no great movie, 2012 did entertain, and that's what it's supposed to do. Day after tomorrow on the other hand sucked balls imo.

I remember seeing id4 with my mother and my brother in the cinema when i was like 10-11 (it was rated 12 here, and it's not like america where your parents can decide you can watch it anyways), so I snuck in and already felt like a badass. After the movie was done i could not talk about anything else for the next couple of days. This was the greatest thing I had ever seen back then So Much Win How I miss being so impressionable...

I really don't like the idea of these sequels since it could mess with my childhood memories Sad

Edit: Oh and the movie had more than the alien virus problem. An alcoholic guy trained in flying a propellor plane can, and is suddenly allowed to, fly a fighter jet? I don't think so Wink

Well, I found Day after tomorrow to be much more "watchable" than 2012.
2012 had way, WAY too much stupid stuff going on, so much so that it really ruined it for me Sad

Well they all heave pretty much retarded storylines, so you basically have to leave your brain at the door with any of them. Instant freezing of the world, due to global warming is no exception here imo Wink 2012 at least had some huge explosions/destruction and bang boom crack crumble and so on Wink way more than DAT at least

I loved Day After Tomorrow too Very Happy The only part I didn't like was the ridiculous CGI wolves, the rest was thoroughly entertaining - same with Knowing and Deep Impact and Armageddon Smile They're disaster movies with the human race facing extinction each time, I'm not exactly sure what people are expecting other than glorious spectacle Very Happy

Oh a new ID, I wasn't expecting this Razz

I'm not 100% sure that I can enjoy this kind of movie as much as I enjoyed it when I was younger, but if Emmerich is directing it, the screenwriter is good, and Goldblum is on board, well there's a great chance that I might like it.

I'm aware of that but 2012 was way, WAY too much.
At least in TDAT, if I recall correctly, by the end the changes were permanent... for at least a couple of thousand years.

In 2012, after what seemed like a couple of months -> "well, everything seems to be getting back to normal levels, let's go to africa men" brain says NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE Sad

At least I remember the end to be something like that; a massive global change when compared to TDAT, but after a couple of months stuff was back to normal levels... yeah, no Razz

Nothing got back to normal at the end of 2012. The initial waves of flood water receded once the plates settled down again but in the end, billions of people still died when the world pretty much ripped itself apart and the flood waters covered the landmasses due to plate shifting. The only reason they said "let's go to Africa, men!" is because it was now elevated and had become the highest continent on the planet - everything else was underwater Laughing Of ALL the disaster movies, 2012 and Knowing rank up there on my "Holyshitthatwasbrutalawesome" meter for movies that fuck the human race and don't look back Very Happy

It's heavily implied at the end of 2012 that the only survivors left on Earth are the ones in the arks Very Happy
