I was thinking of overclocking my 6800GT using the Nvidia driver AutoOvercloking feature.
Did anyone tried that?
how is it perfomace wise and is it safe?
Thanks

do you void your warranty if you use that feature? I would only try it if nvidia says it's within their user agreement, and why do you have to overclock a 6800GT? My 9500Pro runs all recent games nicely (without overclocking) Smile

I doubt a 9500pro will run high detailed games at good fps (50-70). Just try the Zombie mod for HL2. It will lagg like ass. Try Doom 3 at high settings too. It's not fun playing at low on everything even if the fps is good.

Well i did play Doom 3 with 1024x768 resolution on medium detail level and i got around 35 fps, i couldn't see a difference between high and medium, it's too dark anyway. As for HL2, i have tried that and had no lags at all, i used the preconfigured settings at 1024x768. And NFSU2 was running great at high settings on the same resolution.
There is no midrange alternative from ati at the moment as i have an agp system and the x700 series is only available for pcie :/

What's the point in running stock if you can run it faster? Smile
You wont damage it unless you go totally overboard with the overclock.
So dude, overclock that baby!

ok, what sort of increasments should I make to my Geforce 4 Ti 4200... Do you increase at something like 15mhz a time untill it starts going dodgy? ?

Depends what ti4200 you have.
Some ti4200's can easily go to ti4600 speeds (some can go way past that too) on both memory and core.
Try like 10mhz at a time and run something that pushes the gpu like mad and if it finish without any problems you can push more untill you see graphical errors (happens when memory is pushed too hard) or the game/demo seems to hang (happens when the gpu is pushed too hard).

First you need to write down the original values!

I have a Geforce Ti 4200 with AGP8x (128MB)

standard settings are 225 core, 444 memory

I can set it to 250/500 and no problems at all, can go higher but I don't wanna burn my card Razz

you just have to try, if you're getting artifacts then you need to turn the values down a bit Smile

No need to write down any values. Just push "default" and it will go back to the default stock settings.

By the way, you have a very poor ti4200 card lenselijer. Smile
500 on the memory is a really lousy overclock for a ti4200, and 250 on the core isn't good either, I hope you didn't pay much for that when you bought it Wink

If it's a good one it can be overclocked like mad Hitman02.
A REALLY good ti card can reach close to 700 on the memory and around 320-340 on the core , but then you need a REALLY good one. The earlie albatron ti4200's did over 700 on the memory and something like 340 on the core.

Try 10mhz at a time Hitman02, if it fucks up just move down 5mhz and try again, do this untill you find the max for both core and memory.

is it true that the computer will lock up before before the card is damaged?? (As long as you dont go silly and set the speed to 1000mhz)..???

Like if I increase it by 10mhz each time untill the computer locks up / becomes unstable and drop back 5 mhz that would be safe wouldnt it??

And if the Card starts getting too hot, wont teh game slow right down before the card dies?? Razz

my old pc's showed me a bluescreen if i overclocked the cpu, ram and gfx too much. But you also have to consider that the cards lifetime could shorten. So even if pallebrun thinks that "What's the point in running stock if you can run it faster?" i still see no point in overclocking these days. Wink Just to get 2 or 3 fps more is simply not worth it, at least for me. But i am risk-averse anyway Wink

If you just overclock your graphics card, you usually see pixel errors on your screen. So just increase the clock speed untill you see these errors.

You wont shorten the life time of the card. The only time you will shorten the life is when you go overboard, if you keep it within the limits of what the memory and the gpu can take then it wont be a problem at all. My own ti4200 for example comes stock at 250/550. It's using high quality memory that is rated at 600mhz so obviously I can push it to 600 and with good cooling some more. Not all ti4200 can go this high obviously, but every card have memory rated higher than what the stock is and the same with the gpu. Smile
