Is it an action RPG (like the tales series) ?

nah Lost Odyssey is pretty old school JRPG, turn based battles and everything.
I also very much enjoyed it... only problem I had with it was those damn kids.. I hate em!

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-dw-49-en-70-37k1.html

Play Asia quotes the 'asia' version as ntsc/j but Australia is sometimes listed as 'Asia' and is a PAL region.

I'll run it through Mulleteer and post the bad news when I can.
This whole region-lock issue is starting to seriously piss me off.

Wow this game has waaay too much fighting Sad I can dodge around most of the guys but narrow cooridors filled with monsters is pretty anoying after awhile. Especially with all the backtracking. If combat wasn't so awesome I'd probably be more pissed about that.

So far, 10 hours in...got to the Cardianon mothership...still on disc 1. I was getting kind of worried this game would be short because I'm hearing people have beaten it already? It's not so bad though. Lots of cutscenes too. I suppose if you can't stand the VA that will be a problem for you, but I'm personally having a blast. Some really funny PA's too Very Happy Make sure you're constantly moving around the ship during a warp or you'll miss some hilarious events!

Haven't played this much SO since SO2, and that one got dull on me so we'll see how long before I toss this one aside for something else lol! Loving it so far though!

Its an AWESOME game, one of the best next-gen rpg's ever.
The game world is vast with outstanding areas of beauty, imagine PSO but with far superior graphics, plot, characters, creation system; wait in fac tfar superior EVERYTHING to PSO.

All in all the best of the new breed.

I couldn't possibly agree more. This game, so far, is the best example of a JRPG on any next-gen console. I'd personally go so far as to say this is the best game that Square-Enix has published since Dragon Quest VIII.

I'm obsessed with completing every side quest, exploring everything, and talking to every NPC, so I can't be used as a real measure of how long the game is, but I can say that 18 hours in I'm still on the first disc -- not bad at all.

What?! I am disgusted that the reviewer would imply anyone would mute Welch!!! Welch makes the game a 10/10! And the dig that the VA is bad is laughable. It's possibly a bit over the top, but the VA really brings out each character's personality. Oh well. The VA is probably the main reason why I love this game, so I'm a bit dissapointed others don't share the same view. I do agree, given the option I'd switch to the original japanese audio and go with subtitles. What would the reviewer have preferred in the VA though? If everyone was just deadpan and monotonous? Or just phoned in their lines?

Exactly, sometimes I don't understand complaints about VA at all. From what I saw in videos VA is great in this game, yet many are saying it's bad. But they never explain what's so bad about it.

Oh my god... I just popped this game in and though it is old-school, what a game! You didn't even mention the soundtrack!!! I dont think I have ever heard a soundtrack that was as well written and sounded as good. Using real orchestras for game music should be fucking mandatory. I think this might be the first game soundtrack that I have ever wanted to buy. Thanks to those who recommended this game as well as the others. I got a full plate!

I think that the VA is alright in this game, but occasionally Welch does make me want to go on a stabbing spree. It's not that I'm entirely anti-Welch, but just that sometimes it gets so squeaky that it goes beyond what I think is acceptable for a professional voice actor.

Further, I believe that Lymle (the little girl) is probably saying some cutesy desu crap at the end of her sentences, in a very "dattebayo" kind of way, and the translators made the painfully retarded decision of trying to make that work in the English voicing. The end result of this is an annoying "'kay" at the end each of her sentences, which frankly seems out of place and grows annoying fairly rapidly. Take it from me, by the 900th time you hear some little kid say "That feels really good... 'KAY~!!!" you will feel like muting the game. Basically, versatile a language as English may be, some things just can't be translated - or at least, shouldn't be.

However, aside from my mercilessly tearing into the game, I think that most of the voice acting is solid. I'd give the VA a 7/10.

I'm still waiting for the youtube SFX mixes where it's nothing but battle grunts and groans followed up by Lymle's level up VA.

As a parent I disagree with you. I think the 'kay really adds to her 6 year old charm (yes, I realise she's more like 15 in a 6 year old body). I can see how it's anoying, but I can assure you I've been around kids far and away more anoying than her. That, and having a 5 year old I've become accustomed to tuning certain shit out.

I do understand what you're saying, but something about the way that Lymle says it just... it sounds so fake and affected. I'd personally think that someone with a child would feel that way more. When I'm just reading it, it seems fine, but the way that she says it just comes out so badly. At least, from my perspective.

I can certainly agree with that. One of the things that I'm not sure was intentional or not, was that occasionally she will show more emotion while in other cituations she remains completely stoic. I much prefer the monotonous Lymle because it suits her character more (I'm led to believe that around age 6 she had used a symbol to open a doorway to a world filled with darkness and in order to save herself she completely sealed most of herself away, leaving her the way she is now). I can't see myself muting her though because those good VA times certainly outweigh the bad ones. I'd have to say, she probably one of my favorites in the cast, after Welch of course Wink Meracle is a close 3rd, but she's waaaaay to hyperactive for me. The fork, knife and bib she occasionally wears around Sarah is hilarious though!

Forget Welsh what about Lymie? She needs a good stabbing with a blunt blackberry.

KAY??

I'll give you "Kay" [stab stab]

Seriously though:

Apart from that terrible dubbing it's an AWESOME rpg, but I wish they would go Level 5 direction for voice.

Fixed.

Fucking bullshit, really. There's absolutely NO fucking reason why PAL territories should have to wait while NTSC and JAP get it months ahead of time. I honestly thought we were passed the whole "US gets it now, UK gets it in a year" bullshit.

Guess not.

So far I'm loving it. Combat has me hooked and is really similar to previous titles.

Only thing I dislike is how obnoxiously bright everything is. HDR/Bloom overload.
