|
 |
Sup all?
got today club3d hd4850 overclock edition...
despite i have a pretty big bottleneck on my rig i noticed that in some games specially L4D
i have in some areas Artifacts...
the on idle is 38C and on biggest stress 70C...the funny part is that even if i underclock it to stock 4850 it still has wierd artifacts..i ran every possible gpu bench and never got artifacts...again only in some games like fallout3,farcry2,l4d and more....very wierd...
i ran google and found out that some ppl has the same problem with the same games!
so i guess its driver related?!?
my rig:
e6400 266@425 (3400mhz)
g.skill ddr2 2gb 800mhz
asus p5b deluxe (latest bios)
win xp sp3
club3d hd4850 oc edition (tried every cat drivers)
anyone know about this something?
P.S
take a look at this dudes pictures that the same thing what i have

Two things I immediately think of: PSU (low quality voltage to the 4850) and move the card to the other PCIe slot (if you have two). I have to say though, it looks like a RAM error.

It's impossible to say exactly which transistors on the 4850 are used by whatever test you're doing.
Suggestion: install plenty of games and test. Test Half Life 2 (source engine, same as L4D), Crysis etc. etc. etc. to see if you can find something similar in different games.

Run Furmark which basically cooks graphics cards. If you're getting artifacts there then RMA the card.

If your getting artifacts on this card that you didn't on the other then RMA the card regardless of when the artifacts appear.

Driver issue? Try a different set of drivers as the last resort.
The card should be going into 3D clocks during the furmark bench but are you doing it windowed or full screen? Maybe it's staying at 2D clocks hence no artifacts but when you launch a full screen game and it bumps up the core/memory speed you get them. The pictures look like memory artifacts to me, you can even try downclocking the memory.

I was actually going to advise unlocking it. Do you know what temps it ran at?

I have the exacct card m8 but mine is the his edition.
I got artifacts in arma the other day, seeing how the stock fan on these cards is shit, i undone it all and cleaned it out of all the clogged up dust now its like -30 cooler with the fan on 80% in ati control panel.
I'm going to buy a new fan for this as its crap.

The pre OC'd versions OC the memory way too high. Most artifacting is a result of memory. The majority of 4850 owners can't even hit 1100. If you don't want to deal with the RMA headache try flashing it to a standard or lower factory OC'd 4850 Bios and see the result.
Mine was at 850/1050 volt modded but even going 1075 on the memory got me similar artifacts.

Best advice i could give then is artefacts are normally caused by overheating, well in all the cases i've had of them.
What i normally do is just take the fan off and make sure you're clean all the dust from the card out, replace it and every time I've done that I've seen a decrease in temps of about 30c.
These cards need a better fan though so I'd recommend you buy a good 1 as the stock 1 they gave us as they do with most cards so we have to pay more money n replace them, are shit,.

Just posted this link over at the ATI forum
http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTU1MiwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==
Tutorial as on how to set up different "fan" profiles.
I run my 4870x2 at 38% in desktop, films and browsing etc.
Then I have a 60% profile for gaming. My card is idle using the 38% set up at around 46c or so, when gaming i would say max 65-68c.
Maybe try to set up a gaming profile using 55-65% fan speed and see what happens. At least worth a shot.
Also get Everest
www.lavalys.com
to check your temps.
EDIT:Reread your 1st post...seems that your temps are more or less ok...38c Idle, 70c stress. Not that bad actually.

Is this unique to 4850? I never had this on my 4870X2, which is leaps and bounds hotter than the 4850... Maybe just bad RAM modules on the card?

Same here, never ever had artifacts on my 4870x2. But then again I never really ran my card with stock fan speed. Well maybe once or twice when I got it, and before I found the fan profile trick.

Some news...
today i checked the card at my buddys comp...he had P35 dfi motherboard
well there are no "artifacts" at all on his rig...im pretty sure it's related to some kind of hardware issue more likely because my p5b deluxe has pcie 1.0 and his 1.1..
thats the only thing that is possible tomorrow gonna check the card last time on different asus p5b deluxe board...if the same result then im gonna sell it and take nvidia based card...
p.s
also did a little research last night i found 1 thing common with all other ppl who has similar effects...they all had asus, asrock, and some gigabyte boards...pretty wierd
