Finally a true sequel to Soldiers HOWWII. That faces of war game was shit but I guess it was a good learning experience for them. This game has the CoH look and feel with Soldiers gameplay, great combination.

Voice acting is killing any sense of immersion in this game.

I liked Faces of War much much more. This one has such stupid AI it makes me want to break my keyboard. Artillery not firing at tanks in range, infantry not taking cover or not throwing grenades at tanks in range. Also nothing pisses you off more than when you are using your medium tank and start firing at a enemy light tank and the bastard either misses or does only light damage. Then light tank shoots you once and destroys your tank.

I liked Soldiers HOWWII and Faces of war more since it was more commando style. Your got 5 soldiers at the start and needed to wipe out the whole map. Here most missions is defending an objective.

Nope, everything is working fine 'so far'

@ devi-lee,
I mostly use direct control for tank battles, especially for distance shots.
precise aiming for weak spots..
Maybe u got a bad hit, and the light tank got u on a spot like the ass?

I havent really played the campaign though (this editor got me hooked!), only 1,5 mission so I dont know about these ai bugs, gonna play thru right now.

Nope always front hits. It's that you need to aim very carefully since aiming at the gun, turret or frontal armor has different penetration values. The problem arrises when there is a full assault on your troops and you can't manually control several tanks. So while you are driving one, others get destroyed since usualy enemy forces are overwhelming and there is always a large luck factor involved.

I didn't play MOW yet but in the previous games you were able to shoot at the tanks tower base and destroy it with one shot too.

Well I'm just playing skirmishes in the editor myself, like most people the low-quality voice acting and scripted nature of the main missions just isn't as compelling as playing around in the sandbox.

In this time though I can't say I've seen any of the issues you described. In fact if anything the propensity with which infantry uses grenades on tanks (assuming they have any left) is such that you have to be very careful when approaching any urban areas enemy infantry can be disguised within. Otherwise; kablamoo!

Armour penetration values will be tweaked by modders no doubt - but make sure you have AP ammo loaded when engaging armour. Sounds silly but it does happen that HE can be loaded without you knowing (it happened to me). I haven't had any bad experiences with medium/heavy vs light tanks though.

The original Soldiers was, but Faces of War was just like this.

I agree, the missions in this are too large-scale. I want a squad of 3-4 soldiers, nothing more. Also, is it just me or is it pretty much impossible to hijack armored vehicles? In the first russian mission, I stole an AT gun from the germans, shot an AP shell into a half-track and damaged it's hull. There's noone in it anymore, but for some reason, I can't get inside, I can only tell my guys to attack it.

I still prefer this to FoW though, because of the realism. It's also a bit more polished.

The thing with tank battles, is you really have to keep track of range. Try to remember how much armor a specific calibre can penetrate at a specific range. Also make sure you don't hit an enemy at an angle, always hit him head on. And, when fighting a tank with a fixed gun, always take out one of the tracks first.

Devi-Lee, which medium tank were you using against which light tank?

You mean the turret? I just tried it out in the editor with an M4. The German panzer (I forget which but it had noticeably higher armour ratings) destroyed the M4 turrets rotational ability, and in doing so about 2 or 3 of the crew came out of the tank on fire. Ordering them back in the tank was still operational and had a tiny fraction of swivel on the main gun which could still fire. So it was far from dead.

I noticed that too. I'm going to test that in the editor next as I wonder whether it's some scripting on the enemy unit by mission creators which makes them unable to be captured. I'm not sure. Confused

It's the second german mission where you get swarmed by english light tanks and you get to call in reinforcements of medium tanks.

I'm enjoying this a lot. I do agree that Soldiers was more intense and the rpg-elements (inventory carries over to next mission etc) played a bigger part since u only controlled a small force.

However this is fun, loads of nice missions and I really like how the map gets gradually revealed as you progress the mission.

As for the whole thing with capturing enemy tanks and vehicles I've found that blowing off the tracks doesnt do anything, however destroying the turret or in some cases the main gun will force the enemies out and you are the free to commandeer it, after a few repairs ofc.

And yeah the voice acting is terrible to say the least but I am actually quite impressed with the missions, scripted yes but most of them are very nicely laid out and you really get to use proper tactics. Others are cool even though they are just protect-this-coordinate from bumrushing tanks. Simple but intense.

And you've got to love how a "clean" map looks like, well, a battlefield after an hour. Craters, bodies, burnt out wrecks, fallen trees and demolished buildings.

Considering I was in total love with Soldiers but more or less disliked Faces this is a great achievement in my book.

You can repair a tank if it's not too far gone. This was the same in both HOWWII and FOW. Usually if the engine is destroyed or the hull the tank is only good for scrap.

If an item on the picture of the vehicle in the lower left is black then that piece of the vehicle cant be repaired.

In my personal opinion the fact that you control so many units at the same time is a bit of a bummer, just look at the second mission in the campaign (only played in COOP). Soldiers was much better in that respect. Having only a few guys and having to take out lots of infantry and tanks with them was an insane rush when things turned bad.

I find the voice acting hillarious especially the bit where Alexei talks about having to help the resistance guys "I cant run away like a coward". When the actor pronounces the word "coward" it sounds like he says "cupboard". So thats our new name for him. Very Happy

Is anyone else missing the bazookas and panzerfausts who were also present in HOWWII and FOW? Are they even included in the game? All I've found so far is anti tank grenades.

I have seen them in mp. Maybe it's because the missions start early in the war. But they are in the game.

i liked the game mechanics and physics of HOWWII.. but it did have a feeling of commandos which i didnt really like as games like that seem like puzzles rather than strategy games. I think that is the problem when you only control a few men in the game.

I prefer it when you have a lot more to control then it feels like a strategy game

MoW as mush larger scale combat compared to Soldiers. Personally i hate those infiltration stealth missions types in RTS or FPS a like
