The hl2install.exe in Cd5 does not work for 90% of users. It just pops up a black window for a second, then nothing happens.

Is there someone who knows a REAL FIX for it?

It would be much appreciated.

It does work..
Delete everything on your harddrive to do with HL2

Then reinstall it with cd1 and make a steam account when it asks for cd key just close it down.. then run the hl2install.exe from Cd5

I have the same problem, a window pops up and nothing seems to happen. When I click on half life 2 shortcut on desktop nothing happens...

And I have tried the CD Version Upgrade as well - same problem.

Edit: It seems that after a while the steam update window appears but it says in the info that no steam update or account is needed to play that version of the game Sad

Can anyone help?

Okay, just tried with having the desktop shortcuts unselected - I still get the shortcuts though...

However, this time I started msdos window in win98se and then selected hl2install.exe and it starts with the gcf files but then gives the following error:

Failed to open GCF archive: "C:\Programme\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\User\dource materials.gcf", make sure its available and decrypted.

And it still doesn't work - after I click on the shortcut I get the steam updating window but since I have no internet connection that doesn't wirk. But I get the impression I need to update steam before I can play the game. ..

Any help?

Have just tried it on a PC with internet connection: It works, but only with the CD Upgrade Version, not the original crack on cd5. I tried it both with selecting desktop shortcuts and without.

So Internet is needed to update steam, even though an account is not needed and steam not really either...

But how then can I get this game to run without an internet connection? So many peeps here had problems but nobobdy posted a solution Sad

Install one of the updates and the game will be in offline mode. Now it should work without steam and internet connection.

Update the steam to the latest version, before you crack the game .And use Half-Life.2.CDVersion.Upgrade-VENGEANCE to crack for the best.

I seem to have found a solution: I had to reinstall PC and this time installed WinXP Professional.

Then reinstalled HL2 and it worked with the CD Upgrade Version Crack by Vengeance! And PC has NO internet connection...

So it seems to have been win98se together with no internet connection which gave me that error message.
