The thing that made hl2 boring for me is that it had repetitive game play in various environments. There were some moments of silence here and there where no gun shot was heard and no trigger was pulled. And those were great.

But even though the game is great and the graphics are above average it is still boring. You don't have a wide array of weaponry. First 4 hours into the game and you have all possible weapons that you may carry.

Repetitiveness reeks in this game. I mean what the fuck? You see an area and you'll know what will happen. You see a turret, second you touch the 'trigger' you will have to use that turret. No matter what. Going in with a pistol in hand will just get you killed. YOU MUST USE THE TURRET!

You see a stack of rocket launchers, you will have to use them. Everything on a level has been placed specifically for you to beat the game. There are no obstacles or any no road blocks for that matter. NOTHING! Fuck even if you were retarded (no offense to those who are) you could beat this game. Unlike Riddick, doom3, cod, cod expansion fuck even painkiller requires some thought.

Repetitive may suck to all of you. (main reason why all of you hated doom 3) But a game needs to be challenging to have some sort of fucking replay value. Half life 2 is easy!
“oh then don’t play on an easy mode” – all of you will say!

I played the game from easy to hard; there be no smarter soldiers, no greater difficulty. Your weapon power is just lowered as well as your shield. The weapon strength and the accuracy of the enemy might have been improved as the skill setting tab was moved up. But that’s it! First time around this game is the best. Second time around it doesn’t hold it’s spot to the games like halo, doom 3, rainbow six series, and fuck even painkiller.

Graphics and game play make the game. And when game play lacks the certain je ne sais quois all you are left with is a one hit wonder. It’s like watching matrix reloaded + revolutions. First time you are marveled at all the eye candy, the sound effects, and the battle scenes. Fuck even the directing might give you a fucking woody. But watch it the second time… ho ho ho it’s like watching Ben Affleck performing Shakespeare.

What a great post Smile I particularly liked the part about Ben Affleck and Shakespeare - he he he.

I bought the bastard 3 weeks ago and have only managed a few hours play - my big complaint after 3 hours is - where the hells is the friggin’ story? Please - how can games that make millions of dollars only focus on the technical attributes when surely in today’s market gamers want a little more than pretty graphics and nice new physics.

I could have come up with better, more understandable story than this. I mean I played half life 1 and I’m currently 2-3 hours into Hl2 and I’m not sure where I am and what I’m doing...it is just plain poor.

First Far Cry then this – That is why it is boring – what’s the point of having a Porsche if the engine is stuffed. This game is stuck in first gear for mine.

Cheers

Speed

I am relieved to see it's not only me who thinks HL2 is boring. For me was way too linear (like first part, but standards have changed since 1998 or 99) and a lot of time I was feeling like it was a shooter on rails. Levels were small also, but this was very cleverly concealed (they seem to be big, but in fact give you a very little freedom). Overall I really enjoyed FarCry more... I also think it had better graphics than HL2, which I didn't even finish. I liked, however, those dreaded phisics puzzles and grav gun - for me it was only imaginative element in this good (but not great) game.

i even believe HL1 (still today) to be superior .... the first time i went through HL2 i had a cold and thought that was the reason i didn't enjoy that much, but the 2nd run through yesterday while in splendid health made me see the emporer really was naked... this game is just not enjoyable, there is no fun

Main reason for this game being boring are the weapons, and especially the machineguns. They both felt flawed, dont remember their model names but lets name them the smaller standard and the the bigger one. The smaller models accuracy was absolutely horrible. At times I felt like I was playing an rpg game, pulling the trigger and waiting to hit someone. This didnt improve if you knelt either, making the small machinegun useless. The bigger one was a lot better, but whats up with it only being able to carry 2 extra shelfs and maximum 30 round a shelf? Felt like you had to reload everytime you killed an enemy. The bullets also felt abit like the boring childish bullets from Halo, colorfull yes, but missplaced in a game made for adults. Throughout I sometimes felt HL2 lacked abit gritt and dirtieness.
I loved the standard gun at the beggining, wish you could've used it at the latter stages of the game. The magnum pistol was also very nice, the brute force of that "canon" made it my favorite one to use. The shotgun was fun to use only when facing antlions, which gave alittle Starship Troopers feeling to the game, and killing zombies etc.
Ravenholm also dragged the game down abit, took me ages to finish it.

Interesting read, at least the intelligent replies made by people with motivations. Unfortunately it seems only those with negative reviews about HL2 have them though.

Why don't you HL2 fanboys (that's what I'll have to assume you are when all you seem capable of doing is flaming the users posting anything negative about the game) write something constructive instead of just making those useless posts? There must be something good about the game if you're such huge fans. Just writing "hl2 = not boring" or "fuck dem niggas hatin on half life 2" doesn't do much for this discussion or this forum.

And for the record I didn't care much for HL2 for reasons already posted (especially the post made by Injurious, a great read even for you fanboys).

Hopefully this post can be taken as constructive criticism since that's what I intended it to be.

boring/not so boring

Bought the game => supported Valve as*holes and they stupid online verification etc = this game is total shit when it comes to starting the game...takes ages, doing those "file checks", "updates" = sometimes it updates and after i check - nothing be updated..only took you few mins to wait again before you can PLAY... So the biggest fault of this game (as a 1 that bought the game) is that stupid STEAM thing...knew it but still was more pain in the a*s thing than I thought...should just dl the files and not bought the dvd (wanted it as a dvdbox...bad idea..).

Back to the game: Still not finished it (and I bought it same day it was released). I just had enough about all those LONG driving maps... Shooting the enemies is easy, AI=idiot. Game had/has nice bugs... Would thouhgt after those years they made this game such a bugs would be fixed BEFORE they released the game!? But no....

Game is nice way to waste your time but really wasn't what I waited. Worth of money? No...as I hate CS so even valid cd-key is kind of useless to me Very Happy

No steam, less bugs, better AI, less driving, no online check (tho ppl say you can play it without net conn..nm to me but every time i start the game it do "something") and better mp - then it would be just great game - now just other "nice" fps that cost me almost 50 euros Very Happy

it starts very boring and it'll get better and better to the end. i've often heard that nova prospekt is boring. but the whole thing with the bugs and bugbaits is pure genious gameplay. the only scene in the game which I found very annoying was to setup the turrets for the, I think, second time. Man this was tough.

The MP-7 is a sub-machine gun, do you know the difference between a machine gun and a sub-machine gun? A sub-machine gun is a weapon designed for clearing rooms mostly, for urban warfare, they have a small calibur to reduce the recoil, as SMGs shoot very fast, due to the small calibur and the high fire rate every SMG has poor range and poor/mediocre accuracy. Don't blame the tools, they do what they are made for, you can't take an MP-7 to a large field battle. the MP-7 is inaccurate yeah, but that's realistic, in real life it's also inaccurate, it doesn't get more accurate when you kneel or when you go prone it's just the way the gun was designed, would you have liked it better if the bullets all flew in a straight line, hitting everything you point your crosshair at? For me that would be gay and boring. I didn't use the MP-7 that much either but i love the fact that it's realstic, even though it's poor outdoors, that's the way it is. That bigger AR or MG doesn't exist i don't have any comment on that. And i also love the HK USP MATCH, my fav weapon in the game.

You guys just amaze me...Half Life2 is one of a hell gaming experience. Yes, sometimes there are quiet moments with no shooting at all - so what, who says you have to shoot all the time. and if that's your style, grab Doom3, or Serious Sam...
Half Life2 is an amazing achievment for Valve - and should not be missed by anyone.

Now that's cynical.

As for the game, I'd say HL2 is one the most varied FPS I've ever played,
every level feels like its been carefully and cleverly crafted, alternating between pure
action and puzzle-solving phases (maybe a bit too easy - I agree),
which is quite enjoyable if you ask me.

I've never been bored throughout the game, and Im surprised such a poll exists.
On the other hand, I think the game's too easy, specially compared to FarCry,
which was more challenging (also damn irritating at times :d).

Lol, I only wish they'd implement some realism in the game. But for a somewhat futuristic game you'd think they'd be able to construct sub-machineguns with a little better accuracy. and no, I hate games where you point and click the trigger and kill everyone, but even burst firing sucks donkey balls.
I'm not talking about taking down people from 1000 m away in hard wind or anything. Even in smaller areas the sub-machinegun is way to inaccurate...

I have to say that I dont know what you guys expect from a game. The gfx were really quite good, the whole engine rocked. Its also the first game thats combined so many elements such as driving, shooting etc with good effect. As for replayability I have to say that I have NEVER enjoyed playing ANY game the second time around. HL2 is a great game IMO one of the best this year.
Yes its not perfect but FFS Doom3 was just boring mindless shooting IMO.
Now yes Riddick is bloody awesome!!!!!
