essentially it looks the same, nothing radically different.

Likewise the same applies to Half-Life 2 and it's predecessor.

Looks technically better, but given the advancements in technology and software you'd expect that.

And it's not like those effects have been designed by them, bloom (etc) are stuff that seems to accompany any latest game nowadays.

Also I'm not judging the gameplay as I haven't played it.

Remember this is a peter molyenex game and you can't take anything he says at face value.

only once you've played it for yourself.

isn't that true for almost any game/developing studio, it's called marketing

It's especially true for this guy though, and he's so amiable that he could sell you a 12 year old prostitute and a lifetimes supply of crack cocaine if you weren't paying attention.

Nice, big ideas and he knows how to sell them - but ultimately the games are just games like any other.

Black and White is very well made and entertaining, but like Republic the revolution it is only a drop in the ocean compared to the hype generated straight from the horses mouth. We aren't talking blurb on the back of the box written by professionals, but speeches from the head programmers and designers themselves.

Thanks for posting that, damn the game looks so good. They've also upgraded the graphics a bit, or maybe that was part of the plan, but those greek helmets have like symbols in them and such, they used to be just plain helmets. Damn i want this game.

Same with the picture of the vikings these days. Many games picture their helmets made of shiny metal with horns. That's not true because they didn't have any horns. They were made of metal but did not shine and they weren't adorned with jewelry and stuff. That red beard stuff is also fake together with pretty girls etc.
I guess they take everything from the tales instead of looking deep into history.

I guess that glowish looks on the third screenshot is some type of dx9 shader. It's the same in Age of empires 3. Looks great.

Smile

They went GG with upgrading those greek helmets with symbols and such. Here you can see that in real life some greek helmets also had those well symbol/print thingies on them:

I must say the greek helmets are quite nice they all look, well, elegant, rich, original, mighty. Though personally i like the roman helmets better Smile

Shit, that must feel pretty heavy to the head. I can't imagine wearing that but they look great. I agree that the roman armaments together with their helmets are more pleasing than others.

Thinking the same thing, but the thing that kinda seems off, is that the crests of those helmets, well they are not hair, they are steel or what ever other substance those helmets are made of. They can't be real so maybe it's not accurate. But yeah, those helmets alone are probably heavy, let alone if the crest is not hair.

Roman helmets were made to protect as much as they can and really to be as light as possible, they also have the crests, but that was really for recognition, in acient greek times/armies almost every soldier had such crests, nice, yes, but heavy as you said Smile

EDIT: LOL talking off topic with a mod roxxx

If they made a game like Populous using the B&W engine I would play it, hell possibly even buy it, but I won't bother with any game that features giant Tamagochis.

I agree. The 'babysitting' aspect of the first b&w completly killed what could be a great game. It was fun playing with the people, but trying to
teach a monkey/cow that it should not eat poo, by smacking it on the head is not enjoyable for long.

The real problem was that the avatars were not really intelligent or indepth as they were originally touted. Tamagotchi is an overstatement, they were a lot more basic.

I personally love the idea but for it to work there needs to be more life in them, a lot more depth. But I don't think they ruined Black and White at all - if you didn't want to focus on the avatars, you didn't have to.

In a recent article Molyneux talks about B&W 1 and it's flaws. He went on about how BW1 was really a tech demo than the game he wanted it to be. He's planning to fix all that in the sequel. I'm personally going to keep my eye on it.

What? NOT eat poo? How the hell else am I supposed to dispose of it?

Besides, It's hilarious watching them do it then try to throw up but you beat the shit out of him and he's force to eat his crap. I'm sure there's a fetish porn website devoted to "Shit eating B&W Creatures".

Guild Wars @ the fact that its free
Juiced @ the respect system & focus on old-school RACING, not styling
Empire Earth 2 @ all the new gameplay functions
Silent Hunter 3 @ the fact that its the only real subsim
Earth 2160 @ the alien race that only clones and morphs instead of the usual RTS buildings
GTASA @ the fact that it IS the only game with more than 1 city, seamless, and the ability to walk, drive, fly, and skydive in a non-alpha/beta enviroment

All those ideas have been done before though.

We're talking about real originality, not just some little feature like peon management or something.

Well he asked for examples, and i gave some examples.
If we are gonna be picky, B&W have nothing new either, before B&W there was both Populus and Tamagochi..

LOL!

Please, don't talk shit. Populous didn't have pets, and Tamagochi has no environment or game behind it.

Black and Whites gameplay was unique at the time.

The 1st one was indeed interesting, fun and different, but at some point it became a vague game with a vague gameplay where the most interesting thing to do was to tamagochi-like take care of our creature and solve some of the mini-quest of each level wich held for some more interest for the game !!

Just think about it, besides having fun with the tamagochi and solving mini-quest in each level what else you did in the game?
Mini-quests were fun but they needed to be included in gameplay and not become the center of gameplay !

This one seems more strategical, more focused on doing something in concret and less vague
ie: evolving cities, armies, army clashes etc
