so like i've never touched a stand-alone gps unit (only onboard ones), but i'm gonna have to buy one soon.
i've read from many places that TomTom is the leader and should be the best in comfort.
also, afaik you have to buy new maps for it, right? what about new soft?
looking at here:
http://nfodb.com/search.php?query=tomtom
what the hell would i have to download? what's that: TomTom Navigator v7.910.9185 Multilanguage PPC WM5 WM6?
anyway, anyone familiar with gps units here?
yes

I use Tom Tom on my windows mobile, it runs great and I love the extra voices your can get, like mr T etc..
Btw
PPC = Pocket PC
WM5 = Windows mobile 5
WM6 = Windows mobile 6
So just get the version your gps os is running.

I prefer iGo on my WM6.1. It has that nice 3D navigation which is pretty nice.

garmin should be more expensive than tomtom units? also, does garmin calculate a new route if you miss one spot? as i'm driving around unknown cities, its a must feature for me. also, how are the maps' accuracy? does it warn for speed cameras and such? some more expensive tomtom unit does it

My Garmin 720 (I think its the 720) recalculates on the fly, and the maps are very accurate. I have used mine all through Europe, the USA and Canada.
I have found that the garmin units are far better than the tom toms. IMO anyways.
Mine can add camera and traffic support quite easily. The traffic support requires another antenna and a subscription AFAIK.
