Capcom vow to return to Dead Rising after killing Puzzle Fighter revival
Quote:
Capcom Game Studios Vancouver launched a mobile revival of Puzzle Fighter last year. Despite building on a beloved puzzler featuring loads of Capcom favourites, this free-to-play version didn’t exactly catch on, and it’s soon to be gone for good. In-app purchases will be disabled following a final content update on April 23, while the game itself will be delisted on July 1, with the servers set to shut down on July 31.

The missed opportunity of a failed Puzzle Fighter aside, this does mean that “the studio is dedicating its focus to our flagship Dead Rising franchise.” Capcom Vancouver, formerly Blue Castle Games, have helmed the series since Dead Rising 2, and despite diminishing returns on the more recent sequels it’s natural that they’d return to it.

Exactly what form a theoretical Dead Rising 5 takes remains a major question, however. A few months ago, roughly 30% of the Capcom Vancouver team were laid off, and reports at the time suggested this was an attempt to streamline production on the next Dead Rising.

It’s possible we might see an idea of the new game at E3 this year, though given the studio’s recent struggles there’s certainly no guarantee. They’ve launched a new Dead Rising every three years since 2010, so if the schedule keeps that would put Dead Rising 5 as a 2019 release.

I somehow managed to finish DR4 even though it was... erm, well. Shifty Fellar

It's a decent enough IP, but I'd hope this one will be more like the previous entries and less like 4.

Yeah, let it just be an updated DR2 instead of that BS from DR3 onwards

Capcom has announced that it expects to record losses of approximately 4.5 billion yen from the termination of untitled projects that were in development at Dead Rising studio Capcom Vancouver.

Seems DR5 which was already known might be fine but most (all?) other projects from Capcom Vancouver have been terminated.

EDIT: No Dead Rising 5 might be dead too but then that would terminate the entire studio? Guess we'll see soon enough.

And there's still not a really good single player zombie game (for me anyway). Dying Light tries but is essentially a parkour/shooter which isn't really my cup of tea.

There was one game I enjoyed but it lacked polish (not the language), scope and size (can't remember the name, it was recommended by someone, not a big-name game) and lost me after a couple of hours due to flaws and some game play annoyances.

Road to Fiddler's Green?

That's one of the classical takes on the zombie setting at least, there's ZombieU (Zombie No-U after they ported it off the WiiU to other platforms? Razz ) but I think it also follows the more New-Zombie type games with runners, more action and less focus on horror or survival other than jumping between different characters as your current one is killed off.

And the old They Hunger trio of mods for Half-Life 1 but I don't think they were ever continued.
(Loads of mods for that game, some probably fairly obscure but really good stuff too no doubt.)

Dead Rising 1 keeps fairly close to the original formula too until the zombies get more aggressive during the second day onward's plus the numerous human psychos and other enemies and the tight timer requirements aren't for everyone if you're going for the better ranked endings or the true ending.
(Sequel and onward just moved further and further from that and more into comedy or dark comedy with a few dramatic though often still silly sequences of story.)

Oh man was that a cool game. I still remember the maps! Like that 4 player circus arena with zombies coming from 4 directions and you're armed with just fire axes. I'd been searching for a zombie game for ages so when i found that i was hooked immediately.

Been a few years since I played it but I do remember liking it.

As for Capcom Vancouver it seems the studios is closed entirely.

Quote:

In a statement to Kotaku, a company rep noted that “as a result of reviewing titles in development at Capcom Vancouver, Capcom has decided to cancel the development projects at this studio and will concentrate development of major titles in Japan.”

According to Capcom, 158 people will lose their jobs due to the shutdown.

The number of developers losing their jobs with this shutdown is high, though the studio has been losing people for some time. One source tells Kotaku that many Capcom Vancouver employees had been heading to EA Vancouver in recent months.

EDIT: Yeah a few years...13 to be specific since it looks to have been released in 2005 nearing the start of the fun years with Xbox360 and PS3 being the priority platforms and really wonky PC ports and all sorts of super amazing DRM schemes as the prior attempt failed.

A look into the history behind the game and it's cancellation plus some of the earlier Dead Rising titles. Smile

Always interesting to hear some of these things, game industry secrecy and obligations around NDA's and what I assume is a difficulty to remain in the business for even leaks around older projects or long since the developer studio or even publishing house folded makes for a lot of unknowns so yeah information on this subject is always fascination at least for how I see it.

Was nice in the early days when communication was a bit more open but that changed and even then it still varied before the whole thing blew up from millions to billions of dollars heh.

Anyways Dead Rising and it's history and Capcom Vancouver as well which I believe were involved in Dead Rising 2 and on although Capcom exerted more creative control and criteria as the series went on culminating with Dead Rising 4 and how it was received and a initial reboot and cuts for Dead Rising 5 and the studio and then a complete cancellation and shutdown for Capcom Vancouver.
(Think they were also involved in trying to revive Lost Planet...as a space Redneck horror drama comedy something maybe something similar here with executive meddling or something more. Hmm.)

Well still have to check the entirety of the video and yeah this isn't happening, Dead Island 2 probably is going to be in development hell and I believe Dying Light was struggling with developer differences and some other issues though that one might still see a launch unlike these other two projects.

EDIT
MT Framework was a fun engine too, wonder if RE Engine coupled with UE4 for what Capcom seems to be working with these days (And a few others?) will live up to that but it's a bit early to tell at least with the Over The Moon Engine.
(Which I would have imagined to be RE Engine as in the Resident Evil engine owing to it's initial usage in RE7 but nope.)

Solid PC ports too most of the time not entirely flawless but usually well enough compared to the PC port situation in the 2000's and 2010's and even nowadays.

Fun attention to detail in the original games too even somewhat still present in Dead Rising 3 although tuned and scaled down a bit though not as much as Dead Rising 4 would do plus other simplifications from the survivor system to the timer.

Made infamous mostly for the first game being kinda strict on what had to be done and when and turned into a joke by Dead Rising 3 before the fourth game removed it just about entirely.
(Survivor AI would also be much improved in the second game before again facing simplification by the third and nearly being removed other than as a bit of a token thing in the fourth game.)

Suppose there's little more to say, I enjoyed the series even as it turned more into comedy and then tried to be a respin of the second game again (But with plenty of changes and a number of additions.) and then this whole grim dark thing and try for realism by the third and some odd mix with the fourth game.
(Frank works it like a comedy everyone else in that game like it's a horror it gets kinda weird.)

EDIT:
And the psychopaths from a few unfortunate individuals in Dead Rising 1 (~mostly.) to the themed ones in the sequel and again a more removal into just mini-bosses of less note in the fourth game though I think this got altered(?) in some update or something because yeah of course there was backlash on changing yet another core mechanic or almost simplifying or removing it.

...Course they're memorable though it's how you got one of the early hella great weapons in the first game (3x magazine stackable for incredible durability too!) coupled with a fun fight and a sweet unlockable shortcut as a extra. Very Happy

Expanded on a bit more in the second game and then the third well eh they kinda still worked.
(It's the seven sinful goofballs and their grim-dark comedic story moment!)

EDIT: Yep just a bit into the video and there's a bit of executive differences between the studio and their various attempted projects and Capcom, then again it's difficult to say from early pitches and very early demonstrations or just concepts how any of these could have turned out if pursued further although it does mean a couple of months if not years of work and investment all comes to nothing.
