Yes it was broken, but it was replaced with working patch on official update website ages ago. He probably kept the old broken patch.

Trust me, I've tried every combination of cumulative and incremental patches suggested (and everybody that doesn't have the problem has their own theory about what everybody who does needs to do to get it to work) but the problem remains; all of the 2.34 patches do a hash check first, and all report changed files and abort. If you know of a 2.34 patch that doesn't do an md5 check, send a link my way please.

The official site is full of pissed off people that actually bought the game with the exact same problem, and despite the ridiculous steps listed to fix it, the issue remains.

Thanks guys, but like I said, I've tried every single patch they have and it's the same thing (files have been changed, patch aborting, meh).

Since Ascaron has no clue what's causing this or how to fix it, I don't understand why they just don't remove the stupid hash check for 2.34. None of the other patches have it, why does this one need it?

Well you must be doing something very wrong, because the patch was fixed a long time ago. Did you actually reinstall the game and used the patch from the link I gave?

Yes, I've uninstalled/reinstalled several times, rebooted after each patch install, used Ascaron's removal tool, used reg cleaners, etc. I've done it all. You do realize lots of people (who actually bought the game) have the same problem right?

Well, as far as I know .. they *had* the same problem. Ascaron fixed the patch ages ago :-\

I bought the game just before Christmas. I downloaded the full 1.34 patch direct from Ascaron. Installed. Works fine.

What do you mean after each patch install? It's just ONE patch. Seriously you are doing something wrong...

No, what I'm saying is, on their official forum, there are countless posts from countless people suggesting everything from the all in one patch (yes I tried it, it doesn't work) to every other combination of incremental patches. Nothing works. I've tried installing in XP x86, Vista x64 and even Windows 7 7000 x64. There's some unkown combination of hardware/software that I, and all the other people who can't get this thing to work have that the patch just isn't compatible with. I don't get how you can think I'm installing a patch wrong...lol

PhysX patch later today it seems, coupled with the already strenous games it'll really hit performance.

Sweet Jesus on a pogo-stick! >_<

Quote:

Ascaron's Chris Grunwald had told us that at least a GTX 280 would be required to run all features with best texture quality. Furthermore even fast quad-core CPUs were said to be too weak for the Physx effects and even the Ageia PPU would be overburdend since data would have to be transferred from the RAM to the PPU and from there to the CPU - a problem of the available bandwidth.

Matching Grunwald's forecast our Core i7 running at 3.5 GHz never reached more than 10 fps. If we cast a particle intensive spell, the framerate even drops to 3 fps and recovers slowly only.

Can also use the games update utility. Smile
(Connected to a NVIDIA server but the speeds were great.)

Oh and at least the 2.34 - 2.40 update doesn't check files anymore before patching, unsure about the full update though.

Nice little update though as was mentioned the added "debris" from those PhysX enhancements really hit performance.

One thing before I update; can I DISABLE the new nVidia-buttfuck stuff or if I patch do I have to suffer horrid performance on anything other than a Quad-GTX280 system? Sad

But you have ATI, don't you? Gonna wait for someone with Nvidia to comment on performance and improvements with Physx enabled.

Ah yeah you're right Glottis I should have mentioned that I run it via a AGEIA card and those are somewhat outdated, still it's nowhere near as bad as it is if you were to try to run the PhysX enhancements via your CPU as that resulted in single digit frames.

Developers did recommend a GTX 280 for it though so I guess a dedicated 9600 or somesuch would give best results and leave the primary card to handle the graphics.

I have 60fps stable now, so hopefully with PhysX on it won't drop below 30 in heavy action (assuming we ever get a crack for this patch).

A game in creation before 2008, yet suddenly patches induced saying you must have one of the highest end cards to carry on with it? Strange shit.. Im betting its more an oversighted foul up of a hashed job via the engine used, trying to squeeze a few more pennies of its title out of the hardware fanboi's...

Seriously though doesnt anyone view this patch and its "physix" stuff a bit insane for this game?

Id understand if it was something newly in the planning stage.. but its like flight simulator X and its shoddy coding released for the future of hardware etc.. I can only imagine S2 is also supposedly aimed at glorious play for those that are willing to wait till they have upgraded a few mnths or more down the line..

And no Glottis before you pipe in Smile I am most happy with my 4870, and will have also a new gtx back from evga germany soon..

Performance difference will mainly depend on how much physics stuff there is in the current scene, there's quite a difference with it enabled even early in the game though (Started over, for some reason this patch allowed my character to begin in Gold difficulty.)

All those pebbles react to effects like kicking them when going trough and I have about 40 FPS in that location where I took that screenshot but with all ingame options maxed and 4x Edge Detect AA (12x Samples) and Adaptive AA (Foliage and such, not much in the above scene though.) so I probably wouldn't have hit 60 even without PhysX due to how demanding AA is with such a configuration though. (Still playable however.)

Of course these pebbles aren't much of a difficulty even for the aging AGEIA card but the additional particles later on might prove much different. (Especially large amount of particles such as the new spells provide, those'll probably be the most demanding effects.)

Hope that makes sense, not the best explanation.

EDIT: Game itself is more optimized for NVIDIA though so results are most likely different on a GPU like the 9xxx series and up.
(The AGEIA card and a 9600 are about evenly matched in various comparisons though at the moment the AGEIA card does a bit more due to NVIDIA not fully implementing all availalbe PhysX effects as hardware accelerated, unsure exactly how many there are but around 3 out of 5 or so.)

EDIT:

(Bit more demanding but still around 30 - 35 FPS, gonna have to alter AA a bit to free up resource usage a bit.)

If you're using HR textures and high settings, the game's already stressing enough. Add to that the physics and a highend card is perfectly plausible.

"Pause Functionality" --> FINALLY!

In V2.40 there is no trial period. So, real securom remove is needed.

Damn, looks like there will be no quick loader type crack.
