well, you should all pursue a PhD. It amazes me every day how weird 90% of the PhD people are. No wonder they have to stay in a uni and do research. I bet they all crash once they come outside and see the real world...
If there is one thing you are not prepared for in a uni, it is working in a company. HEll i had to do a PhD because biotech sector is dead as hell and there are no jobs out there... But a lot of those people here, they are not bad people, but they have weird future plans.
I want to get a phd, get some fancy position in a company and make some money. But when you start about companies, earning money, starting your own company, investing money in the markets, they all look so surprised like 'What the hell are you talking about?, You have to do research!!!".
It is ok for a short time, but then it is time to move on. I mean, uni is like a retired man working. Slow, no one cares, if something happens, ok, if not, also ok. Some action wouldnt hurt those people, but they are all the man in their own little world and they get funded by grants and the people assigning the grants has no clue. Thats the biggest problem. 90% of the research is unusable in the industry. This means that 90% of the courses they teach you, they only teach what they know well, is totally unusable. They call it applied research, but totally useles.
My promotor is involved in some public companies and i am working 50% for him and doing 50% research, they dont like us here. Working to earn $$$, not done...
So yeah i guess you are right about uni being useless etc, but you need a degree to proof your employer you have brains and can use them. If you dont like it, start your own business. But be aware that IT sector is flooded with ideas and is fast paced. A lot of people think they can make $$ with it because they can make a website. But the big money IT has a lot to do with math, statistics, advanced algorithms, and you need an education for that.
You can design a website now, or make some IT related stuff on a personal base and make money, but what if your clients disappear and you dont make any money? Then you will need to find an employer, and having an it related degree never hurts then. And btw if you know it already, getting the degree shouldnt be that hard, but you have an 'insurance' in case things go wrong.
I am not IT educated, but i know a lot of it. But when i applied for a job, that cv filled with it skills meant nothing. Everyone can write they know SQL or php or html and show a website. It means shit. So now i am taking some classes now and then and just go to the exams. I get a degree, easy for me. future proof insurance.

Perhaps they know that there's more to life than being a corporate slave, that life is so much bigger than just "making money". Each to his own I guess.

no, they just take an easy route to making money that comes from a tax payer.
I can also specialise in citrus flavour detection by using a special breed of flies. Does anyone care? no. Do they spend shitloads of money? yes. Do they have any competition? no.
Just an easy way of having a stressles job your life long and spending taxpayers money... I have no problem with people curing cancer or inventing new breeds of plants of even inventing some stupid machine that helps only 10 people in the world. As long as it improves society.
But there is so much useles research dollars spent on totally useles items.
You know i had lessons from people who measured the amount of noise a tree makes (fluids inside make noise) or people who measured the influene of sun through a tree on the stress response of grass. All interesting, riiiiight. Just take 1 measuremet, 10 degrees of freedom in your model and you score a 99% correlation. Publish and just relax 4 more years to apply for a new grant. That cant be the way to go... And there are some corporate yups working in my officec as well. 'early retirement' they call it themselves. And now you will say that i work in a lazy uni. Well it is the same everywhere...
