So a buddy has GTA4(but this could be about any other steam sp game) on steam, what if i made a seperat steam install with its own folder, i login to his account, download the game, start it once, log off from steam, turn off internet connection , login to the steam account but it will probably give an error, will i still be able to play GTA then?

i figure ill ask before spending many hours and bandwith trying it myself.

You can play offline once you authenticate the games contents of an account. So in other words, yes you can play the game offline while your friend plays online (connected to steam SP).
