If you really, really, really need to get yr hands on the new Nintendo DS (and you, uh, didn’t already get one sent to you last week like we did), starting at midnight tonight EB Games will be the first ones officially selling the new portable game console. Big emphasis on the “officially’, as we’ve heard a few sporadic reports of people walking into stores and finding sympathetic employees willing to help them get their hands on a DS a few days early. Most stores should have them in stock already, so you might just want to try your luck. Otherwise, get in line.

I got freaked out by the new game screens of ds.
i used to think it had the same graphics as psp, that means at the level of present gen consoles, but no, it hardly reaches psx graphics, the most games look like shit, add to that the fact that the 2nd screen is only used for pointless menus, lol this is going to flop majorly, the 3d engine sucks and considering 2d games, well gba already has nice 2d. so basically the ds is nothing more than nintendo's answer to the n-gage, same crappy graphics, same crappy display size, the psp is gonna kick its ass to the moon.

Sorry man, but the PSP is 350 bucks and the batterys only last 3 hours. I agree, the DS is stupid, but the PSP is not going to sell with a price tag of 350. I can buy all 3 consoles for that kind of money.

And what makes the DS stupid?
Can I get a straight answer or are you going to give us some ignorant babble?

For one, using the pen on the touch screen to look around in games is awkward as hell. The DS is just going to be a PDA that plays games, also the games don't look any better than the GBA. Think of it this way, one finger on the direction pad, one on the shoulder button to fire, and one hand holding the pen to look around.

the only thing thats gonna make the PSP sell is cos its made by Sony and got PSP probably written on it - something all the sony fanyboys will jump around with joy.
4 hours gameplay, wanna watch video's,dvds on the move then be prepared to buy another SONY exclusive format even if you already own the standard dvd (whoopie makes the PSP rather redundent), moving parts that'll break as soon as its dropped unless you atach it to your belt via the chain (mmmm groovy]
apart from that its ok, but it'll sell bucket loads cos sony fans are all brainwashed

Have you seen the thumb piece? It replaces the use of the pen for gaming. Pretty smart move I'd say, everyone was scared about using the pen in a game (like Metroid).
I suggest you check it out. Or, if you just don't care, that's cool too.

I picked it up purely based on my love of Mario 64 and the premise of Wario Ware with a touch screen (if you haven't played the original GBA version you're really missing out)
I like it a lot. From what I understand the main reason they didn't go with an analogue stick was because of the lower durability of them. I don't know about you guys but the controllers for my GC, PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, even the Saturn all became much less effective (or even died) within 1-2 years of the first use.
The touch screen control works really well with Mario 64 when using the thumb strap, it takes some getting used to, but after 30 minutes or so it felt like second nature. The d-pad works pretty well too if the touch screen isn't your thing. Also, Mario 64x4 has a ton of really fun mini-games, which makes me drool over the Wario Ware possibilities once again.
The most exciting aspect is the Metroid demo included with the system. Using the thumb strap, the game feels eerily similar to a PC FPS because of the degree of accuracy you have. Awesome stuff and I can't wait to see what's done with it.
I'll probably pick up a PSP if they release any remakes of the PS1 Final Fantasy's (7,8,9) or if there are any other blockbuster releases for it. For now though I'm very satisfied with my DS purchase.
Hopefully with the wifi connectivity someone manages a way to exploit the system and enable homebrew content to be streamed over a wireless network, somewhat akin to the way the GC was hacked with PSO. With homebrew people working on it (and maybe a blank cartridge with a menu driven interface) I can imagine web browsers, video players or lots of other cool stuff being possible. No doubt someone's already trying to get Linux put on it.

A friend borrowed my camera and I won't get it back until later this afternoon, will post 1 or 2 pics sometime tonight. Haven't posted much at these forums, can they handle [img] tags or the something similar or will I just have to link?

Nevermind, I didn't bother clicking the actual post reply button, now I see it won't be a problem. Not sure what you're time zones are like but I'll probably post them in 4-6 hours from now depending on what happens.

jonels, im in the uk and im looking into getting hold of a US unit but the demand is incredible at the moment. The best import retailers, www.lik-sang.com and www.playasia.com wont be shipping new orders for a while so your best bet is ebay my friend. Try and find a seller in the uk with stock to avoid import VAT from USA, just be prepared to pay over the odds, good luck.
