Could be: bad overclock, bad ram, bad psu, bad hdd, bad mobo. But first you should reinstall vista from a different disc just to make sure and then move on to hardware checking.

run all your hardware at stock speeds, reinstall vista , install all the updates, install the most recent drivers for everything.

from there it will be easier to troubleshoot.

Stefan F is of course right...but it is a bit of a "job" to do all that...well depends how you see things.

Personally I would suspect RAM, as to why...well I had my fare share of freezes and it always boiled down to RAM in the end.

Before you reinstall stuff, get MEMTTEST86
"Free Download" "ISO image for creating bootable CD "
Burn that image to a CD and run it at bootup. Don't forget to set your CD/DVD ROM to 1st boot device in BIOS.

It will show if you have any errors and what stick/channel etc.

Only my 2Cents Wink.

Mine Vista 64 froze every time I was starting STEAM. By updating drivers on one-by-one basis I found the problem was with Vista 64's stock NIC drivers. Updating to the latest version solved the problem.

MEMTEST86 did not find any errors. Are there any other softwares like MEMTEST86 that I can use to double check?

you can pretty much trust memtest86 so dont worry to much about the ram being duff now.. You should try to make sure your soundcard if you have one is seated and no irq conflicts though and that goes for anyother card you got on the board..

its probably driver issues now.. Or corrupt files in your vista install,, had that before where I was messing with media player files and other windows media player stuff via services control. God knows what happened but after a streamlining once of whats running on boot I had terrible issues with other various applications etc..
Worse thing was it never directly told you there were any issues, event viewer is good but sometimes can boggle your mind and you end up going around in circles. I fixed all mine by reinstall OS and board drivers again... Since then no troubles touch wood....

What's the difference between Memtest86 and Memtest86+?

Run Memtest86 or memtest 86+ (seems a furtherdevelopment of memtest86 by geeks), like this:

Only test one RAM stick at a time, and in the slot closest to the CPU (slot 1).

Let it run for 10 passes, then take that stick out - put the next stick in and repeat.

Of course, we don't want to see ANY errors at all.

Errors that won't pop up while testing with all sticks installed - can reveal themselves when testing 1 stick at a time (this also helps to identify which stick is bad much easier).

I'd say it's driver related.

Vista used to lockup here every few days or whenever I manually did a Windows Update. Cut a long story short, I ditched my pos wireless Belkin dongle and replaced it - problem gone.

I've seen random stalls (where it just does nothing for a few seconds, but recovers later) on HP systems, the solution was to stop the Virtual Disk Service.

My hp laptop just started acting up and causing Vista 64 to freeze. Turns out i have one of the lovely "bad Nvidia" graphics chips. (The chip gets so hot it melts the solder). Fortunately i have an extended warranty, but it's still a pain sending it back. I'm waiting to see what the warranty company does, as i really don't want them to "fix" the chip..since it will just happen again..I'd rather have a different chip put in it's place (unlikely) or just be given my money back to buy a different laptop. We'll see.
