Well interesting things are in discussion but i still can't solve my problem with displaying Crash Bandicoot 2 in full screen without black bars... on epsxe. Is there even a way to do that. Have somebody managed to run it in full screen.

Well ok, this is interesting. Seems a few people having issues on properly configuring this wondrous emulator, so I'm here to help! We'll tackle this section by section, just to make sure you've all got a handle on things, hey - I'll even hold your hand and guide you with snazzzzzzzzy pictures too Laughing
Remember though, while "other" emulators are designed for quick-playing, ePSXe is called ENHANCED for a reason. Take the time to configure it properly, as I'm about to show you, and you'll have a faithful emulator for life Razz

I don't want to hear any complaints about "but my machine is too slow!!!!111" - I run ePSXe on my laptop, a Celeron 1200mhz with 128mb RAM shared with a SiS 730S IGP. It runs great using the FAST settings Wink

=Note=

This guide was created quite some time ago and it was made for ePSXe 1.60 and Pete's 2.08 plugins. I'm aware of more recent releases, but they all stay fundamentally the same.

Installation

First, you'll need to download the emulator itself, which can be found HERE. Download and extract it to a folder of your choosing, one named ePSXe would be ideal Razz
Once you've got it "installed", you'll need to find the BIOS image. I'm not going to link to it here, just in case I get my wrist slapped Wink However, a quick Google Search should prove fruitful. Once you've found it, put the file into the BIOS folder of your newly-created ePSXe install.

Next, we need some plugins. I'm a strong advocate of Pete's GPU plugins, as they offer the best compatibility and speed. So I'll be creating this tutorial based on those. Let's get to it! Very Happy

You've got many options, all of which depend on what graphics card you have. For newer nVidia and ATi cards that support PS3.0 (X1k series and 6/7-series respectively) there is simply NO better plugin than Pete's OGL2 - You can grab that HERE. Download that and unzip to your PLUGINS folder.
If you've an older nVidia/ATi card that lacks DX9C (PS3.0) then your choices are either Pete's OGL or Pete's DX7/DX6. You can find all three in one zip, found HERE. Again, extract to PLUGINS folder.

nVidia has much better support for OGL-based plugins, while ATi is the ruler for D3D. You can't damage anything, so feel free to experiment.

Next, we need to get you some SPU and CD plugins. Generic CD/SPU plugins are built-into the emulator, so you won't need to download any of those, however - you'll need a decent SPU plugin as the generic one just isn't good enough for those pesky Square games, hehe
So, the one I highly recommend is Eternal SPU Plugin 1.41 - that has the absolute best and most accurate PSX sound and you can find it HERE. Once again, download and unzip it to your PLUGINS folder.

Ok, you're done with Installation! Now let's get you configured for play!

Configuration

Now for the pretty pictures Smile When you load ePSXe for the first time, it guides you through standard setup by using a Wizard guide. So guess what? We're going to be doing that Smile

Start the Wizard!

Choose your BIOS!

Choose your GPU Plugin!
(I've included screenshots for Software/D3D6/D3D7/OGL/OGL2, aren't I nice?) This is also for looking good with the best compatibility, so if you have a really slow machine, you would be better off using pSX or CVGS. There are two options you can try, if you're not feeling like experimenting or copying my settings. FAST and NICE. Clicking either of those will change settings to run FAST, or look NICE.
Anything with a BOX around it (yay for mspaint) - make sure your settings are the same. Especially in regards to OFF-SCREEN DRAWING!! If you're playing any FF games, you NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED those set to at LEAST Enhanced else you won't get the battle menus.

Configs for SoftwareMode, no Fixes needed
- FAST
- NICE

Configs for D3D/D3D-DX6, with Game Fixes
- FAST
- NICE
- FIXES

Configs for OGL, with Game Fixes
- FAST
- NICE
- FIXES (Same as OGL2)

Configs for OGL2, with Game Fixes - Note, only BEST LOOKING config is shown, because if you're using OGL2, you've got a card that can handle it Laughing
- NICEST (the absolute ePSXe Experience©)
- FIXES

~Update~

Pete has released v2.9 of his awesome OpenGL2 plugin, a few new features and changes were implemented, so I'm including mine here. Game Fixes are the same; 0x002 "Ignore Small Framebuffer Moves" these are for FF7/8 and require Offscreen Drawing set to 1, Framebuffer Effects set to 2 and Framebuffer Upload set to 2. The old FF9 triangle fix (0x0200 G4 Polygon Cache) is no longer used, it's fixed natively. Keep an eye on "Stretching Mode" at the top as well, some people prefer keeping pixel/aspect ratio and don't like stretching, so adjust it per taste Smile If you exhibit scenes with green/purple borders, usually around pre-rendered backdrops, then set Texture Filtering to 4: Extended w/o Sprites. Unfiltered 2D

Choose your SPU! (There's nothing to configure on the ePSXe SPU Core)
- ePSXe SPU Plugin
- Eternal SPU 1.41

Config for Eternal SPU - Eternal is used if you want the most accurate PSX sound.

~Update~

Another update here, especially on ePSXe SPU Core 1.8.0; Most people are quite fine with the new internal ePSXe SPU core, it has come leaps and bounds over previous sound cores and is actually now one of the most accurate. Eternal has more sound enhancements but, just like various other options here, it's taste subjective. If you choose to stick with internal ePSXe you won't be disappointed, I'm sure. The "Choose your SPU" page shows options that are now enabled by default; "Enable CDDA" and "Enable XA" so don't worry about those.

Choose your CD! - Choose the CD/DVD drive you'll be loading your PSX games off. IE, real drive or VirtualDrive.

If running Win2K/WinXP, choose ePSXe CDR NT/2K Core

- Win2K/XP

If running Win9X (95/98/ME), choose ePSXe ASPI Core

- Win9X ASPI

Configure your controller!
Choose Digital/Analog F5 if you have an analogue joypad. Pressing F5 ingame switches between them Smile

- Joypads!

Almost Done!

You're done! Congratulations, you now have a nearly-100% perfect emulator. There, that wasn't so hard, now was it? Razz Just click FILE and then choose to either RUN CD (if you've got a CD in the drive/mounted) or click RUN ISO (to browse for, and run, a .BIN/.IMG/.ISO you may have)

Just remember that certain games are going to have issues no matter how you configure the emulator (Front Mission 3, sadly, is one of them. It has a tendency to crash when doing damage to LEG PARTS in a battle, which is a bug/glitch that happens on any emulator to my knowledge)

-=Clarification=-

In the section where I show how to choose your memory cards, please note that the F: drive path is MY OWN! *laughs* You can use any path you wish - and to create a memory card, simply type it's name however you wish. Once you save a game, ePSXe will automatically create the card for you.

I put a LOT of work into making this guide, so I bloody well hope this helps! Have fun everyone! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Comparison between a properly configured ePSXe and a *coughlamecough* pSX 1.8 setup.
ePSXe 1.60 on the left. pSX 1.8 on the right.

Final Fantasy VIII with pSX and/or PS1 hardware

Final Fantasy VIII with ePSXe using my settings (which can be tweaked to get rid of purple outline on some textures

And, as Leo said, certain games prefer 2D Sprite Filtering to be disabled, which would fix the slight aliasing as evidenced in the text above. Just experiement, you can't break anything! You can even change graphics options "on-the-fly" using Pete's plugin and the "action" keys (insert, home, pg-up, pg-down, end, delete)

I would strongly recommend updating to 1.8.0, a lot was improved and enhanced - including the internal SPU which is incredible now. Really nice FF sound effects, unlike previous internal SPUs which had really terrible sound in FF games.

Any time, mate, and thank YOU for helping me with Makaron. The emulator is SWEET! Been blasting on Record of Lodoss War all morning Very Happy

Can't seem to play Sonic Adventure 2 though, it crashes on the first level after the second ramp-jump.

Heh, emulation. It's an uphill struggle ^_^

Thanks a lot man!!!!!!Now it all seems nice. Apparently the game was made to run with black bars so no problem with that. Only one thing though - in my opengl2 plug in there are more options in resolution and colors like stretching mode and render mode. What are they for? I usually set them to standard.

I don't have the newest plugins yet (I lost my entire emulation drive a while back, including over 150GB of ROMS - not counting MAME, and I've been kinda dragging my heels over getting it all back)

Can you screen-shot your plugin config page, please?

Why have you enabled windowed ? Maybe that's why you have stretching options.

I don't have ePSXe setup atm to check. I remember doing this stuff 7 years ago lol ...

X-Files was a BIATCH to get to work properly.

Ah, gotcha. Stretching Mode is for, well, stretching the image. Most (if not all) PS1 games are 4:3 aspect ratio, which will give horrid black borders on 16:9/10 aspect monitors - if you can live with Hor+ stretching, then you can use that drop-down selection for making the image fit completely on your screen. I wouldn't recommend it however, mainly because most games will look ugly as hell.

You can play around with Render Mode options, but most games are more than happy with standard Lv0. Again, you can change it and not cause any damage - so don't be afraid to experiment with it Smile

VGAdeadcafe wrote:

Actually, for WS monitors that don't have 4:3 aspect ratios and correct pixel placement (a lot of WS monitors I've seen are crappy outside of their native resolution) Windowed mode is the best to chose as it preserves the aspect ratio without borders or stretching, compared to FS mode.

No i haven't. I just enabled it for now to see if the black bars appear in window mode. And they do. Now i'm sure it's from the game.

I'm having so much fun with Makaron, it's criminal! (literally, heh, my CDI/GDI collection is growing nicely. 41GB and rising!) The emulator is as revolutionary and impressive to me now, as Chankast was when that was first released. I can't believe how far along it is! Sure it lacks behind NullDC in terms of image support, but hey - considering the benefits, I really can't complain.

It's run easily 90% of all the games I've tried - and run them perfectly too, or as close to perfect as we're gonna get from a beta emulator. The games that don't run on Makaron, or run with severe graphic glitches, I just use NullDC instead (like 18 Wheeler, it's missing the entire HUD in Makaron, but looks - and runs - perfect in Null)

I am incredibly impressed.

I take it all back, my man; this IS the best DC emulator (shame about Silver though, the voices don't work - so I had to revert to Null with the NullAICA plugin - and then the sodding game crashes after your first battle against granddad Crying or Very sad)

In all fairness though, it seems Makaron is considerably more compatible than NullDC is, with the added bonus of proper shadow and fog effects.

Can't wait to see what Deunan brings with his next release.

I'm gonna try this Makaron. For my Shenmue rom. Smile But wich version is the best?
Well i tried 10 - 1 and it seems i cant change the resolution Mad
But anyway i can't even boot the GDI files. Guess it needs some more settings.
Well it can't boot. Only black screen. But i'm happy with nulldc. It at least runs.

.... it says nothing about a guitar. It says "you must have a microphone to play vocals" You don't have a microphone, so therefore you can't sing the vocals. So yeah, just press continue like it says.

My version came with the bios working. But i didn't manage to make the cdi file to run in the emulator.I did some changes to the ini file GDRom and i got a black screen when i select play game. I tried than to change the cable settings and graphic settings in the other ini and nothing worked.

First, try looking on the OFFICIAL forum. I don't have every single PS2 game ever made- and I sure as hell don't have any sing-along games :-\

Secondly, not every game works perfectly - and some don't even work at all. This could be one of them seeing as how it's pretty recent.
