Because they do. I also watched the vids and waited for the game which is not worth waiting. But maybe you'll like the game.

Well the manual (Page 6, controls) mentions that a controller is needed for Co-op so it might be the usual split-screen stuff, albeit that might be wrong, won't know until someone has played the game. (Steam forums perhaps?)

EDIT: Kept reading, page 7 confirms it, only SP and local Co-op multiplayer on the same computer via gamepad (Required).

EDIT: Very few enemy and weapon types as well but it might still be a OK shooter.
(Seems fairly short though judging by comments in the console section.)

Wow, just wow Terminator Salvation is GREAT!

Okay I have played the entire game and completed it on the medium difficultly.
This game is great, and is the best movie type game that I have ever played.

Pros:
- If you are a fan of all or most things Terminator than you have to buy this game, or if you like shooters in anyway than you have to atleast rent this game.
- This game has non-stop action and it is intense, sometimes so intense that even on the medium difficultly I found myself dying in a few parts of the game and I had to redo most of those parts a couple of times before moving on to the next location.
- The gameplay is wonderful as you will find yourself using cover alot, because if you don't and try to take on any of the Terminators with guns blazing than you will be dead before you even put a dent in the metal of one of those machines. As for the controls they are spot on and work fine without any issues.
- This games graphics aren't the best that I have seen, but are still great. Most parts of the game look beautiful and some do not. For instance when you are in most areas you will be like this game looks great and for being in post-apocalyptic settings this game has alot of really nice and just beautiful scenery.
- The story in this game is really well done and is very interesting and it keeps you playing.

Cons:
- As for problems and/or issues there really aren't any that I noticed, as that could be because I am just not as picky as some other people.
- This game took me just over 7 hours to play on medium difficultly. Which may seem short, but the non-stop action makes up for that. I will be playing on the hard difficultly and that should take me longer as I hear that on the hard difficultly that the machines aren't just harder to kill as that that there are more of them on the screen at one time, so that sounds really tough and should take longer to finsh.
- Even though the graphics are great there are still some rough spots and areas that didn't get as much attention as others. Like some of the cut-scenes are not that great looking, but the for the most part the rest of the game especially during gameplay is great.
- Another thing is the load times are slow and take awhile sometimes, so I would recommend to download this game to the harddrive as it seems to help alittle. If anyone asks this wasn't included in my overall gameplay time to complete the game.
- As for the achievements there are only 11 of them. You get one for each mission/level and there are 9 that are worth 80 points each, one for completing the game on medium difficultly which is worth 100 points, and the last one for completing the game on hard difficultly and it is worth 180 points.

Summary:
Well, like I have already said for a movie-type game this is nothing short of a great game that compares to any other shooter game.
Even though this game may be short it is still worth paying full price especially if you are as much as a Terminator fan as I am, even if you are not but atleast someone who likes shooters than rent this game.
I know that I can't wait to play this game again and again, and I will play again on the hard difficultly right after posting this.

Overall rating:
Great game - 9/10

If you have any questions please ask and I will answer as soon as I can and the best as I can.
Look here to see my gamertag that shows that I have played Terminator Salvation:
http://profile.mygamercard.net/ghstbstr "

-------------

And I've got a few questions:

-How are the reactions of the terminators when you shoot them, or death animations? Are they all the same or dynamic based on physics (i.e. any 'punch')?
-How are the special effects visuals? Explosions? The trailers have some cool motion, blur and spark/lighting effects during combat, but it's difficult to tell on these short promo trailers. Are explosions and debris damage scripted or dynamic based on hit location?
-What kind of old tech./new tech. weapons can you get your hands on and how do they feel/sound?
-How many weapons total can you hold at any given time?
-How are the on rails/chase shooting sequences, without giving any spoilers?
-How is body damage/recovery handled? I heard there are no health packs which I'm a fan of, because it seems they (devs) really stress the importance of cover and wanted to make you feel threatened by impending doom if you don't act quickly or wisely... Sounds like its got an old-school sense of gameplay what might put off newer gamers not alive in the SNES/Genesis days... can you confirm/deny this?

Well I am not really good in explaining things but I will try.
- All of the Terminators respond to each shot that they take mainly because of the impact of the ammo being used but it is the same everytime, as for 'death animations' there aren't any which to me makes sense since they are machines they don't feel anything.
- Being that the enemies are all machines you can really only hurt them in certain places to do any real damage, because otherwise shooting them anywhere else is just a waste of ammo and just like in some of the videos you have to flank them. The explosions are really nice looking and colorful, as for the special effects like the debris flying are really nice to as this game uses the NVIDIA PhysX Technology. You should watch some of the hd videos at gametrailers.com as they have some nice quality videos.
- Being in the Resistance in the fight against the machines the only weapons that are used by humans are normal real life weapons like the m4/m16, m249, shotgun(forgot name), rpg, grenade launcher, pipebombs, hand grenades. There aren't many weapons, but those few feel different and have different strenghts and weeknesses. The Terminators are the only ones that use other types of weapons like they use a minigun, and energy weapons.
- Your character can only have 2 weapons at a time like a m4/m16 and an rpg, but you also have grenades and/or pipebombs at the sametime.
- The vehicle scenes are mainly protect something, and there are some that you need to destroy things. Also you never drive anything as you are alway a shooter. Even though that may sound basic but it is really done nicely and adds more excitment to the game, and all of them are alot of fun.
- You are correct there are no health packs, and the cover system is something that needs to be done at all times because if not it is like I said in my review 'if you don't use cover and try to take on any of the Terminators with guns blazing than you will be dead before you even put a dent in the metal of one of those machines.'.

------------

I played Terminator Salvation on hard difficultly and it took me just over 9 hours to complete it. So that is atleast 2 hours longer than what medium difficultly took me.
That seems short but I think that if I started to play this game on hard difficultly it would have took me longer, because since I already played this game I knew what to expect.
No matter how short this game is it is still a really great game.

-----------

does the game have multi or does it spoil any movie plots?

No online multi-player which sucks because even though I do not like multi-player as much as single-player but to play with others online in campaign mode as Resistance members against the machines would have been awesome. This game does have offline co-op though.
I would say no because if you already know the story of Terminator from the movies than you already know the basics of the story in the game and the upcoming movie. Also this game is a prequel to the upcoming movie.

----------------------

i borrowed it from work. very mild spoilers below

pretty much complete garbage. a sloppy, lifeless gears ripoff with none of the polish.
i was very disappointed. the bulk of your time (at least in the first three levels i played) is spent shooting these annoying little flying robots that are completely boring, and annoying to shoot. when something bigger does come along, its just a matter of a basic pattern to get it to reveal its weak point.
there has been one on rails level, with you in the turret in the back of a moving truck (like in gears or RE5), that should be at least a given for any game to feed you a ton of cool scripted moments. this one did not, and instead just threw a ton more annoying little flying robots at me.

the boss i fought was pretty lame, you were in an apartment with the wall torn out, and you looked outside at a giant flying plane shooting at you. the game of course conveniently sets you up with a rocket launcher right there, so its not exactly brain surgery to figure out. couple hits and it goes down. slow, no tension, and no fun to look at.

the game just screams of overall rush and lack of polish. the graphics are not great by any means, but the odd environment detail does shine. the controls, gameplay, and overall design just feel like a crappier version of gears. the one original idea (which isnt original at all, just original in the sense that this idea is pulled from a game other than gears) is that it lifts the Wanted games system of being able to transfer between cover points while remaining protected. problem is, the detection for this is way off, and it just feels glitchy, like it will decide when it wants to actually work for you.

typical crappy licensed game. shame, really.
