Working for the government and you have no crisis fear Very Happy

Im doing a PhD and have a 2 year contract and an option for another 2 years (research grant). Working my ass off (50h+/week) but i can work wherever and whenever i want, no boss who is pushing me all the time, no fixed hours... And a very good paycheck for a starter job Very Happy

My classmates got slaughtered in the job market... Biotechnologists and they graduated in 2k8... Try to find a research job in this conditions, good luck. More than 50% are still looking for a job and the other 50% is doing a PhD because they couldnt find another job.

It sucks indeed. I do not understand why those politicians are screaming everything is ok and things are changing? I hear it from everyone that has a job in IT, chemistry, steel industry, car industry, dairy industry: orders have not shrinked a bit, it was an abrupt -50 -60 -70 -80%, just like the car sales in USA. And we all know, going down, faster than going up...

It's the same everywhere with government jobs. And when you try to shrink the bureaucracy they are all screaming and protesting. And when everyone in the industry is getting their salaries reduced and laid off they won't budge for even 5%. Sometimes I wish we would suspend democracy for 1 year and get done all the things we can't solve through democratic process.

That is true. I disagree with the MickeyDee's part, but there are jobs available just a lot of people don't want those that are.
Like maintenance man or janitor or something. Just something so you have money coming in till something better opens up in your field.

For instance, Dodge laid off a lot of people at a huge plant in my city. Most of the those people were making $25+ /h with full benefits and 3 weeks vacation.
Now they are looking for similar jobs and don't want to take a lower paying job or a job without 100% benefits.
And most people that work at Dodge aren't skilled (not all, but most). They run automated machines and shit like that
I had a buddy who worked there 3 years ago and all he did was sit in a chair and press a button ALL DAY and he make 27.50/h and had full benefits.

But I agree....plenty of jobs out there if your qualified for whatever field you work in or are willing to take a job in another field and maybe a little pay cut.
Cuz while your working that "shit" job, you can still apply for jobs in your field that give you the money and what not you want.

And the reason I say MickeyDee's jobs suck is because they suck in the US. I dunno what min wage is in the US but if I recall correctly, its like 5 or 6 bucks an hour.
In Canada however, its gunna be 9 dollars an hour within the next few months and 10 dollars an hour next year. Thats fine while your looking for another job im.

Hell, construction companies are ALWAYS looking for people along with a few other industries...besides the fast food industry.
Personally, i would never work in fast food....I hate dealing with people and having to smile and be nice and shit....especially when you deal with an asshole customer.
I did retail sales once and never will do anything involving customer service or dealing with the public again.

Thats why I like my job. I deal with the designers, owner, my assistant and 2 other people.
Most of the time its a "Hello" in the morning and I don't talk all day (aside from lunches and breaks) except to my assistant/lead hand and me and him are like friends.
Customer service/dealing with the public....I don't have the temperament for it all.

But thats the problem with the US. So many Americans have unrealistic expectations. They all dream of being rich and what not. A lot of them don't want to be comfortable...they all want some fancy sounding job or to be rich.
It's part of American culture. And I'm not bashing Americans, I like Americans. Some of the friendliest people in the world imo.
Just their media has messed their heads and thinking up.
Like the mortgage crisis......buying a half million dollar home while making 15/h.....beyond idiotic. But thats also the Gov's fault...more specifically, Bush's fault. His complete deregulation of the financial sector and what not had a hand in this.
But its a common US mentality (and I've heard this on many American news programs and what not)....everyone has to be better than the "Jones'" or at least have what they have.
And thats largely do to the media...all media, not one specific form.

Anyway, I could go on but then you guys will jump on my back.

Suffice to say Mchart, I agree bud.

I think some of you have unrealistic expectations about the labour market. Especially in N.America when there is barely any kind of retraining program for when you become unemployed (at least nationally, but maybe some halfass programs provincially). New housing construction has fallen drastically, so really, they're not hiring. Even shitty nowhere service jobs are cutting back.

Imagine as well ... you lose your job, you have a house, wife, kids etc and you were making $50K a year. Are you going to go on benefits (EI here it's a good % of your salary decreasing over time) or work at mcdonalds for $9 an hour?

That is exactly what my economics teacher is saying for past couple of weeks... I can not remember details since, I usually sleep in that class but he told us that many people send resumes to practically every company of hoping of getting hired even if theirs experience is totally unrelated

EDIT : Should have stay in school, dropping out have its consenquences plus in mcdonalds here in NY you get 7.15$ after taxes its like 6$

having bachelors/masters or even assiociate degree always pays off

Of course you go on EI before you resort to working at McDonald's. But EI doesn't last forever.
When your EI runs out and you still don't have a job, working at McDonald's is fine while you continue to look for better work you know dude?

By the way, Ontario has a retraining program. And as I believe, its free.
I think it's called "Second Career", "Second Chance", "Second Opportunity" or something like that.

My dad is currently doing it. He's told old and cause of his injuries, he can't do physical labour.
So while he's in school, I'm paying their bills and my brother chips in what he can (he's got a wife and 3 kids so ya know).
They had to re-mortgage their house during the 90 recession and are 2 years from having it paid off. They were gunna re-mortgage it again but I couldn't let them do that. They'd be paying it off for another 10 years and my dad is 7 years away from retirement. They have a lot of money to live off of when they hit 65 (can't touch it till they hit 65...I know its a ton of cash). But if they re-mortgage, they are gunna have to use some of their savings to pay off the mortgage and I can't let that happen. My dad needs to enjoy his retirement.
So I figured I'd pay all his bills except the cable bill (he's collecting EI as he was only laid of sometime last month). So he can pay for his cable.
But his car payments, mortgage, gas, hydro etc I pay for and I give them 100 bucks a week for groceries.
That way they can still save money and not have to be stressed out. Stress for my dad isn't good at all. My stupid cunt mother gives him enough.
And I have it set up so the money goes to a special account I opened thats in my dads name and automatically pays all the bills (except cable).
That way my mom can't get her grubby little hands on it.

Sorry, in a talkative move bud Smile

If someone is working their ass off and is still not able to make ends meet. (And when I say make ends meet, and I mean not being able to afford a house, and food. I see 'poor' people complain about being poor yet they have a fucking cell phone.) Then they have the right to bitch.

However, if I see someone bitching about not having a job - They are just fucking lazy. End of story. My McDonalds statement was a general low-level statement. There are plenty of jobs available that are even better then McDonalds. The problem with this country is that people are just to fucking lazy. Only a small portion of the population actually gives a fuck anymore.

And FYI, minimum wage in most states is $7 a hour right now. Some states are even less.

A cellphone costs you almost nothing to have.
You can have one for $1/month (some even free) (and thats with calls/sms included).

I agree with you man. People complain about being poor but like you said, have cellies and other accessories that they wouldn't be able to afford if they were really poor.

And your right, Americans (not all of course) are getting so lazy.
I recently saw this topic on a 60 Minutes type show. Most American's think they should be handed money and what not and not have to work and save for things.
And thats directly the media's fault.

Do you watch Real Time with Bill Maher? You'd love him as he says the same things you and I say and agree with but he says it to people on the flip side of the coin (and usually they are "important" people ie Mayors, Professors, Business Owners, News People/Journalist's etc).
Real Time is on tonight on HBO at 10pm.
If you don't have HBO, you can download the show around 11:30pm-12am EST. Usually on the net by then.
Real Time is my fav....panel show. None of the BS Fox, CNBC, MSNBC, CNN etc have.
Bill tells it like it is.
You'd like him.
