http://store.steampowered.com/app/538680/The_Legend_of_Heroes_Trails_of_Cold_Steel/
Developer: Nihon Falcom
Publisher: XSEED Games,Marvelous USA, Inc.
Release Date: Jul 2017

Quote:
Among the nations on the Zemurian continent, the mighty Erebonian Empire has been quick to outwardly stake its claim militarily; yet politically, ugly bouts of internal conflict between the upper class and commoners attempting to rise to power have been steadily intensifying day by day. The Noble and Reformist Factions have been none too kind to one another over the years, and tensions between the two only stand to worsen if compromises aren’t made in the very near future.

Rean Schwarzer, like any other citizen of the Imperial Nation, is no stranger to these rising conflicts: the class system has been deeply embedded into the hearts of every Erebonian since the days of old. As a seventeen-year-old student preparing for his new life at Thors Military Academy, however, he notices that his crimson uniform differs from the standard ones issued to his peers—typically green for commoners, and white for nobles.

Enter, Class VII of Thors Military Academy. For the first time in the prestigious academy’s history, rank means nothing and skill means everything. With nine hand-picked students of various backgrounds and abilities, Rean included, Class VII readies itself to dive deep into the political quagmire that threatens not only them, but the Empire as a whole.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Taking place on the same continent as the fan favorite Trails in the Sky offshoot of Nihon Falcom’s storied The Legend of Heroes franchise, Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki in Japanese) is the first in the series to tread Erebonian soil and explore the inner political conflicts of this oft-mentioned powerhouse nation in detail. Delve into the expansive lore that has become synonymous with the series, enjoy school life and bond with fellow students to earn new abilities in battle, take advantage of speedy, tactical turn-based combat with the newly-developed “ARCUS” system, and uncover dramatic events that stand to change everything these two opposing social classes stand for.
    KEY FEATURES
  • A World Rich in Depth for Veterans and Newcomers Alike
    The events of Trails of Cold Steel are expertly told so that longtime Trails veterans and casual RPG fans alike can equally enjoy its detailed, highly nuanced storyline.
  • New Link System Adds Depth to Combat
    Take advantage of the Combat Link System by bonding with your allies throughout the school year, netting you a variety of combat benefits including healing, guarding and more.
  • A Sleek Update to a Classic Growth Mechanic
    Trails of Cold Steel streamlines the classic “Orbment” magic system from previous titles with new “ARCUS” units, allowing for more ready access to abilities and quicker customization.
  • Experience the Game as Never Before
    50% more lines of English voice-overs have been added to the PC release, bringing a fresh experience to even those who have played it before on console.
Sequel is also planned for release:
This game is junk compared to trails in the sky series. Japanese modern high school life in the empire, Persona clone, 100% anime caricatures, typical shounen lead in many ways. While the world and overarching story is interesting, the rest is absolute trash.
well almost every jRPG is junk compared to TitS trilogy ... Cold steam is basically Persona+Suikoden ... so if you despise the school setting you will not enjoy it but still its one of the better ones (and also start of a trilogy)
I finished it despite hating the school setting. The second is much better so far (not finished with it), but i don't know where they'll take the series.
The second arc sounded like it was pretty good though (Trails in the Sky being the first, then that, then cold steel.) though it's not available in English.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/KisekiSeries
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/ZeroNoKiseki
Though yeah I thoroughly enjoyed doing a 100% completion of Trails in the Sky FC though I still have a lot to do in SC and then there's TC as well.
(Takes a while trying to get all the dialogue since it changes constantly, really nice touch - and hell on earth for any translator I suppose. - but yeah tons and tons of reading. Very Happy )
Shame XSeed couldn't get the Ys VIII Lacrimoza game, they do a really good job with post-launch support although tech wise they'd need some more staff.
(Some Ys games, Trails in the Sky and Xanadu run under DX8 and the team they hired/contracted for Little King Story fell apart although Durante helped fix much of it but it's still a bit of a mess.)
A lot of the improvements on TC were even backported into the earlier releases of FC and SC for Trails of the Sky, will be interesting to see how the quality will be for Cold Steel and it's sequel whenever that gets released although I have faith that XSeed will try although patch notes are highly optional most of the time ha ha. Very Happy
Too bad zero and ao is up in the air whether they get proper translations or not. Zero has a project going, but they seem to never finish nitpicking, but ao has nothing afaik
Durante pretty much ported this alone btw he wrote (or rewrote) the vast majority of the PC-specific code according to himself.
He's even playing it full speed on a GPDwin here after he ported the engine to dx11 (was opengl bevore like most vita/ps3 games):
Also, will you be able to comment on how Cold Steel PC's DLC scheme/bundling/pricing will work, or is XSEED waiting to talk about that?
Quote:
I don't have all the information about that - I do know from the implementation that there are both free included DLCs and some paid ones.
I'm guessing it'll be the soundtrack or some such but found it interesting.
Game is DRM free according to Durante:
Quote:
Here's some info tidbit that I wanted to get into the final article but ran out of time:
all builds of the game (Steam, humble, GoG) are the exact same executable. This means they are all DRM-free.
The game dynamically connects to those platforms (Steam, GoG galaxy) that are present and where you own the game. If none are present, it simply runs in DRM-free mode. (As a side effect, this also means that if you were to buy the game on both Steam and GoG, you could unlock achievements on both simultaneously with the same build Razz)
Allrdy bought it will jump in after i finish the 3rd hopefully this weekend.
Ah crap, well it's moddable too to an extent. Smile
The asset data files aren't packed in any additional containers, but it would still be hard to manipulate them without the PhyreEngine toolchain.
Some things are easy to mod (all the audio files are plain wav), and you can do fun stuff by simply editing the xml files in data/ops with a text editor.
There's a ongoing effort with dumping the PS3's JP voice assets and using those though I haven't heard the English ones.
As a poster on Neogaf or perhaps it was the Steam forum said though this is a bit of a anime high-school type game so voice acting is going to be a bit so-so.
EDIT:
But that should at least be better than dubbed children show anime TV airings so that's something. Very Happy
(And with less cut content too. )
Unfortunately licensing jap dubs is almost always a nightmare and expensive as fuck, as far as i know XSeed at least asked but their conditions where probably out of this world as always so it won't happen that doesn't mean it can't be modded though, all the TitS games have Undubs and Evo Music mods now Xseed even made it easy and allrdy had the options hidden in the game so you just had to copy the files over.
Was deleted, XSeed can't officially support it after all so having it posted openly could cause concerns from Falcom.
But it can be found here:
Update 1.1
http://steamcommunity.com/app/538680/discussions/0/1471967615843483293/
Quote:
Version 1.1 (Build 2011989) patch notes
Hello everyone!
I hope you are enjoying the game. If you are affected by some issue, I'm happy to announce that version 1.1 of the game just went online, which includes fixes to many of the more common problems encountered, as well as some new features based on feedback from the community.
It includes the following changes.
Bug fixes
Fix text rendering corruption issue when button prompts are displayed on some systems
Fix Depth of Field issue in cutscenes on Intel GPUs with MSAA enabled
Do not close the game when Alt+F4 is pressed and another program has the focus
Fixed some minor text issues
New Features:
Added an option to skip all movies
Added configurable speedup factors for Turbo mode
(separate factors for battle and field exploration are possible)
Added a "Mouse Sensitivity" option to the mouse / keyboard configuration menu
(also reworked mouse camera controls to eliminate acceleration)
Note:
If you encoutner any new issues with this version, you can revert to the previous version (1.0) by right-clicking the game in your Steam library, selecting "Properties", then selecting the "BETAS" tab, and chosing "version_1.0" in the drop-down menu.
Enjoy! We will continue to do our best to resolve any issues and improve the game further.
Just in case anyone else has this problem, the game didn't like more than one usb controller plugged in. Detached my HOTAS and the gamepad works fine.
