About the memory, I think you should go with 4GB, just because it is so cheap these days (you don't need ultra fast DDR2 for an HTPC). With 4GB of memory, Vista 32bit or 64bit will boot instantly, with the 64bit being a bit faster (at least it was for me with 6GB). The system will also feel much more responsive.
If you go with 4GB, and don't want a lot of it to go to waste, 64bit is the way to go.

The lack of support is a bit of a myth these days, almost everything runs fine on 64bit now.

lol, I already have the case, and psu... it was a package deal from some out of business place, at least they had the decency to get a pretty decent looking case I know there is lot's fancier, but the idea is that this won't cost that much more than a stand-alone BluRay player. Don't need to drop a couple hundred dollars on a case.
And I don't own, and won't ever even have the opportunity to own a HDDVD ... won't ever burn a DVD with this computer either. Really just looking for a dependable player ... I only but collectible type DVDs/BluRays, so that's why I want a real BluRay player instead of relying on just rips all the time.
also, about the 64 vs. 32, given possible future driver issues, is there really a reason for 64 bit given this computer will run nothing but MPC and firefox. I mean it, nothing else.

The main reason for your PC now to put 64bit is to use the entire 4GB and not 3.25GB. I think it's worth it.
There is also that hope that eventually developers will make codecs that make use of the 64bit platform to have better performance.

well for the price it's really not bad to have it support HD-DVD is all I meant.

HEar me out, it's only 10 dollars more, it's trivial but it's also won 2 awards for the top seller on newegg which says a lot since almost everyone in the states who's into PC's uses newegg/tigerdirect. But with it supporting HD-DVD, you'll have even more of a selection, there really isn't a whole lot of difference in quality at least from what I can see, so if you can find a HD-DVD of something cheaper than Blu-Ray by a good margin...why not?
Oh and also it's faster. 6x instead of 4x

The newegg one is the GGW-H20LK, which has the blu-ray burner in it too. The DC one is the GGC-H20L which is what I have, same thing as the newegg one but without the BD Burner.
Kinda lame, newegg doesn't have the H20L :\
If directcanada is a good source then by all means, jump on it

Your link to the manufacturer's specs does mention 667 and seeing that it's already running in the computer it is a given. Not so sure about whether it will run 800 because when it comes to hardware, sometimes things that are supposed to work with each other, don't. Not the other way round. So even though 800 mem might be cheaper you should go with what is already proven.

I can't! There's a lot of very nice vista skins with widgets and all for XP but we are beyond that now. As for whether you should buy 1 or 2 gigs you already answered your own question again. If everything is running smoothly then why bother with any gigs at all although that would be taking the 'less is moar' principle a bit too far.
I would run the sucker as is and I would only give it only one more gigabyte when it absolutely stutters and goes down its knees and begs for it. Why not 2 you ask? Well this is not a multi-task computer so if any single non-game application is stuttering with 2 gigs, a) it is a pos app and b) 3 gigs probably won't help it run any smoother either.

Make sure the receiver and your media player (the software) support Dolby Digital decoding and encoding (respectively), as that "5.1 over HDMI" is only for that, or else you'll have stereo only.

the card outputs 5.1 audio as LPCM, which doesn't leave very many choices for (cheap) receivers .. it either has to be compatible with new HD audio formats (=expensive), or Sony makes a budget line of AV receivers designed to be compatible with the LPCM BluRay output of the PS3 ...

that one was $75 cheaper a couple of weeks ago ... hopefully marked down again on boxing day.
