Relative.. i do find everything to be overrated as far as official reviews go. They are whores paid to deliver good ratings. Thats what they live from. If they would create brutal and honest reviews, they would not get big titles pre-release to review and that would reduce their popularity. So as far as 'ratings' go, i dont give a fuck. Check user reviews, filter out the extremely positive and extremely negative ones, and you will get a good idea of how good/bad the game is.

Ai is much improved over previous games and if you don't try to mess comps mind with a lot of flanking and cannons and provided that he has good army it can be challenging. On normal difficulty that is, on higher difficulties his units just gains a lot of extra morale and definitely also some strength upgrades.
|
True, it still has some of the usual TW AI flaws, like standing like a tree in the middle of a field when he is being bombarded by artillery and stuff like that, but generally it feels a lot more challengeing. It does nice flanking moves as well, so better keep those artillery pieces protected

Now bigger problems are game balance and online. Balance is fucked. Light infantry is completely useless, its not even worth having them around. They have on average half the heavy inf numbers, no good upgrades and are even bad in ranged fire. Even those of them that have good range bonus are easily overpowered. Line infantry and Guards with line firing ability kills them with ease and when you gain platoon firing its even worse.
|
I beg to differ here. If you think of them as some king of sniper unit a'la red alert, which is supposed to obliterate the enemy, then you are simply using them the wrong way.
Light infantry usually have a good 10 units or more range advantage over the regular line infantry. Some units have extreme long ranges, like 100+ instead of the standard 70, but most only have like 80 or so. They are fast, and they do have a skirmish mode, although disabled by default. They are useful for:
- drawing units away from the main force of the enemy, forcing them to break up their formation
- killing generals, although cavalry are a natural enemy of light infantry units, given proper scenery with enough fences for cover, it can be deadly.
- Mopping up routed enemy infantry
- Whatever else i didnt think of and you come up with.
They are only half the size of a line infantry unit, so if you allow them to be fired upon, you are screwed. If you only used them as harassment however, like fire a salvo then retreat (skirmish), then they can be of use. No, they will not win the battles, but they might make winning somewhat easier.

Sorry to hear that it crashes for you Newty I'll try to explain one last time but in better detail.
Firstly these are files from the retail version which is used to update Razors release of this title.
Installation is just the standard for Razor's release (I choose to unpack the files manually with Simpack but the installer might work just fine.)
Following a successful installation you apply these modified files over it and replace those files that already exist (Shouldn't be many aside from the EXE)
You then optionally but recommended to get the complete sound system apply the fixed Sound_Fx.pack file downloaded from somewhere (TPB or the above RS links for example.)
Lastly you apply Razors EXE file from their crack but don't use any other files.
Game will start and work as intended if done correctly and if you have the requisite redists installed. (DirectX 2008 November build being the latest available and the VC++ 2005 to 2005 SP1 and 2008 to 2008 SP1 redists, four files for x86/32-bit or eight files for x64/64-bit as it also uses the 32-bit files.)

cheers for the info JBeckman. i had been playing for a good few hours and it ran fine. i installed properly and everything, its just these files seem to make my game load slower after clicking the .exe, and then when clicking continue campaign it stalls on the loading screen.
Just tried again, just to be sure, and yeah still wont work. Backed up the original files this time though.
Ryzen 5 5600, ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II, Corsair Vengeance RGB RT 32GB 3600MHz C16, MSI RTX 5070 Ti Ventus 3X OC , Corsair RMx Series RM750x. AOC AGON AG324UX - 4K 144Hz 1ms

I've found they are good for ambushes, particularly if you are defending and able to deploy troop emplacements like trenches. Positioned correctly to support the main army they can mop up routing enemy, or catch them off guard from behind depending on what sort of cover is available. They can be lethal if used properly but they aren't going to repel any advances, its best if you can spare a melee unit to defend them.

Only good thing that I see in them is counter for dragoons and other ranged cavalry. For everything else they are too poor. They can't even beat simple militia inf in ranged and in hand to hand combat. I guess they could be used on flanks, but even there its better to have a good unit of line infantry. As it is now, they are just too expensive for what they bring to the battlefield.

If 1v1 skirmishes are the only available MP mode right now, this game sucks.

I've been playing 2v2 skirmishes and there's settings higher than that. There's not a lot of variety or options on offer but there's a pre-planned patch for multiplayer so that's sort of understandable.

Thats great to hear. Some people in the steam forums claim only 1v1 is available.

I forgot; the sieges are 1v1. That's what they are complaining about. Land skirmishes are up to 4v4 if I'm not mistaken.

After a fresh installation, the insertion of these files, the retail sounds pack and the cracked .exe, these are the properties of my Empire Total War folder:
Size: 14.8 GB (15,933,407,293 bytes)
Size on disk: 14.8 GB (15,935,823,872 bytes)
Contents: 954 files, 79 folders
Is this correct?

How can one country support to spout units continuously when they own a single region (Georgia, Courland)? Would love a fog of war cheat just to see how much army everyone's got... Spain massed like 5 full armies in one region near Madrid. Great Britain has like 20 fleets in the English channel. Unbalanced...

Usually programmers let computers cheat when their lack of ability to do credible A.I. is too obvious. But I can tell you how I do it with one region: I begin by not spending a lot, and save up a lot of money. I don't let the computer mismanage by spending huge sums on crap, and build up a war-budget. When I then decide I want to expand and go to war I have a hefty sum which I then concentrate on building and maintaining armies with, and during the war times my finances always lead to spending more than gaining. But after I expand, losses + new territories income start to balance things out.
Also, the only research I do in the beginning is to get income. Money = power, then I start making demands for technology.

Ridiculous. Great Britain gets all sorts of special infantry units, plus their infantry is much better than average too. You can tell CA is from England, they're overpowered as shit. Historically accurate, their infantry wasn't anything special compared to other European powers.

Where then you should put them? Far on flanks so they are cavalry fodder? Attacking cannons? Well cavalry do that job much better.
And no they aren't deadly, at least aganst half decent human opponent they arent. Their kills are always 30-60 at most, while normal infantry get 100-120 with ease. Only good low number infantry are Grenadiers, but there is nothing light about them. They are able to decimate Guard inf.
