Looking for a DVD reader only (not writer). I already have a Pioneer DVR-112D and writes fine. However, sometimes reading scratched discs causes issues. I have several slots open in my case and can fit another dvd reader. I also want one to eliminate swapping discs with one reader and writer.

Looking for something cheap but good. Thanks.

*Maybe I should just get a blueray reader (even though I dont need it) and dvd/hd burner combo. Ive seem some around $100 from LG and Pioneer.

I need a better reader. Ive come across discs that are scratched any my pioneer does not read it. However, if I try another driver - it will read it ok. So, yeah - that Lite-on Blue Ray/DVD Reader only looks great. Thanks for the info..Ill go with that for reading only..

i got some old pioneer DL-RW and lite-on combo drives
so far pioneer failed to read only one disk which wasn't even scratched
other than that pioneer reads all kinda scratchad and cheap ass media

could be laser itself on your drive that is not very good quality wise, but they are so cheap atm in fact not even worth a discussion

I've run into dvds that were unreadable on my dvd drive (burner) but readable on someone else's drive (burner as well) and vice-versa so I guess it has to do with how 'sensitive' the drive is to errors. Buying a read-only drive is no guarantee that it will read those dvds any better. You could also try some of those software progs which promise that they can read scratched discs.

I use ImgBurn - and ignoring all read errors so it continues making a full dump of the disc. I know this method can cause just loss of data that is not being read, but so far the stuff Ive copied works. I rather just get a better drive (reader) to make sure it grabs it all.

You keep repeating "reader" as if it makes any difference. In fact I can't even think of a single Reader-only drive, and even if you find one there's nothing supporting your view that a Reader is better at reading scratched discs than a Writer since it all depends on the internal hardware calibration of the laser which isn't "special" for readers.
