Nexus - The Jupiter Incident
Not that recent, but still looks beautiful, and is one of the best space tactics/strategy game out there. It has a bit steep learning curve, but if you are willing, you are in for a treat.

Props on Nexus; absolutely nothing better for space tactical.
I get the feeling the op is looking for more 4x type gameplay though.. sadly none come to immediate mind.
I'll put out the default Homeworld 2 though; its purely RTS however. (hell is not even recent, but sure doesn't look old)

It might not be exactly what you were asking for but Reunion is in the ballpark atleast.
I suggest you check it out (it's abandonware). It's a dosgame so you need dosbox or something like that.

It's a good game, one of the first games i had on cd, It's not a cd-rom game but i got it on a burned disc when i installed a multimedia kit into my PC (Dx4 486 100mhz 8mb ram 512mb hdd). Got it from the guy who installed it. It had a alot of sweet games and stuff (from the time, win95 was brand new at the time).
Anyways for me it's partly nostalgia but i genuinely think it's a good game. It's a tad short but thats never really bothered me.
PS! a multimedia kit was/is: a cd-rom, a soundcard, speakers and some apps/games.

Sins is probably about the best choice you have for space strategy. only issue i have with it is the Impulse crap for patches (and yes i own the game) and that the game has a tendency to drag on.
Hegemonia, Conquest: Frontier Wars, and ORB are some other titles id recommend looking into.
and you gotta at least try EVE online at some point.

Sword of the Stars with the 2 addons.
It's light on the world micro-management but excels in the ship building and combat.

They are not recent but the Homeworld games are iconic for this genre.
8 out of 10 dentists prefer zipfero to competing brands(fraich3 and Mutantius)!

+1 to Hegemonia I really liked that game
+1 to Nexus - The Jupiter Incident as well. If I recalled correctly this game was much more tactical and if I recall correctly there wasn't any planet management or building of new ships either. So losing a ship and its appoint officers meant they were gone forever. This is the type of game I prefer because you actually have to care about your units and try to avoid causalities.

The commanders didnt die if I remember right and you get a new ship with basic equipment

Its been a long time since I played it so you may be right. Perhaps there was a chance of them dying but it wasn't 100%? Can anyone here remember?

Alien Legacy is pure awesomeness, definitely one of my favorite games despite its age.
Homeworld 1 is also excellent, and truely unique, as is the stand-alone expansion pack. Homeworld 2 is decent, but doesn't quite reach the level of the first one.
As for some more 4x'ish games, the Space Empires and Master of Orion games are my favorites.

Imperium Galactica I + II are great 4x games.
I'm still hoping for a true third part (Nexus was supposed to be IG III before it was renamed and transformed into a tactical game).

I'm still amazed that in the good old days games had 2mb and they had better gameplay than the ones we have today with several GB of data.

thats because back then game developers cared, now they just follow their absolute orders from the publisher.

i would give another game, a pretty decent game: Star Wars Empire at War + Forces of Corruption. can't say it can compete with HW2 and Nexus which are my favourite space-rts game, but this game is still pretty good.
or you could just try Spore and advance to space age. awesome
and i must say, i am glad there are other Nexus players around here. really liked the game. quite good gameplay, but i bit boring story. anyway, i am still playing it from time to time!
EDIT: if you're interested in skirmish or have a few friends, try playing Star Trek Armada 2 but only if it's modded. i would recommend Fleet Operation mod

I save time and hassle with DOSBox by using D-Fend Reloaded. It's an awesome front-end for DOXbox and makes configuring games, including CD-mounting, a breeze.

I wouldn't link to that directly, mate. You'll get in shit with the mods (there's NO such thing as "abandonware" - it's still illegal warez) *chuckles* Why do you think I didn't link to it?
