Aye, but only until the 14th of December, so if you want a legal copy of SC, SR2+Exp or even Galactic Civ 2 ... I'd do it now before the price goes back up. Wink

See my rant in the "Tweakguides Piracy" thread. Space Rangers 2 is WORTH buying! It was buggy as shit for over a year before patches fixed most of it .. but the game was/is great. I bought (with MONEY!!! ZOMG!!) the Reboot expansion a few months ago. Cost me $39. Did I care? Hell no. I even jumped through those ridiculous Impulse hoops in order to play it -- but I did - and I love the game!

Now it's even better! Jesus H, a 10x price cut!? For the FULL set!? That's ludicrously cheap and I'll bet it sells a shitload too!

Gamers, whether they're pirates or not, will buy games that are worth their money. What they won't do, is continually pay out $30-50 for a rehashed, badly ported, hack job of a game that is already a year old and STILL won't run on top spec computers.

What they won't settle for, is paying $30-50 for a fucking EXPANSION pack of items/misc that should have just been included in the goddamn original game (I'm glaring at YOU Maxis/EA)

Anyone have a problem with the videos not playing and the game crashing ? it's something to do with the xvidcore.dll that the game uses. Right now, I have to rename the file to skip the videos and get to the game :-/
I've tried some different versions of this dll, but same shit.

The videos are normal mpgs and play fine outside the game by the way, hehe.

Does it 100% support widescreen? Proper FoV, proper resolution, proper scaling etc.

Nah, sorry bud... 1024 and 800 only. There's a windowed mode option in Reboot, however, which should make it easier on the eye for Widescreen monitors.

You like this then, heh... Impulse isn't like Steam. You get a fully working download which is indistinguishable from retail. Once downloaded and installed, the game is fully playable as any normal game would be, without needing Impulse loaded. (ignore the protect.dll, that's from my original SR2 -- but the Reboot addon removes StarForce, so don't worry about it)

That's AFTER Impulse downloaded and installed the game. Works perfect without Impulse running, thankfully.

Impulse is both a distribution platform AND a games manager (you can even add your own installs to the games list)

Ok, the download was completed.. where the hell is it though? Can I backup wherever it dumped it at, so I can reinstall it in the future, if I change systems or such?

Can I also uninstall impulse after the download safely, or do I need to still keep it around for anything?

Impulse HAS an option for backing up your files for later install .. but when I first used it a few months ago, the restore option didn't work (beta issues) -- I'm not sure whether or not they fixed it yet. I don't even have Impulse installed anymore, let me redownload and see what happens.

Oh and yes, once the game is installed and running, you can uninstall Impulse. I *think* the downloaded file requires Impulse to install it though.

Thanks for the info.. lemme know when you figure out where it dumps the files at, and how I make a backup of the installer.

Here is the default for where it puts downloaded files;

C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Impulse\Temporary

(Vista)

Cool got it.. that looks like what you'd find on an install cd.

I'll back that up.. I don't want impulse filling up my c drive with a buncha crap.

Hmm.. I recall reading that you got space rangers 2 and the new reboot game as well, but damned if I see the original game anywhere.

I want to install it on the wife's systenm as well... odds are she'll like it since she was a big starcraft fan.

You can change the install path from the preferences dialogue inside Impulse, if the game installer doesn't have the option.

As for having SR2 as well, you do. It's all combined into one pack since you bought the "Complete" setup. Load the game. If the title screen shows titles for both Reboot and Rise of The Dominators, you have both Wink

The only downside to that Complete pack .. is you don't get the awesome "Space Ranger 1" with it Razz

Hmmm looks like there's no way to install it without using impulse. Least I didn;t see a setup listed anywhere.

The game title screen showed reboot and rise of the dominators in it, but I didn't see an option to pay one or the other title (unless they are just merged together.)

I'm going to try to copy the installed game folder elsewhere, and see if it plays from there.

Eh? If you got to the title screen.. then you must have installed it, so I'm not sure what you mean. In regards to the twin titles being on the screen; that's good! Just click Start Game and you're set, the expansion merges with the original.

However, that's all moot anyway.. as you've got the complete pack. Oh and you can move the folder from the default "C:\Program Files" -- AND if you go into Preferences, you can tick the "prompt for install directory" box Wink

=Update=

Aye, you need Impulse installed to INSTALL anything you download from there. It downloads as *.impulse file (here's my Reboot; Space Rangers 2 Reboot2.00.006_09.04.2008.impulse) which you can install by clicking the "ORB>Restore Archive" link.

Yep, you can copy the game folder elsewhere, uninstall it, and then just play it from a copy of the game folder Wink

Probably just easier to zip up the entire game folder, and archive that somewhere.

It will. SR2-R doesn't use registry entries nor any form of protection whatsoever .. and Impulse has no DRM in its installs OR downloads.

Very cool.. just ran it on the wife's system without issues.

I'll have to keep closer eye on stardock, since this looks to be a killer value!

Stardock have gained a wicked fanbase due to their excellent titles, no DRM, and great customer support -- and they're always having "weekend" deals like this, though I must admit I never thought I'd see SR2 and the Expansion (which is only 6 months old anyway) for $3.99 the pair!!

Awesome stuff.

Some more titles went on sale today. All the new ones appear to be from the developer Kalypso.

I wanted to buy it, but no resolution above 1024x768 in a 6 month old 3D game addon is unacceptable.

Actually bud.. the game is over 3 years old and it's 1024 or 800 in the 2D space sections... it's not a 3D game until you do planet battles (where it becomes an RTS) and you can have up to 1280x1024 (it could be even higher, but since the max res my monitor supports IS 1280, it could just be locked at that)

Smile

(the expansion got an English release around 6 months ago)
