Hi,
I am having troubles with this release. I didn't modify my GCF files in any way that I know of, and I tried to run the patch. I get this error:
This program cannot be update the installed version of Half-Life 2 and CS: Source Update 7 patch because of the following reason:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\VALVE\STEAM\STEAMAPPS\counter-strike source shared.gcf: unknown version.
Can anyone suggest anything? Anyone having the same problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

I get a different error. The patch runs ok, but then when I run the game (CS:S) I get a warning about an expired Steam ticket. I re-enter my Steam password and then hl2.exe crashes. Didn't crash before.

this release should be nuked anyways, since it breaks single player for Half-Life 2

Doesn't actually 'break' it, just makes saving crash to desktop. Hey could be fun to try and play SP thru without saving. Harhar f*cking har..

I have found the fix for the save error.
The error occurs with Vengeance Steam Emulator v2.0 for HL2.
Do NOT install Vengeance Steam Emulator v2.0 for HL2. (If you have already installed this, you must uninstall & reinstall Half-Life 2) (I also removed the registry entries just in case)
***THE ORDER IS IMPORTANT***
Install Half-Life 2
Install Vengeance Steam Emulator v1.10 for HL2 (from Half-Life 2 Valve *CD Version Upgrade* or the Vengeance DVD release)
Run patch.exe from Half-Life 2 & Counter-Strike Source Protocol v7 Update
Install Vengeance Steam Emulator v2.0 for CSS.
Install Half-Life 2 Deathmatch Addon
Run Steam Online.reg
Edit the steamemu.ini in Counter-Strike Source & Half-Life 2 Deathmatch folders

I have a question. Why would you need to switch to OFFLINE mode? HL2 Deathmatch, and CS Source are only playable online. What would happen if I tried to play HL2 single player while in ONLINE mode?

HL2 single player works while in ONLINE or OFFLINE mode, OFFLINE mode is for those without an internet connection or the paranoid

I also have this "save'n crash to desktop" bug, and I allready installed and uninstalled the game 3 times...
Are vengeance on the works for a fix??? or not?

vengeance update 3 has steam emulator 2.01 (fixed a little bug)
anyone tried it?

If you follow the steps in the nfo it works great. I guess most of the people who didn't get it to work didn't read the nfo!
EDIT: Or were you talking about update 3 generalnewbie?

same here:
cannot install
Half- Life_2_and_CS_Source_Protocol_v7_Update-VENGEANCE
always get error:
cannot update because .... .gcf unknown version
(i.e. half-life 2 content.gcf unknown version)
this is crazy:
i have a fresh formated hd.
i installed Half-Life_2_DVD_Retail-VENGEANCE fine. (and also finished game with zero error).
for some reason, this shitty installer checks my files and always says unknown gcf
i reinstalled hl2 now several times (yes i also did hl2install.exe and cssinstaller.exe , otherwise the protocol7 update wont install at all) !
always get this error!
anyone else had this error, or knows a solution?

I followed the steps and the patch was applied succesfuly but since then the game crashes when I want to save the game. It gives me this:
"Could not acquire necessary game files because the connection to Steam servers was lost."
I guess the only option is to reinstall the whole game...
