Just reinstalled XP for about the 7th time since it came out (not unusual). Anyways, this time it turned my drive into letter F. Used to be C. I have about 3 drives and several partitions.

I installed Norton Partition Magic to change it back to C. However, Norton warned me my OS might not boot up anymore.

Any suggestions on how to get it back to letter C without screwing up anything else?

As far as I remember Main os boot has to be C:/ so find that odd, the only other reason I can think of in this state of mind this time of year is that its installed a second OS as you have not pointed it to re-install on your previous location of OS.

I deleted old os partition first, did a quick format, then installed clean copy. Nothing else was on partition. This happened few years back as well so Im not suprised it happened again.

Actually, with 2000 and XP it was possible to have a system partition which is not labeled with C. With Vista, Microsoft labels the System partition always as C (for better compatibility with dumb programs which don't use environmental variables) and everything else is given labels later.

About changing the system partition's label after install, it is practically impossible. Just search through the registry for "F:\" to see how many things are now dependent on this label. You will either have to live with it (not a big deal), or reinstall windows on the active partition, which is usually chosen to be labeled as C. You can also set the current partition as active and reinstall in it again - it should be labeled properly as C. Smile

BTW, if you need some help setting a partition as active, just ask. Smile

It will all depends on where the registry is fucked up, use regedit to have a look, if the only thing mislabeled is within "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/system/MountedDevices/" then just rename "\DosDevices\F:" by e.g. "\DosDevices\C:" and reboot (I had this kind of crap once using acronis true image over a multiboot system...).

In all cases if you wanna play with the registry do a backup with ERUNT first.

I just reformated and re-installed windows. Same deal. OS was placed on F drive. I dont have anything else installed except for mobo drivers. Im just going to use partition magic now to change drive letter. Why when I boot from CD to install windows- it just wants to assign F for OS?

I have 3 internal drives (2 sata and 1 IDE). I disconnected the 2 drives that are not my boot os. Inserted XP CD - and ofcourse, windows stated my partition that is 300GB is my C drive. I wanted my 40GB partition to be C. So, I had no choice but to settle for drive D now as my OS.

I could not install XP on active partition as it was a 300GB+ HD full of stuff (could not format). I created a partition of 40GB just for the OS.

Oh well, will have to live it it then. Thanks for all your help.

Dude, you can set drives as well as partitions as active, meaning you can switch the active drive to the one you want to install XP, and in it, set the partition you want to install in as active.

My choices are R (repair), L (delete), C (create) in that setup. I would choose D to delete that partition then click enter to install windows on it. I did not see anywhere I can see drives or partitions to active.

Not in there. You need to be in the console in order to use the advanced tools.
