Quote: | The next alien invasion will have to happen without Will Smith.
"Independence Day 2," which was recently set for a July 3, 2015 release date by 20th Century Fox, will not feature the original film's above the marquee star, director Roland Emmerich confirmed to the Daily News.
"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," said Emmerich, while promoting his latest film, "White House Down." "It would be too much.
"We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new," the German director added.
The filmmakers are hoping the sequel to 1996's "Independence Day" - which grossed a whopping $817.4 million during an era of cheaper ticket prices and helped launch Smith's career as an A-lister in Hollywood -- will be the first of a two part story, tentatively titled "ID Forever, Part I" and "Part II."
Screenwriter James Vanderbilt ("The Amazing Spider-Man," "Zodiac") is in the midst of polishing the original script by Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin. "We're not doing a total reboot, we're doing something that's totally unusual," said Emmerich.
The director wouldn't divulge what would be totally unusual in the plot of the new movie; there was one nugget, however, he didn't mind divulging.
"I think some aliens will be back," he said laughing. |

Knowing Emmerich's movies it'll probably have a 150-200+ budget and Will Smith's movies are like 95% of the time a success in the Box Office (let's exclude After Earth ), sometimes a HUGE success, so I wouldn't give him the boot to save $.
He is expensive but I definitely consider him a box office draw for action movies.

To be honest, it was Goldblum that really made Independence Day anyhow, I certainly hope he's back for the sequel(s)

he's almost as big as cruise in terms of draw.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_actors_by_total_box-office_gross
but he is expensive. he earned that. the man knows how to pick movies. AE was his son/father project. M night just didn't deliver
ID4 sequel... the aliens... the destruction... emmerich after playing with the world in his movies.... I sense the new Alien movie is just gonna be a fantastic CGI fest. (almost as good as 2012)

Yeah, I love Will Smith and most of the stuff he does but Jeff Goldblum was the real star in ID4.

Can anyone explain to me why they had to upload the virus to the mothership in ID4? They were always going to nuke it anyways which would drop the shield of all the smaller alien krafts attacking earth.
I never understood why they had to go down that route, uploading a mac virus to an alien ships computer system. Everything else about the film was great and you could suspend your disbelief, even how a bunch of rednecks were able to fly advanced fighter planes but that virus makes me cringe everytime...

They had to upload the virus so that it would spread to the other ships, disabling their shields. The nuke wasnt for dropping the shield, it was for causing confusion among the aliens.

yeah but brent spiners character said plainly that the alien ship they had captured in the 50's had started powering up during the latest days when the mothership got close to earth which again makes me think the mothership provided the smaller ships with power.
But that seems the most plausable idea, that the virus would drop the shields. Althought again as stated, a mac virus being compatible with an alien computer system is beyond me...
would've made more sense if they would just blow up the mothership in the first place.

Well, I found Day after tomorrow to be much more "watchable" than 2012.
2012 had way, WAY too much stupid stuff going on, so much so that it really ruined it for me

Oh a new ID, I wasn't expecting this
I'm not 100% sure that I can enjoy this kind of movie as much as I enjoyed it when I was younger, but if Emmerich is directing it, the screenwriter is good, and Goldblum is on board, well there's a great chance that I might like it.

At least in TDAT, if I recall correctly, by the end the changes were permanent... for at least a couple of thousand years.
In 2012, after what seemed like a couple of months -> "well, everything seems to be getting back to normal levels, let's go to africa men" brain says NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE
At least I remember the end to be something like that; a massive global change when compared to TDAT, but after a couple of months stuff was back to normal levels... yeah, no
