It's clearly adapted for U.S. audiences.

They will never put every single words..now that I think about whenever I watched movie back in Poland..you could hear in background voices in English and then Polish voices...instead of translatating whole sentence...they just put few words that almost have same minion

yeah its a pretty shitty movie
i heard so much about it and i know the swedish movies aint up to par with hollywood whatever but the movie was crap
kid having a hard time leading to etc etcetc

They are getting the old subs back for all future dvd's produced.

I loved the movie but I won't convince the unconvinced etc...
I'll just say this about the American DVD translation... FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!
It's a travesty. They've ruined the movie by removing tone, mood and meaning to the scenes.
Last example on that page, with Håkan saying "Eli..." before pouring acid in his face out of pure despair, a suicide attempt, and the uttering of the name Eli to display his love as well as regret that he failed and can no longer do what he does...
American DVD Translation: "I'm trapped".... WTF???!!!?
It's like Beavis and Butthead was put on subtitle-duty. I'd like to smack the translator with a sledge hammer.

Subtitles still get the story through. Scenes don't change. Sure the tone slightly changes. It's not dark and grim. But with new subtitles you still get the idea that she's a vampire.
 Spoiler: | the new kid falls in love with her. the guardian fell in love w/ her eons ago. she's lonley. he's lonely. the world sucks. and they just try to fit in and find someone like them. |
other things are left out. doesn't matter. it's not a vampire story. it's a love story. regardless of how they write it, it'll still be a love story. may not be as dark, or as grim, but the story still carries. and the shots and the visuals are strong regardless. Even through the fucked up subtitles, you still get the essance of it. I don't see what's the big deal. It's a good movie. Even with shitty subtitles, you still understand what's going on. And the delivery is brilliant.

Imagine "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" replaced with "Dude, I smell gasoline".
or "To be, or not to be" replaced with "Uh, here's a skull".
In a movie where there's so little dialogue, and when there IS dialogue it's used to evoke an emotion or insight, correct subtitling is crucial to avoid turning it into a spectacle. Oh well, each to his own.
