Quote:

FIGHT FOR FREEDOM. KILL FOR CASH.

A ruthless dictator has taken control of the tiny nation of Arulco. The country's large army has a terrified population in its iron grip, its only opposition is a ragtag bunch of rebels. The bad news: you're in charge of the rebels. The good news: some of the world's best mercenaries will fight on your side...if you can afford them. Ahead lies a savage struggle for freedom. To win, you'll need the negotiating skills of a diplomat, the strategic genius of a general, the battle tactics of a commando... And A Whole Lot Of Guts.

DEEP ROLE PLAYING
A vast new story, huge new world, many quests, plus mercenaries with unique personalities that improve with experience.

DEEP STRATEGY
Explore and conquer and entire nation. Seize and defend the mines that finance your battles.

DEEP TACTICS
Lay cover fire, aim at body parts, and travel in vehicles.

Type: Turnbased Tactical Strategy and Management Game.
Year: 1999, expansions in later years.
Website: Of course
Modding Community: You bet!
Abandonware?: No Gog sells them all, quite cheap as well and with no drm.

This is one of my favorite games, being only second to X-Com: UFO, some might say that this is better than X-Com and they'd probably be right, I just like the atmosphere better in X-Com.
That said this is an awesome game and certainly one that'll keep you glued to your seat as you manage your team of mercenaries and fight the evil queen.
Today the game has a very active modding community who are creating the 1.13 patch and mods based on that, which expands upon the original experience.
Theres also two expansions, both 'standalone'; "Unfinished Business" and "Wildfire".
If you like strategy games with deep gameplay I'd suggest checking this one out, it's definitely a Golden Oldie.

Ahhhh, I love this game so much. Still have it installed, and have it setup with the 1.13 SVN Repository and update it every couple of weeks.

This game is in my personal best games ever list, together with Diablo2, Super Mario Land and Monkey Island.

I mean, this game is great but I always tend to get my ass kicked sooner or later, I suppose I'm too stupid for tactical games like these.
Maybe I should use a guide or two Very Happy

Early on things can be a bit difficult, but once you have access to proper weaponry things get a lot easier. Usually I grab one of the more expensive mercs for one day ALONG with their gear - before they leave I move their stuff to my merc.

Also I never use a full team early on - imo you're much better off with a few mercs that are good shooters, so you can just snipe from afar and don't have to put them at risk too much at close range (1.13 made sniping way better - range is FAR greater and you actually need to use a spotter/shooter duo to get the full effect; it's awesome).

IMO the best squad based tactical strategy (X-COM series comes very close, but lacks some details). So detailed it could be called a simulator. Very Happy

And unofficial patch 1.13 really enhances all aspects of the game. I'm especially happy with improved AI. It's a great improvement over original AI.

And if you want a challenge, get Wildfire 1.13 mod. Twisted Evil
And there is also a MP mod for JA 1.13.

Here is the download page :

Yes if you get the 1.13 patch theres a ton of mods supporting it. Theres literally hundreds of hours of fun to be had.
It's a good idea to play the vanilla version first though, as the 1.13 is hard and will put you off the game if you're not used to how tactical warfare works.

Thanks for that link, Epsilon. Smile

I didn't know there are so many mods for JA 1.13.
