first up, shameless plug for the movie '9' - http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=51909 its had bugger all views given that its going to be one of the top 5 movies of 2009 goddammit, go check it out if you love animation, postapocalyptic/fantasy/surreal/action/adventure type movies... i just cant believe theres so little notice of the film here (judging by view count) - come on, give it a look!!

** and now our feature presentation ** . cue the music.

Given that its almost march, it seems the perfect time to see what everyones fav and most hated films of last year were - try to just list films that were recent and you FIRST saw last year (so 2007 films are fine as well) - you dont have to list them in order unless you want too.

in order:

1. wall.e
2. the sword of the stranger
3. mutant chronicles
4. speed racer
5. iron man

5. meet the spartans
4. starship troopers 3: marauder
3. alone in the dark 2
2. seed
1. tripping the rift: the movie

yes i listed mutant chronicles, bite me, but i loved the old-timey low budget retro sci-fi feel of it. acting was shoddy, effects were.. actually kinda pleasing to me, they werent realistic but combined with the overall effect of the design, they worked wonderfully... i guess to me, atmosphere, attitude and the 'feel' of it, go a long way: loved that movie. Razz

My 8/10+ List (can't really pick a top 5)
The Wrestler
Gran Torino
Curious Case of Benjamin Button
In Bruges
The Dark Knight
Iron Man
Hellboy 2
Tropic Thunder
JCVD
Pineapple Express
The Good, the Bad, the Weird

My 1/10 List
Meet the Spartans
The Happening

... looking at everyone else's list, I guess I didn't bother watching most of the crap from 2008. There is nothing I can think of nearly as bad as these two pieces of shit.

heh, exactly. there's usually enough info around, about any given movie, to be able to make sure you'll like everything you watch.

though i got burned at least once, last year. with harold and kumar 2. what a huge disappointment. they jumped from the silly, light hearted stoner humor of the first part to mean-spirited, unfunny trash. had to stop the movie half way through to decide whether it's worth watching only for finding out if they manage to stoop any lower. i watched it all, and yes, they did manage to outdo my expectations about pushing the crap limit. i even remember waiting 'til i had some decent weed to go with the movie Neutral

Saw it and loved it, yeah. Tho it got a lot of extra points from me because of its sheer attitude & gore. Plus First Blood is one of my all-time favorite action movies since I first saw it as a kid - was great how Stallone used the same theme music in both movies.

So from a purely objective standpoint, maybe as a movie it wasn't all that great, but it worked for me.

rambo was great. i alternated between laughing and trying not to cheer in the cinema throughout the whole movie. stallone was as cool as ever, the killings were satisfying and there was a max of 5 minutes of talking. what else do you want? i loved it.

Well saying you watch bad movies should always be taken with a pinch of salt. Rambo was terrible, imo.

Didn't include movies from 2007, or this list would be a lot longer...

In no particular order...

Best:
The Dark Knight
Gomorra
In Bruges
Man on Wire
4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days

- Didn't make the list, but also great: Happy-Go-Lucky, Tropa de Elite
- Haven't yet seen (among others, so they might have made the list): Disgrace, I've Loved You So Long, Baader Meinhof Complex, The Class, The Wrestler, Waltz With Bashir, Synecdoche New York
- Seen so many movies this year, I probably forgot a bunch of movies. 2008 was a great year in movies.

Worst:
Blindness
Doomsday
Appalloosa
The Happening
Wanted

Equally crappy: 21, Garden Party, The Strangers

I guess I skipped a lot of crap, looking at the lists above there are movies you couldn't even pay me to watch.

If Rambo was a bad action movie, what is a good action movie in your opinion?

First Blood was good, Die hard I, Iron Man and so on.

I like that you bring in the word action to the discussion, which isn't really relevant. It's about whether movie was good or not, which, imo, it's not. Just saying that the statement "i dont watch bad movies" is like saying "I only eat tasty food".

First Blood was not an action movie, it was a war drama. Saying it was an action movie shows why the series went to such shit after the first. But the last one was fantastic, it was very effective at showing how awful war is, and how cynical and hypocritical people can be.

It is relevant because you should keep in mind what a movie tries to achieve when you discuss it. Saying that a movie is bad because you don't value the director's/writer's intentions is not fair.
Rambo did not try to win any academy awards, it was an war-action movie stripped to it's core without anything to distract from the brutality of it. It did not try to please everybody like for example Die Hard 4 (Bruce Willis for the old-school action fans, hacker plot for the younger generation, PG-13 rating for kids,...) but was targeted at a specific audience and it did bloody well.

Tropa de Elite technically came out in 2007 Razz

But yeah ... given the time it takes for something with a limited theatrical release to finally hit BluRay ... sometimes you end up a year behind.

I'm eagerly waiting for Waltz With Bashir (Mar 30), The Class , Baader Meinhof (Mar 12) and (now that it won an academy award) Departures to come out on BluRay. Two have definite release dates, and I'm sure the other two should follow shortly.

Yeah I know, but that was only limited to film festivals and a few odd cinemas in Brazil. It didn't get distributed for cinemas worldwide until 2008. Which is why I listed it Wink

I go to the cinemas whenever I can, especially to film festivals. But it costs money and time, it's a hazzle to travel to the cinema when all you want to really do is chill out after work Wink

even "limited" stuff comes out here in regular theatres (when you see NY/LA releases that usually means TO as well) ... but to see some stuff at the Toronto Internation Film Festival costs like ~$40 a ticket (paid that for The Good, The Bad, The Weird this year, and about the same for Pan's Labyrinth the year before).

Given the top notch presentation of BR now, I'm always pretty much going to wait for most stuff until then.

actually you'd be surprised, movies that only play in a few theatres in NY/LA also play in TO (usually a specific theatre, usually this one) and nowhere else in the world for an initial theatrical run Smile
