my c:/ partition has only 19GB Laughing of space and vista just keeps on munching that space for no apparent reason, I only got 160mb, I busted my balls off to free 1GB before and it just keeps on munching space and leaving me on my ass and a lot of shit needs space on c:/ to install

any useless crap I could delete from vista to free a significant amount of space?

It has nothing to do with System Restore, as it will shrink when the OS needs more space.

It's probably the WINSXS folder. That one tends to grow over time. Follow this guide to move that folder to another drive. This will free you at least 5GB.

Yeah haha.

I ran into the same problem a few days ago. Made a 15GB partition for Windows 7, and after two days of use it started crying for space lol. Now I have 6.52GB free. This WINSXS is fucking awful.

I always turn off system restore and hibernation.

Code:
powercfg -h off
in the console for no hibernation

You have a 64bit version of the OS, but probably open a 32bit version of the console (cmd.exe). You need to put the files in the SysWow64 folder (which is the 32bit version of System32, the naming is confusing, I know). Smile

You sure you put it in the correct \System32 and \SysWow64 folders? Because my Windows 7 is in drive H:\Windows, but when I was following the guide I noticed I was putting the files in C:\Windows because of old habbits. Laughing

Ahahah yes, sorry, had the same problem but forgot. It put them in SysWow64 because WinRAR is 32bit, while cmd.exe actually is a 64bit app. Smile

My C:\ for Vista x64 is 30GB so I can barely manage. I can't use C:\ for anything else, and it's annoying that Office and Creative Suite needs to store some of files on C:\, making me suffer with ~4GB free space after a few months of folder's WinSxS growth. One day when I can get a hold of another 1TB drive I'll just extend my Vista partition to 50GB or so (I know it's possible to extend it with 3rd party apps but it's too risky without backing up data). You can do that with Windows' dynamic discs. You then treat each drive as a volume, and can merge volumes on the fly. Smile

50gb partition i use for vista 64, 20gb or there abouts is usually free, I dont have no churning or problems with that to be honest..
I used to shut of all the stuff for backups and all sorts as well but since the os settled down after its indexing and god knows what I can safely say its been running great..

I get about 24% usage on bootup with all my wacom drivers/logitech/ati running etc oh and nod..
