I think for the dual 4850 you will need 800W. But you can always try if everything works and see if you can stay with that one. What 600W PSU do you have?

A little over a $1000 USD right now. Leo its a Cooler Master RP-600PCAR. Yeah but alot cheaper than the last upgrade. QX6700, MSI 975 Platinum PowerUp Ed., 2GB Kingston KHX6400D2LL RAM, power supply, case, 2 SATA 250GB HD, Plextor SATA DVD burner and a EVGA 8800GTS 640MB. was over $2000 USD. I call it a bargain to get another video card and 4 cores Hyper Threaded.

I say you should look around for a better one. You could probably operate the system on it however it will be maxing out the juice on the 12v. That means that the 70% efficiency(at typical load) will degrade even more at running at peak and it will be bleeding watts as well as stressing its internal components. And since it is a coolermaster I wouldnt put my trust in it not overloading and taking some of your valuable components with it.

You should be fine with anything in the 650w-750w range, provided it is by a top-tier manufacturer like Antec, Corsair(my current fave), Enermax, ect. If you plan on upgrading to higher-end video cards in near future maybe you should go past 800w, but efficiency should be more important than looking at brute wattage or you are just burning electricity for the hell of it.

And at around 100usd I don't think a new psu is a Major investment of any sorts. However it is a wise one.

It will work.
Shouldn`t be a problem.

@upstart_69

lets say you burn ~5% more energy under full load with this 600 W PSU. So how many hours till your investment in a new PSU pays out?!
How much energy costs the production of one PSU?!

Well - you get the idea...

Yeah, you don't save much money energy-bill wise unless you look at over a year of running 24/7... Still, I don't know how much faith I would put in a coolermaster product running 100% for hrs on end powering a system with such nice components Razz

I am actually gonna be testing my psu with an overclocked i7 soon, so I'm a lil nervous Wink But I figure since there is someone with the same model powering a watercooled rig with about the same setup(extremely oc'd), I should be ok

Wrong mate, for an 4850 or higher in Crossfire, you need atleast 1000W. Was told this buy a senior ATI tech.

Rolling Eyes Laughing
and for a tripple sli gtx280 setup you need at least 2000W.

measured by me with a voltcraft energy monitor 3000:

QX9650 - 3,0 Ghz 1,1V
2x 9800GTX
780i SLI Chipset
2xhdd 7200 rpm
1x Raptor 10000 rpm

4 GB 1066Mhz Ram 2,0 V

Prime: 334 W
Full Load: 476 W (Prime+3dMark06)

The mentioned system should not need much more...

LMAO!

1000w PSU is waaaaay overkill. The 4870X2 runs great, with the rest of the system, on a 625W PSU.

1000w is "recommended" for 4xGPU scenarios (like a CrossFire'd 4870X2 or 4850X2) but most definitely NOT for standard dual-GPU situations.

I dunno man, thats what a tech guy told me. Fuck. I know shit about hardware

All I know is you need a min 650W PSU for a 4870x2 (check ati's site if you dont believe me)

I have 2 4850 in crossfire with a 850W PS and everything runs fine.

I have 4 1 TB harddrives as well. 850watt should be plenty.

Why would you need a Min 650W PSU for your 4870X2 but then say a 1000W is required for a set of 4850's?

Anyway for the 900th time, looking at peak ratings is worthless. Find a power supply with beefy 12V rails that's rated under load/efficiency. You can use a quality 650W PSU for a crossfire setup like that.

@Big

I have 4 (just bought 3 more) 1 TB External hd's and a 500gb internal as my main drive. Love having the space. Never going to buy an internal again. All I do is plug my externals into a USB slot (I have like fuckin 10+ on my comp) and plug the power cord into an outlet and thats it. No opening the case, fiddling with it, screwing it in place etc
My comp has room for 3 or 4 more internals. I don't have the hands to work on comps. Im a metal worker and used to working with big things ya know? Still, I just dont have the hands or patience to install anything in my comp cept a gpu and ram
lol
My buddy, who knows nothing bout comps has a 2 year old 400gb internal hd and tried to sell it to me for 400 bucks (he needed drug money Rolling Eyes ). Laughing. My 1 TB externals cost 179.99 each.

@Kamel

I dunno man. The guy at the store where i bought my psu said if you run 2 4870x2 in crossfire you need a 1000W.

Like I said tho, I dont know shit about hardware except the hardware I have. So you guys are prolly right, Im just relaying the info I was told. Like i said, he was prolly trying to make a sale or something. Cuz I went in to get a 650W PSU and he asked whats it for and I told him and he tried to sell me a 900W PSU lol
