http://www.armadilloaerospace.com/n.x/johnc/Recent%20Updates
the quake 3 engine source is gonna be released soon. This can be good for example some good mods have been made with this game: Enemy Territory for one and with the source they can be developed further. But then again i just think about the problems it can cause with hacking and the fact that source SDK is now around and the quake engine is dated. What do you all think

Think about it : Quake 3 engine with all new shaders and bump mapping/Normal mapping. That would seriously own! On the other side, alot of cheats and hacks will be made.

I am all for it.
This will be good for small developers, who may take ideas from quake 3 engine and implement them in their own creations. For example net code and so on.

If you read his blog, you can see that he doens't intend to release all of the source code. at least not at once, so we'll if the source code he wrote to protect the games will be released.
Still its cool if it gets released!

Very good because now it can be ported for the Intel 2700G chip so you can use it on for ex the Axim X50V. It's very kind of ID software doing this.

this is great news because small independent groups can now use this engine to make their projects a reality and make them look damn good, too. for example i was blown away at the turn-based xcom remake UFO: alien invasion(http://ufo.myexp.de) which uses the quake 2 engine. maybe they can now rewrite for this engine? anyways great news. as for hacking who the hell plays q3a online anymore anyways? good engine but never could compete vs ut.

Well duh they arn't going to give it away for free when they can still make money off it. They did this with quake 2 and quake 1 engine. It will be nice considering what was done to doom engines as of late.

great, the engine isn“t the newest and no one will buy a game with such an engine but it will support young and new developers.

Half-Life 2 was built on Quake 1 not Quake 2...

Actually it was built on Quake 1 and Quake 2 technology.

Well, as Carmack said; "there are even bits of Quake III code in Half-Life 2", so I don't concider this such a great thing.
Besides, with Quake III, you already got such a great game that there is no need to update it. Graphics doesn't make gameplay.

You know Tenebrae?! -> http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=screenshots.txt
and Tenebrae 2 -> http://www.tenebrae2.com/
Currently both are based on quake 1... but Tenebrae 2 will move to Quake 3 when it's open source...
I would say it doesn't look that bad ^^

I doubt the Axims, or any PDA for that matter, will have the brawn to pull this off at a reasonable FPS... Don't forget that some handtops based on the 1GHz Crusoe chips are getting someth like 4fps on Q3. I doubt a pda CPU/video is going to be able to pull this off.
I'm an X5 Adv. owner, and mine barely drags Quake 2 through @ a playable fps, with overclocking and at the vertical resolution (240x180). Unless Intel's new chips blow everything else off the board, it's not going to be able to handle 320x240 full screen. And at 240x180, the capabilities of the engine are comparable to Q2.
OTOH it will be very interesting to see what people can make of this with normal and bump... if someone can hack it to accept texties of 256x256, or at least 128x128, and buff up the physics, we may have an engine that rivals Doom 3. OpenSOF, here I come...

LOL! You can't compare the X5 advance to the X50v. I also have the x5 adv in possesion and I now It's sluggish. For now I only use it as a remote control for all tv, hifi etc devices I have.
The X5 advance has a pxa 25x cpu clocked at 400mhz without any video chipset. The X50v has a pxa27x cpu clocked at 624mhz with a 16mb intel 2700g video chip. Intel did run a Quake 3 demo at decent fps on the keynote where they presented some new stuff. The show is of course available ona downloadable video.
You won't believe the screen quality together with the antialiasing and the video decoder capability on this device. Just look at the PSP. It has 2mb available for the video chipset while the Axim x50v has 16mb. There is already a engine called Yeti3d that has been improved for the X50v and it runs very well and the graphics are pretty good too.
The x50v is on a whole another level even compared to the other new VGA ppc's.
edit: Here is a video of Quake 3 arena running on the PowerVR MBX Lite core that also exists in the Intel 2700g chip: http://www.mitrax.de/data/files/bilder/OpenGL%20ES%20Q3%20MBX.mpg
I also just got a link of some new opengl-es demos made for the X50V. Truly amazing I must say.

Its called MOHPA.
Some people here really have no idea how much the quake engines have been used.
