This game sucks when it comes to playing not at home. You need to install a plugin, then you need to make sure there's the latest Java version on the computer (not to mention Java part of the website is slow as shit on a older PC), then you need to make sure ports aren't blocked in any way, then you need to play preperation match every time on each different PC. Just too many annoyances to make it a good "play from anywhere" game. And playing this game at home is pointless, there are better games to play when at home.

Have an alternative? As inconvenient as it may seem, it is the most easy to install and use from everywhere MP shooter I know.

Yes, copying over Q3A or Q2DM or CS 1.6 from usb drive with all the settings intact and so on takes a min.

That requires anticipation! In these you just need the pc and the connection.

Nope, you need a pretty good PC because Java part of the website dies on older PC (even thou game runs fine), you also need the latest version of Java, and ports can't be blocked or it won't work at all. Oh yeah and that queue.
This is even more of anticipation than just copying from a USB drive with no queues, no javas, no websites BS. Not to mention if you copy over from USB you can then share the game on LAN easily and then play with others.

Well that is what we used to do, bring UT1 or Q3A on USB, and play. We all agree the is easier. Also, Java doesn't require that strong PC, because it runs fine in our Uni PCs.

wtf you're talking about, you don't need java at all...
Glottis wrote: | then you need to make sure ports aren't blocked in any way |
wow, imagine that, online game that needs some ports to be open to function, never seen that before.

I'm pretty sure that's not the case. Maybe a bug because it's still a beta or if you hadn't finished the tutorial properly before.

Even when you get to the front you still have to wait ages for an e-mail to validate your details.

Gotta say I'm admired by id's stupidity. You prepare for an open beta, and what did you expect? 3 players? Of course there will be a flood of people. How can they not prepare for the load ffs.

if you read the interview, you'd know that they are deliberatley keeping costs and technology low as to prevent any severe finical headaches. nobody at id knows if this model works yet.

well it was a nice little experiment, but honestly, i dont get what the big deal is?
i mean, if you tell me that you could just pop on a pc anywhere, and log into ur account, and be playing quake in a matter of minutes, THEN the hype would be worth it... but thats not the case.. you have to wait for the game to install itself on ur pc (over 100 mb) and for what... an old game with a snazzy but ultimately irrelivant web component that keeps track of ur scores...
ive got tf2, and id much rather play that. great server finding capabilities, it keeps track of my stats, achievements, and friends... yeah, i just dont get it i guess, apart from the irrelivant bs its no different than installing q3 and jumping on a server.
*yawn* *delete* *goes off to play tf2*

What hype? And what's there to get it, maybe some people want to play something that's actually competitive and requires skill unlike noobfest TF2 yawn.

the important part is that id now has a 3d game engine in your web browser. they're considering licensing it off if everything goes well. imagine how awesome that would be. if it can do 2d equally well, flash would be out of the game for, err, gaming on the web.

Stupidity would have been iD not implementing a system that Queues people, and instead had no such system in place thus crashing their servers.
You really need to think before you speak. |
Just to remind you, the queues were added as a last resort, after the servers were hammered to death.
You need to check your facts straight before telling telling others to think.
