Among the nations on the Zemurian continent, the mighty Erebonian Empire has been quick to outwardly stake its claim militarily; yet politically, ugly bouts of internal conflict between the upper class and commoners attempting to rise to power have been steadily intensifying day by day. The Noble and Reformist Factions have been none too kind to one another over the years, and tensions between the two only stand to worsen if compromises aren’t made in the very near future.
Rean Schwarzer, like any other citizen of the Imperial Nation, is no stranger to these rising conflicts: the class system has been deeply embedded into the hearts of every Erebonian since the days of old. As a seventeen-year-old student preparing for his new life at Thors Military Academy, however, he notices that his crimson uniform differs from the standard ones issued to his peers—typically green for commoners, and white for nobles.
Enter, Class VII of Thors Military Academy. For the first time in the prestigious academy’s history, rank means nothing and skill means everything. With nine hand-picked students of various backgrounds and abilities, Rean included, Class VII readies itself to dive deep into the political quagmire that threatens not only them, but the Empire as a whole.

Taking place on the same continent as the fan favorite Trails in the Sky offshoot of Nihon Falcom’s storied The Legend of Heroes franchise, Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki in Japanese) is the first in the series to tread Erebonian soil and explore the inner political conflicts of this oft-mentioned powerhouse nation in detail. Delve into the expansive lore that has become synonymous with the series, enjoy school life and bond with fellow students to earn new abilities in battle, take advantage of speedy, tactical turn-based combat with the newly-developed “ARCUS” system, and uncover dramatic events that stand to change everything these two opposing social classes stand for.

This game is junk compared to trails in the sky series. Japanese modern high school life in the empire, Persona clone, 100% anime caricatures, typical shounen lead in many ways. While the world and overarching story is interesting, the rest is absolute trash.

well almost every jRPG is junk compared to TitS trilogy ... Cold steam is basically Persona+Suikoden ... so if you despise the school setting you will not enjoy it but still its one of the better ones (and also start of a trilogy)
I finished it despite hating the school setting. The second is much better so far (not finished with it), but i don't know where they'll take the series.
The second arc sounded like it was pretty good though (Trails in the Sky being the first, then that, then cold steel.) though it's not available in English.
Though yeah I thoroughly enjoyed doing a 100% completion of Trails in the Sky FC though I still have a lot to do in SC and then there's TC as well.
(Takes a while trying to get all the dialogue since it changes constantly, really nice touch - and hell on earth for any translator I suppose. - but yeah tons and tons of reading. )
Shame XSeed couldn't get the Ys VIII Lacrimoza game, they do a really good job with post-launch support although tech wise they'd need some more staff.
(Some Ys games, Trails in the Sky and Xanadu run under DX8 and the team they hired/contracted for Little King Story fell apart although Durante helped fix much of it but it's still a bit of a mess.)
A lot of the improvements on TC were even backported into the earlier releases of FC and SC for Trails of the Sky, will be interesting to see how the quality will be for Cold Steel and it's sequel whenever that gets released although I have faith that XSeed will try although patch notes are highly optional most of the time ha ha.
iirc they said late 2017/early 2018 for Cold Steel 2 .... might be quite likely that by the time Cold Steel 3 releases in english we will becatched up on PC
Too bad zero and ao is up in the air whether they get proper translations or not. Zero has a project going, but they seem to never finish nitpicking, but ao has nothing afaik
Here's some info tidbit that I wanted to get into the final article but ran out of time:
all builds of the game (Steam, humble, GoG) are the exact same executable. This means they are all DRM-free.
The game dynamically connects to those platforms (Steam, GoG galaxy) that are present and where you own the game. If none are present, it simply runs in DRM-free mode. (As a side effect, this also means that if you were to buy the game on both Steam and GoG, you could unlock achievements on both simultaneously with the same build )
Allrdy bought it will jump in after i finish the 3rd hopefully this weekend.

The asset data files aren't packed in any additional containers, but it would still be hard to manipulate them without the PhyreEngine toolchain.
Some things are easy to mod (all the audio files are plain wav), and you can do fun stuff by simply editing the xml files in data/ops with a text editor.
There's a ongoing effort with dumping the PS3's JP voice assets and using those though I haven't heard the English ones.
As a poster on Neogaf or perhaps it was the Steam forum said though this is a bit of a anime high-school type game so voice acting is going to be a bit so-so.
EDIT:
But that should at least be better than dubbed children show anime TV airings so that's something.
(And with less cut content too. )
A real travesty that these idiots don't allow us to use jap audio. I mean, almost everything has dual audio nowadays.
Unfortunately licensing jap dubs is almost always a nightmare and expensive as fuck, as far as i know XSeed at least asked but their conditions where probably out of this world as always so it won't happen that doesn't mean it can't be modded though, all the TitS games have Undubs and Evo Music mods now Xseed even made it easy and allrdy had the options hidden in the game so you just had to copy the files over.
