no one should be surprised, Bioware has clearly abandoned multiplayer, which is a total shame since all the R&D they put into NWN is clearly wasted. Kotor, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, none are multiplayer games (and i have not bought or played any of these titles).
as near as i can tell, if you went to the store to buy one of these games NWN diamond would probably cost the most (at least on Amazon), and is the only one the DRM has been removed from.
just 2 cents i wanted to add, and no i wont be buying Dragon Age or any game without co-op or multiplayer. |
NWN aged so well because of its huge modability and not because of its multiplayer. Its got good mp, but what they expected of it was to compete with diablo and other early mp games in terms of number of players. And in that it failed misserably, mp players could be counted in hundreds, sp players were dissapointed of its campaign, so only thing that made it popular were mods.

lol yea i know. its a real shame too. i just dont like bioware's current business model. and the drm doesnt excite me either. i really wanted mass effect to offer mp/co-op but its not there. id rather be playing mass effect 5 years from now with expansions and patches, than i would like playing mass effect 5. are they working on mass effect 2, and what does this mean for mass effect since i understand they are supposed to sell content for it.
and its the exact same concept that, to me, made Bioshock such a complete disgrace.
anyways, i hope Dragon Age is unique and enjoyable but it just bugs me, lol.

Well they recently announced they're working on a new batch of DLC for ME. That's not bad for a game over a year old now.
(read; The Xbox 360 edition was released worldwide in November 2007)
ME2 is due out in 2010 and you can apparently, according to Bioware, carry over your savegame and profile.

sad, considering EA's track record with DRM, this will prob be another one of those great titles I won't buy.

It looks pretty good so far (looking like a 3D update to Baldur's Gate) -- I just hope they optimise a little more, as that framerate sure as hell didn't look very smooth.

I hate to ask but is this game getting dumbed down for consoles or what, only 4 races and 6 classes to choose from, no gnomes, rangers, bards, paladins, clerics, sorcerers etc. seems to be a bit short with classes, like 30 classes short.

This is not a dungeons and dragons game.

It's Bioware's own game system. Not a D&D mechanic game. They said they felt restricted before by having to stick with the D&D rules and wanted to make something of their own.

Apparently this is going to be their best game to date, I don't remember Bioware ever hyping up a game to this degree without good reason. This is by far my most expected RPG this year. They'll open the info floodgate within a month, so we'll see enough quite soon I guess.

Very smart decision. Most of normal people (not D&D fanatics), including me, are sick and tired of D&D RPGs.

Oh, well still a couple of more classes and races wouldn't hurt I mean if they went for 'everything new' approach how come we still have elves and dwares they could have/ should have made new races up as well.

What does their current business model (bought by EA) have to do with their vintage classic super-RPG's???? The KOTOR-games are awesome and you're doing yourself a disservice to skip them. They're nothing like Baldur or NWN btw.

Oh and to further clarify on one point; expecting the game to have MP/Co-Op is just silly, IMO. Not every game "to ever ever be made ever ever ever!!!11" can be a multiplayer title. Jade Empire, KoTOR 1/2 and Mass Effect are two of the finest examples of super-RPGs (nice coinage, Frant!) I've ever played - and they're designed to be SP experiences.

Adding MP can also completely screw up SP. These days focus is mainly on MP, which means SP doesn't get all the attention it needs. I'd much rather have an RPG purely focused on SP than an RPG which tries to give both but fails.
As for the 'lack' of races/classes, I see no problems. It's enough. Bioware's games have never been about dozens of classes/skills and endless customizing, storytelling and gameplay have always been much more important to them

^ Absolutely agreed on both points.
I'd rather have a dedicated MP RPG, or a dedicated SP RPG. Trying to mix both only *sometimes* works .. with the majority of the time one components gets more of a preferential treatment over the over.
As far as the class system goes; I *love* D&D but that doesn't mean I want every RPG to have 64 classes and multi-classes -- I just want something deep and engaging, but without losing the fun aspect. From what little I've seen, Dragon Age looks like it's going to be great.

The problem I'm starting to realize in most video games is that they can only give 50% effort to make MP and SP enjoyable for the user. This is a RPG, and Bioware is known for their awesome SP exp. so I could care less about MP if they are going to put their all into the SP.
