My buddy, who is an IT guy, tells me I have good chanes of this working with Vista.
Making a ghost image of my currrent hard drive. Getting my new computer assembled. Putting in new hard drive. Applying the image to the new drive. With new motherboard, CPU, memory. . . Vista will boot up and search for all my new stuff and install. Saving me from having to reinstall my OS from scracth and setting everything back up.
I know this used to be near impossible under XP. Any you guys tried this?
Guess I will find out by the weekend.

My guess...NO WAY!. If you have another Mobo and CPU doing this...NO WAY!. But the experiment intrigues me. If you still want to go a head, please post the result here .

WTF? This guy works in IT? And he did this to his own machine? Wow.
My guess is that EVEN IF it works, you will be faced with tons of errors, problems, ect.
I don't know if you knew about cleaning video card drivers before you install new ones over them? There is tons of gunk left over if the old ones are left in the OS. This is doubly so if they are for a different chip/brand.
This is like every single part of your motherboard-which needs software for nearly every piece of hardware to function properly. You will be left with a mess of device software that no longer points to working hardware. Some of this cannot be simply removed inside windows.
So yeah, I guess good luck on this.
Core i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz | 6GB OCZ DDR3 8-8-8-24 @ 1600mhz | eVga x58 Mobo | 2 x eVga GTX 460 SLI | Intel X25-M + 3x Seagate + WD Black = 2.75TB | X-Fi Titanium | PCP&C Silencer 750 | G15 KB | G5 Mouse | G35 Headset | Z-5500 Digital | Samsung T260HD

it will get fucked up
i'm doubtful it will even boot up
best case scenario; vista will boot up, but the hardware driver stack will be all messed up
you can try it, but you will probably loose performance and stability in the MAJOR reconfiguration
better to just do a proper reinstall

Well, he claims he didn't. I don't think he would lie to me. i have known him for over 20 years.
Of course, he proly at least went from 1 chipset of one mobo to another mobo but with same chip set... I need to ask him.
Yeah i know all about cleaning video drivers. i'm not a complete noob. Im not worried about the video drivers. I would just boot in safe mode and remove them with a cleaner.
It's the mobo drivers I am curious about.

Bah screw it. Whats the point? I am better off just doing an install. Something might raise its head later on. I mean... this is a totally new chip set I will be dealing with here. New technology with X58 AND i7 cpu.
I'm not going to waste time trying it.

Is it really that hard to just have all the drivers and programs stored on another HD or something? It's what I do, I have a seperate folder with all my needed drivers/programs backed up. Usually only takes abou 20-30 minutes to get them all up and running.

The only way i could see that maybe working would be if u did what he said and then booted into safemode and uninstalled all the drivers for all of your old hardware. I would still expect problems though.
Ryzen 5 5600, ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II, Corsair Vengeance RGB RT 32GB 3600MHz C16, MSI RTX 5070 Ti Ventus 3X OC , Corsair RMx Series RM750x. AOC AGON AG324UX - 4K 144Hz 1ms

Its not that simple with me. i have programs I use for work that are a pain in the ass to setup. 3 of which are proprietary to the companies I work with and don't work worth a shit to start with but I have to use them and its a pain in the ass setting them up. Drivers aren't my real issue.

From our chat session last night:
12/17/2008 9:46:30 PM From Him to ME: I did use an image I used the same hard drive but same deal
12/17/2008 9:46:38 PM From Him to ME: and it was a different chipset
12/17/2008 9:46:45 PM From him to ME: same processor though
12/17/2008 9:46:52 PM From ME to him: seems like that would leave some kind of motherboard drivers behind or .dll's that would screw with stuff.
12/17/2008 9:46:55 PM From Him to ME: nvidia 500 series to 600 series
12/17/2008 9:47:14 PM From Him to ME: I had to rebuild my raid
12/17/2008 9:47:38 PM From ME to him: hmm. Well, im leaning towards just doing a fresh install.
12/17/2008 9:48:03 PM From him to ME: I would try it first unless you are already having problems
12/17/2008 9:48:12 PM From him to ME: mine works great at the office
12/17/2008 9:48:12 PM From me to HIM: problems with..?
12/17/2008 9:48:16 PM From him to ME: the OS
12/17/2008 9:48:22 PM From him to ME: crashes etc
12/17/2008 9:49:00 PM From ME to him: everyone on Nforce is telling me they see no possible way of that working. lol.
12/17/2008 9:49:16 PM From him to ME: yeah well I didn't think it would either but it did
12/17/2008 9:49:23 PM From him to ME: actually was even beter than that
12/17/2008 9:49:33 PM From him to ME: I had bad memory that really screwed up my install
12/17/2008 9:49:44 PM From ME to him: from the old computer?
12/17/2008 9:50:19 PM From him to ME: I even used system restore to restore back to a date when the hard drive was in the old computer and it still reinstalled all the drivers and worked great
12/17/2008 9:50:34 PM From him to ME: yeah the memory went bad when it was transfered to the new motherboard
For what it's worth. If I decide not to do it, maybe someone else who has lots of time might try it. I still might try it myself. Just depends on how much time I think i will have.

It should work if you have the same ACPI driver and same brand of processor. If you currently have a modern multi core intel then it should work with any diskimaging software.
If you have hardware that is too different you could use software that allows restoring to dissimilar hardware, like Acronis TrueImage with the universal restore option. Some backup software also allows restoring to different hardware, for example backup exec, but I'm not sure if that'll work with non-server versions of windows.
You could also try putting your old harddisk in your new computer and see if it will boot and work properly. If it does then you can image to the new disk, otherwise reinstall.
