|
 |
Hi
A workmate has recently bought a PS2 and has asked me about modding. Now, not having used one for ages I could not give him up to date advice, so can you lads help me out? I know there are plenty of PS2 threads but most are pretty dated now.
1.Are they soft-moddable ? Or is a chip needed?
2. If a chip is needed, which is best? and easily fitted?
3.Is there a completely free way of playing backups? (Boot disk/HD exploit etc?)
4.Is there still an online community or is it dead? (is it free?)
Any more things you think he should know please feel free to respond.
Thanks.

here's what i did: after fucking around with swap magic for a year, i got myself a network adapter and plugged a 200gb hdd in.
the only thing needed to install and run games from the hdd is a) a retail copy of hd advance b) a hdloader exploit on a memory card, but you need swap magic or a friend's chipped ps2 to install it.

Get a modchip and play every single game without issues, even DVD9 ones. The best chip is Modbo (successor of Maxtrix Infinity).

He wants to go for the HD advance option, what exactly does he need Hardware/Software wise? And is an old PS2 best or the later model?
Thanks again

old ps2: cheaper, but the network adapter is hard to find and costs 50 bucks, maybe even more. ran every damn game fine, except urban chaos 2
slim ps2: doesn't have a hdd bay, so you have to connect an external hdd via usb2 + usb advance. don't know about compatibility issues though (regarding games)

Good ole PS2..Well, I had one of the originals and got the NEO4 chip installed. Had a pro do it as it was tons of wires at very very small points. Needless to say, its prob been over 5 years since and works great. I use the network adapter + a copy of HD Advanced and have all my games on harddrive. So, I only use the chip to boot my 'backup' of HDAdvanced.
I found the network adapter at EB store in mall - used for about $30
