Do you have hardware physics enabled? If so, have you visited a physics intensive area?
BTW, optimization in this game is pure crap. It only uses one core, and people "wonder" why it runs so slow without PhysX hardware missing. nVidia BS to teh top! They probably said "oh wait, so with a dual core machine people get an acceptable performance!? NOOOOOO!!1 Use only one core or our BS cover is blown!!1"

From what I've read PhysX was never "threaded" probably because it was first designed to run on a single unit - the AGEIA PPU - and then via NVIDIA CUDA via the GPU so it was never that good on a CPU, plus the PPU chip could do those specific physics calculations much better than a CPU and would thus always be much faster with NVIDIA's GPU based CUDA method slowly improving. (The 9600 is about on par with the AGEIA card and higher cards doesn't show much of a benefit unless you use it for both the game visuals and physics.)
Main performance problem for ATI is due to drivers and how this game has DX10 coded, perhaps shader based due to that graphical corruption that's displayed on ATI cards.
(Obviously physX do affect performance but I guess it's offloaded a bit by disabling it's hardware acceleration features.)

Well, on DX9 with hardware acceleration, it runs fairly well on 1650x1080 with everything on max. But I'm only at the beginning. Also, JB, do you know what is being missed with physics hardware acceleration off?

Hardware physics (For this game.) affects three things, particles such as dust or ice, water impacts and splashes on objects and finally cloth such as moving banners, whether this effect is reduced or partially disabled when hardware physics is disabled I don't know, might be worth checking as it's pretty easy. (Take down the console and write "Map Benchmark" without the quote marks to load a test level.)
There's also ragdoll effects on bodies and objects but I don't think it's affected by hardware physics and always run via CPU mode (Software.) as it's a pretty "light" effect compared to heavier stuff such as the particles (Mirrors Edge glass effect can be used as a good example here.)

Are the 4.0 Sm artifacts present on Ati cards in the english version?

there are also stalactites that fall when you turn some heat on. they fall and break in a lot of smaller pieces on the floor, but it's not that big of a deal. not sure if this is affected by physx or not, though.

It's nearly the same code so the artifacts are still present unless the game is running in windowed mode and that'll further impact performance, looks pretty good though albeit character models aren't all that detailed.
(At least the onces I've encounter so far, that guy with the torches looked pretty good and your own character is pretty detailed as well but only seen during a small cutscene early in the game.)

Well, I don't know, the installation installed some PhysX driver (I think it was 8.XX) and it worked from the first time here.

I'm a bit underwhelmed to be honest. Will the game change or is it the same, ie. walk slowly into new rooms, press buttons, fight a "monster" or two (they aren't even the slightest scary), save a soul, then do it all over again?

Absolutely the same from beginning till end. Despite its repetitiveness the game almost made me fall asleep a couple of times. Sluggish game.

Shame... I'm only at the start, but now that I'm hearing it's the same, I might not play it much? The atmosphere is fantastic, and I loved how you walk to someone's body and see their story.

Well... it´s not my type of game. I like action fps, not penumbra-like games -no matter how good they´re.

Cryostasis is pretty good man , just play until you get some real firepower except the crappy melee weapons .

Where you have 20-30 fps constantly with no option for more? Really appealing!
