What other engines are left anyway? Everyone went proprietary, and Unreal Abortion has been a hot garbage for a decade now, with regards to almost any metric, from graphics to performance to tooling to customization.

I guess CryEngine. But it’s used in, what, one game every few years, typically shitwares. The most high profile new game to use that I can think of is Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. What was the one before that? Laughing

It's amazing how the most popular engine is still the one devs handle super poorly.

Anyway, Unity is super popular too. I see it basically in every indie game.

Right, forgot about Unity, but I wouldn’t put that on the same level as CryEngine or Angina. Its rendering capabilities at a far lower level, the performance characteristics are different, etc.

What jumped out at me is wow those are some slow scavengers, so they've made it far easier in the beginning of the game.. plus you can use the bow to make it even easier. You didn't really aim in the original it was all dice rolls which obviously wouldnt fly today. So that will make the early combat even easier if you use ranged.

The atmosphere, dialogue, npcs etc seem on point though. Gfx look good enough. That ranged attack crosshair is awful and needs to go. The melee combat is laughably slow, yes i realize this is the early game when you have novice level of melee skill but my 98 year old bedridden grandfather could swing an axe faster than the PC Laughing

Looks like they're trying to also mimic the animations from 2001...

"We’re thrilled to announce that the Gothic 1 Remake Demo – Nyras Prologue will be available to @everyone during Steam Next Fest, running from February 24 to March 3!

The Demo will be available starting at 24 februari 2025 kl. 15:00."

It's a bit lame though that this "demo" is not even from the real game. it's again just a "showcase."

if i want to look at showcases of ue there are many, and sure they can be impressive, but it's not games and in 99% cases it's not something that is finalized, it's just to get views. Not that it means this has to be that, but, it's also not something i think gives great vibes.

...after a while you do start to wonder if things are vaporware or not Embarassed

Did a lot of the animations get outsourced to an Indian dev studio? There's a lot of head nodding when the NPCs are talking Laughing

Overall the game looks great though.. looks janky enough to please old fans.

Demo is out. 30-60 minutes long, depending on how much you explore.

Pretty good I guess. Combat could be better, but at least you can hit multiple enemies (and weapons get stuck on rocks/trees). I will wait for the full version, but for now I'm cautiously optimistic.

Yup. It was simple, but elegant. You could kill a much stronger enemy If you blocked properly. And if you got the timing right even as untrained you could swing fairly smoothly.

The demo and teaser are two completely different games.

TBH I will probably buy the game when it launches. I expect bugs and jankiness, but want to see how they built on the original. Demo shows they did not make the world unnecesarily large

looks nice, absolutely feels like a Gothic game.
Character moves like he's in mud.

water caustics! Swimming under water looks really great and they didn't forget to add the little details (looking at pathetic games like Avowed lol...100m... fucking losers)

Lol it's one of the games that I can't see shit in the dark on my VA monitor.
Very uneven graphics the enviroment looks great and then come npc and mob models.

Also that camera montage in the beginning while Nytras speaks with Diego. WTF? is this Taken?

I like it. Still rough around the edges, and a bit restrictive, but I think it's much more aligned with G1 than the first demo was

Couldn't disagree more, i think the models are really terrific. Very even graphics.

"Taken"? Why? Because someone has a harsh voice? lol..

They just need to work on the responsiveness a bit. Please don't copy that from the Gothic games, "it adds weight" suuure, but it's so annoying to feel like you're driving a tank.

Although the limited demo comes with some UE shenanigans and extra sluggishness, it's evident that the devs are heading in the right direction after the previous misfire. The spirit of Gothic is there this time around in terms of tone/atmosphere and dialogues free from modern quirks (including the trademark bluntness Very Happy), with the weighty combat reminiscent of the ol' formula which is positive. As always, I'd rather have a new entry than a remake of something I've already finished (twice) but hopefully, the changes and additions should be enough on paper to keep the deja vu effect at bay.
